The plan is to rebuild the wifes 78 SB this winter. I have been doing some research and noticed that any of the aftermarket exhausts all stop at 1973 for fitment. What is different from the 73 models to the later models as far as the exhaust fitment. What options do I have? I would like to keep heater boxes on the car though.

Around that time frame the catalytic was made mandatory and the Beetle's exhaust became a single tailpipe. The rear valance was also reshaped to accommodate these changes. So by changing your rear valance to an earlier twin tailpipe piece you can use any aftermarket exhaust you like or use one that exits below the valance.

As far as I can tell I do not have a catalytic converter but it does have the single tail pipe. Just looking at pictures of the heater boxes it appears that the exhaust flanges are in different locations when compared to pre '73 models. I guess I will just need to put the heater boxes side by side to see if there are differences.

any aftermarket exhaust that is a header and does NOT use the stock 2 tip exits will fit your bug. the reason you see many stop for the later models is that most are FI and have different heaterboxes. SO if you want heat dont plan on using the FI heater boxes use 'normal' ones.
my 79 i have no heat but use a header for a -73 models.
