My 63 gets ornery when the engine is hot, too. I do like mentioned above and hold the gas pedal to the floor while cranking. Small airplane engines are like this too. |

heat is a big problem with my 69 pickup. the trucks didnt get good ventilation and in the heat i always have to hold the gas down and have the motor turn over several times untill it finaly starts... the oil temp can be 180 all the way up to 220... i was told that the carb gets to hot and boils out the gas and your basicaly pushing the gas back into the carb untill its full again... its a pain in the butt to have to do this all the time and i have to rev the motor several times to get it to run evenly... and yes its timed and valves are set... so enjoy the heat its part of having a VW.. mike |

i think something is wrong with ALL your motors honestly. Compression low, timing, valves etc.. I mean if it starts and runs cool, leave it be, but do you think VW could sell cars if they did that factory? i think not. |

Jim you're incorrect! Everyone knows that do to Earth's declining condition i.e....Depletion of O-zone, global warming, etc.... Everyone's Air-Cooled VW will never run as good as they once did in the 60's & 70's! However if everyone would hug more trees, we could just maybe get our VW's to run cooler & better! |

Thanx everyone. That gives me a starting point. I have no manuals so far I've ordered online (still waiting for them to arrive) a Chiltons and Idiots guide so I will start with my valves and go from there. Where is Kerr's. I haven't heard of it before, I usually freq. Bethany Imports and online parts. |
