Don't go in the Shed!

Guys, I know none of you are optics experts, but hey, you might be able to help me. Here's the thing. In my current art project, I want to use a prism to create the visible light spectrum and use that to light up the manip I'm going to make. I have the prism and I know the kind of conditions I need for it to happen properly (I'm making this inside a black box). The problem is... I need the light. It has to be white light, so regular flashlights don't work. My school has only one working slide projector (really good light), but it's in use (wow). I need a good source of white light... Any ideas? While I'm at it... could you guys send me some newspaper images and headlines and/or photojournalism showing things like Bush or other current leader, soldiers in Iraq, global warming stats...that kind of thing. Some protest pictures might be cool too. Please, if you're sending professional photojournalism (not from newspapers) make sure the owner lets me use it o_O You can just link me and I'll ask for permission, too. Thanks : D |

How about a fluorecent (sp?) light? You know, /not/ an incandecent light? Would that work? |

I'm not sure... Could check into that, but anyways I would need the source. I just need it to be actual white light, i.e., all the other colors together. |

Eh, it'd be too expensive... And in any case too large. The beam has to be thin; with an originally thinner beam (like in the flashlights I originally tried) it is much easier to get it to the optimum thickness, but I can't imagine that being easy with a stage light. @_@ |

Ah. Yeah, I see your point, stage lights are more for the big picture. Sowwy. |

as in not a hot light, right? Yeah, I'm pretty sure a fluorecent light would work. As long as you can project it to keep it from covering the spectrum. |

According to the Enclyclopedia of Laser Physics and Technology: "Spectra of fluorescent lamps or other gas discharge lamps (e.g. xenon lamps) can also look white but are much more structured." So I don't think it works. |

Maybe just use sunlight and a mirror to reflect it into the prism? |

In theory that would work perfectly (sunlight is white), but the work would become very dependent on wheather conditions and placement (indoors/outdoors). |

It's probly not the one liei--...oh...

i was gonna advise sunlight too, you ALMOST cannot find any more pure white light anywhere (TL lights are more greenish, while candles give off a small amount more red light, ect ect, not giving good light xept from sunlight) so basicly, you have to do it with weater or fluorecent light =/ |

My dad asked the physics teacher at his school. He suggested a slide projector (I couldn't find a working one) or an overhead projector (I believe will be really hard to include in the set-up), but said even a flashlight should work, however less powerfully. I'll try to find a stronger flashlight and keep searching for a slide projector. Thanks for the suggestions anyways, guys, I appreciate it =] My request for images seems to have been ignored, though... Can anyone help by looking for them on their free time? |
