Since I got home from the DFW area a couple of weeks ago I've had a problem with my engine: 1776 Counterweighted crank mild hydraulic cam hydraulic lifters CB 044 heads Stock rockers 1 1/2 inch merged header w/redneck bolted up QP muffler Dual 36 IDF Webers 009 Dist. Runs rough, like it's missing and pops out of the carbs and backfires out of the muffler. I think I got some bad gas in DFW and/or I need to re-sync the carbs. I've replaced the dist. cap, rotor, coil, and blew the jets out with carb cleaner. No change. It runs better when it's warmed up but still pops when it is at part throttle and also when starting off from idle. Since it's "Tis the Season" time and I work in retail, any thoughts as to what it could be will be greatly appreciated seeing as how I will only get one day off a week, maybe, to fix this thing. Thanks, Brett |

blow out the main jets and reinstall. if you hav en't yet also take the aircleaners off and make sure the emulsifiers are not wiggled loose. check for intake leaks. check manifold bolts are tight. do all this way before trying to sinc carbs. |

Didn't think about vaccum leaks, thanks! I'm off (mostly) Saturday so hopefully I can get it checked. If my hands don't freeze to my tools. |

carbs just don't go "OUT OF SINC" unless A: your mechanic is a dumbass or B: you have crappy linkage. I would never take Dual carbs to someone to mess with unless they have a set on one of they're own cars that sound good. except me
none of my cars run but....

As far as the linkage goes, yes, you could probably class mine as "crappy". It's an old one, round tube with a bend to go over the alternator and into swivels mounted to the choke block-off plates, and most of the pivot nuts have been replaced, none are the same size. The linkage came with the carbs when I got them off Ebay years ago. I've run it for years with no problems, I've got two rebuild kits so I might as well rebuild them. And check for loose intake manifold nuts too. I've always had good luck adjusting and synking with the instructions from the aircooled.net site. Just wish I had a heated garage! |

Looks like Bam hit it on the head, main jets on 1 & 2 were clogged and the crappy linkage came dis-combobulated, I definately need to see about getting a better one. Maybe if I go see Santa tomorrow and tell him to forget the giant LCD TV and substitute a hex bar linkage instead? As for my mechanic being a dumb ass, well, it's me so... maybe so... Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it, Brett |

I ran dual 44 webers on my 63 RHD vert for a LONG time with no air cleaners and I was also lazy about changing fuel filters. blowing out jets was a constant chore.. oh and I wasn't calling YOU a dumbass. I just hate it when people tell people they're carbs need to be synchronized when USUALLY its not the case. glad you got it figured out. |
