Only after I paid the previous owner the $150 asking price.

Said it would not start last spring, took me less than 2 hours to fire it up.

Crankcase was over full, drained and filled to full mark. Gas tank had real bad gas, drained and filled with new gas, installed a good battery and it fired right up.

Err,
Being a noobie I have to ask the question "What's the Special mean?". Is there some non standard stuff on the tractor?

Or is that just a sticker that someone added?

I belive the only thing thak makes it a special is the fact that it has a 4 speed pearless tranny instead of the standard 3 speed tranny.

Willy:

There were two 582's. The 582 and the 582 Special (or 582S).

The difference is dramatic. The original IH 582 had a B & S motor with the traditional rear end. Then when CCC/MTD came into the picture, there was the aluminum rear end. The "special" had a Peerless "transaxle". So, the 582S had a B & S motor and a Peerless transaxle which was a big difference from the original design.

Scroll down about 3/4 of the way down and you'll see the funky belt drive rear that makes this 582 so "Special".

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
