The bead on both rear wheels of my Cub Cadet are rusted around the bead and need to be replaced. (It sat too long with flat tires and water collected on both sides) The wheels may be salvageable, but I think Im going to replace them since I need tires as well. Heres my question..I know that the wheels are 12inch with a 6-12 tire, 5X4 1/2 bolt pattern. Im wondering what wheels I could replace them with. Id like to stay with something that resembles the factory wheel if possible, but Im not against anything that would serve the same purpose..maybe even doing something with dual rear wheels. Any suggestions??? Oh, Im going to also replace the front wheels..I dont want to have new on the back and restored up front. Any recomendations on tires as well? If I decide to go with something other than factory, where would be a good place to find some Douglas Alum wheels? I checked out midwestsupercub, they seem to have some nice things but Ive never priced cub parts before. |

Hey Johnson_John1982!!! How's it going good buddy!!! Well to begin with, I not too sure if you can still find new 12 inch wheels that will fit the 6-12 tire. Hopefully someone will chime in about this and give you some more info on that. But in my honest opinion, you might have to find a good set of rear wheels and restore them. But since you're also looking for an alternative, and since you mentioned Douglas Aluminum Wheels. Which are excellent wheels by the way. You might also want to check with Real Racing Wheels. They make a 12x12 wheel especially for garden tractors with the correct bolt pattern. I believe you can purchase the wheels right from their site. I think the wheels cost $124.00 each not including the shipping cost. You might want to also check with Russ Nichols. He sells garden tractor pulling parts also along with rear aluminum wheels both Douglas and Real Racing Wheels. I'll give you that website address at the bottom of this post.As of matter of fact, I bought my 3.50x8 Tri Rib tires from him. And as for the front wheels, you can still find those brand new. I bought mine from CCSpecialties. Go to our Cub Cadet Parts Sources here on the forum and you'll find CCSpecailties listed there along with the link. And as for the front tires, pretty much everyone here (including myself) are all using Tri Rib tires. By the way, there are two styles of Tri Ribs. There are the classic narrow ones and the new wide Tri Rib tire. Both tires give you excellent steering capabilities. It almost gives you the feeling that you have power steering installed on your tractor. Well, I hope this helps??? If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. We'll be more than happy to answer your questions. Take care good buddy!!!! :thumbsup Here's the link to Russ Nichols: http://www.geocities.com/nicholsperformance2002/nichols2004.html Edited by cub61, Mar 10 2009, 07:34 AM.

John I can't remember but there was a craiglist ad that if IIRR was out of the Lexington area that the guy was giving away about 50 garden tractor wheels, He just wanted someone to haul them off. Scott |

Thanks Guy! :ButtRock I was thinking that by the time I figured in shipping, the amout of time it would take to blast, prime and paint some original front and back wheels, it may be more cost effective to go ahead and get some Douglas Wheels. Are there any particular size wheels and tires that you guys think would look good on an original? |

Hey John!!!! How's it going good buddy!!!! Well to begin with, it's really all based on preference. But in my honest opinion, you really can't go wrong with a nice set of ags on the rear and a set of Tri Ribs on the front. But remember to keep in mind this, if you plan on doing some plowing with a 10 inch Mold Board going with an extremely wide wheel would not be the best thing to do. I know that Douglas sells wheels starting from a 12 inch wide wheel down to the smaller widths. Try to keep the wheel width down to a minimum of 8.50 inches wide or maybe 10.50 inches wide at the most. Anything wider than that the tire will not settle in the furrow. But that's just if you plan to do some plowing with your Original. But if your not planning to do some Mold Board plowing with your Original, well you can use any wheel width and tire size on the rear that you may want. For example, I'm using a pair of Firestone 26x12x12 Flotation 23 G-1 4ply tires and are installed on 12x8.50 Cub Cadet Super Garden Tractor wheels that have the heavy offset.I can still plow with this tractor using this size of tire on the back since the 12x8.50 wheels don't allow the tires to fully stretch out to a full 12 inch wide tire. It's a fairly tight fit in the furrow but it works anyway. And as for the front, the wheels on the front are the classic narrow wheels that all the Originals came with and the tires are 3.50x8 GBC Tri Rib 4ply tires with tubes installed in them. This combination of tires seem to work very well for this tractor. It just something to think about. Well I hope this helps in some way??? If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask. We're all here to help. Take care good buddy!!!! :thumbsup Here some pics of my tires. Just to give you some ideas. Front Tires ![]() ![]() Here are the rears. ![]() ![]() |

Man that is one sweet Cub! :BigGrin I love the way that setup looks! I really dont have a practical use for my tractor. I live smack dab in the center of town, so if it actually gets used for anything, it may push some snow..one week out of the year. I really like the way that the 12wide tires swell up on the 8.5s. Ive been seriously considering the 23x10.5-12 Carlisle Super Lugs on a 12x10(or 8) wheel. I think itd look good with the added width and height. I am going to go, for sure, with the 3.5-8 tri ribs on the front..everyone that has them, loves them. Did you get those rear wheels new? The look to be in excellent shape. If I could find another set of those..I could keep my factory fronts and just buy the 3.5s. (That would save me about $110 because I wouldnt have to buy matching Douglas's) |

Good morning John!!!! How's it going good buddy!!!! First of all, thank you very much for the compliments. I really do appreciate it. Second, going with a 23x10.50x12 Carlisle Super Lug tire installed on a 12x10 or a 12x8 wheel will look awesome on a Original along with the 3.50x8 Tri Rib tires on the front. Just remember to purchase a pair 3.50x8 tubes for the front tires. Due to the fact that 3.50x8 tires are much narrower than the front wheel itself and the tire will not seal up. You can purchase those tubes at Miller Tire Co. or anywhere tubes are sold for lawn and garden tractor tires. And as for the rear wheels on the OL' Girl, yes I did buy them brand new. I bought these wheels brand new from CCSpecialties back in 2004. I believe I paid $194.00 for the pair. And the reason they still look new, is because I wax them. I bought this bottle of liquid wax. It's a spray on type of wax that you use for all types of paint jobs. I'll wax all 4 wheels down before I take the OL' Girl out to work and afterwards also. It seems to be protecting the powder coat paint very well. By the way, I even spray this on the hood as well, and it also works very well there too. But anyway John, I hope this helps in some way???? If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask. we'll be more than happy to help you out. Good Luck on your Original and keep us posted on your progress. By the way John, check with CCSpecialties and along with our other site sponsors to see if they have the rear wheels available. Make sure to ask for the wheels that were used on the Cub Cadet Super Garden Tractor and you will get exactly what I have. Take care good buddy!!!! :thumbsup Here's the wax that I use for the wheels and the hood: ![]()

I look forward to seeing this, as I have some wheels that I'll need to paint when I get some new rear tires for my 582 later this spring. |
