I bought a used set off an Onan and cut down the pipe to fit and brazed back together, I also used the flanges off the old Kohler can and added them to the Onan pipe at the manifold end. Sounds REAL nice and it seemed to allow it to breath a bit better too.

Just stating that there are other options for can (exhaust) replacement.

Scott,

This looks good and is a nice clean installation. My only concern with your setup is heating up the PTO, especially when summer rolls around. But perhaps with the mufflers being in the path of the cylinder air flow (and your neat heat shielding), this isn't much of an issue? Have you run it for a while a WOT to see what the temp effect is on the PTO? I think one of those laser thermometers would be great for that.

I have been thinking about a different setup for my 1862 and have been exploring the idea of converting to a side mounted external muffler like on the supers. My kids think it looks cool -- like a machine gun. I just want to keep things as cool and quiet as I can. My Deere with a small Kawasaki has a huge muffler and is super quiet.

Mike,

This is the way that the 982 is set up with the Onan and I've not heard of any heat problems and also the cooling air pass by the cans and exits the grill anyway. Should be fine.

Sorry to raise a concern over the health of your PTO.

I am sure it will be fine as well.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
