ok so can someone help me figure this one out... drove my truck all the way from ardmore to maysville then on to Clinton for the show... and when i was on old 66 there were some pretty steep hills and alot of wind and i was doing about 45 (following some dude hauling cows). when all of a sudden going up the hill the truck popped out of 4th gear. i have had it happen like once before with my super bug a long time ago but it never has happend again. and when i was coming back from Clinton going south there was a storm coming in and i was driving head on into some big wind and going up and down some hills and the fastest i could go was 50 and i was pushing it as hard as it would go, yet the tack was only showing 3.5k so i really wasnt pushing the motor that hard but every time i went up a hill it would want to pop out untill after the storm passed and then when i went up a hill it was fine... i was told a long time ago by someone that its the linkage between the tranny and the shifter rod that is going bad and that the shifting is not fully engaged... still not convinced that is what it might be... any help?

It's possible that it may be "tranny time". I always associated the popping out of gear thing as meaning it may be time to rebuild your transaxle. It is possible that your shift couplings are wearing out or your shift plate needs adjustment. |

I had a 70 Bug that would pop out of 1st and I heard the same thing about the shift couplings. So I changed them and no change. I think mine was the sincros. If that is the case IT IS tranny time.
Sandstation gave me a great deal on my rebuild! Jeff |

if it pops out under load and only 4th, id say tranny, or just hold it in until you cant anymore, THEN its tranny time

Mine does it sometimes when downshifting into 2nd. I can live with it until ... well ... I can't. |

i guess it would give new meaning to the term "drag race" havent been able to get the truck out because of all the damn rain we have been getting... but i will check and see what it looks like soon... i do remember that after my drive back from Clinton and letting the truck set overnight that when i started to drive it the gears seemed a bit sticky when shifting from one to the next and there wasnt as much play as normal... but then when it got warmed up it seemed to work a bit better... hummmm thanks mike :ph43r: |

Sounds like the transaxle to me too..... What year is your S/C? If it is a early 3 Rib style, I'd try to find a 091 6 rib. Those all came w/ 4.56 R&P's, which will help you go faster w/ less RPM's (better gas mileage) plus they're way stronger........ *if my memory serves me correctly* '68>'74 (3 rib) had the low 5.37 R&P's '75 (5 rib) one year only 4.86 R&P '76>'79 (091 6 rib) had the 4.56 R&P |
