I'm gathering up the remainer of the parts for my motor and I have a Question. What is the advantage of straight cut cam gears? I heard that they whine. I still need both gears (crank-cam) . Any ideas? <_<

So are they worth the extra money? I mainly want a good strong motor that will last. A daily driver. <_<

Straight cut cam gears are not needed until you get into high horsepower, high PRM range of 175 HP or more. They are one of the biggest pimped parts in VW engines. They might free up 1/4 of 1 horsepower. As far as the noise, that depends on the relationship of the center line of the crankshaft and the center line of the cam within the case you use. It is the case that makes them noisy, not the gear itself.

NOT TOTALLY TRUE... if it was just the case then it would make noise even with the stock gears...

Wow! I'm impressed. Well now I know. I think that I will stick with stock and use the extra 20 bucks for more parts. :)

I hear if you pack the inside of the case with sound deadener it helps too... But when it gets wet with oil it can make the engine heavy.... ;)
