Laurel listened intently to Nathan's response. Her green eyes widended slightly as she watched Nathan's uncle transform the chair.

"Wow.." Laurel said softly tucking her chestnut/red hair behind her ears.

"Alright my next question is worth another 5 points and the answer was already said. What do you think the words equivalent exchange means? Again the answer was already said. Think hard." Brandon turned to Nathan. "Let someone else try this one. I know you know it."

Laurel's forehead wrinkled in concentration at the Professor's next question. Equivalent exchange? Why - wasn't that what Nathan had told her on the train and just now?

Laurel raised her hand, "Er, the thing that Nathan said about changing one thing into another of equal or lesser value?" She guessed, hoping it wasn't completley absurd.

"5 points to Hufflepuff. That's right. The exact meaning is: In order to take you must give something of equal or greater value. That is the law of equivalent exchange. It is one of the most important rules of alchemy. And each of you will do well to remember. Not following this rule can very well kill you. If you attempt to use alchemy and take more then what you can give, the alchemy will begin to take from your body to make up for what isn't there. That's why human alchemy is forbidden. You can recreate a body, but not a soul."

Laurel smiled; pleased with herself for having remembered the answer and earning points for her house. Her green eyes did widen slightly when he mentioned how alchemy could kill you. Laurel hurridley took out a piece of parchment and doodled a few notes down.

"Now then," he turned and quickly began making shapes and symbols on the board.

Then he moved to a side board and drew more.

"These symbols are very important to alchemy. I don't expect you to memorize the symbols on the larger board. Those are more advanced and specific. The symbols on the side board however are more simplified. Those I will expect you to learn throughout your studies."

Laurel watched the Professor draw symbols on the board. Of course she hadn't a clue how to use them or what they were for but Laurel copied down the smaller board's symbols anyways for her notes. After all he'd just said they would be important.

"Now of course each of these symbols have specific meanings and have a great deal to do with what I will teach next. But first you need a knowledge of them. This for example," he said, pointing to the first symbol with gold under it, "is the symbol sol, or sun. It stands for light, and life. This next symbol," he said, pointing to the symbol with silver under it, "is luna, or moon. Anyone care to guess what it represents?"

Layla quietly walked into the Alchemy classroom. She couldn't believe she was late on her first day. She loved Alchemy. As Layla was walking in she heard the Professor's last question. She quickly sat down in a seat and raised her hand. ' The symbol mean darkness or dead Professor "

"Very good. For such a good answer I won't deduct points for you being late to my class. But I won't tolerate tardiness again." He turned back to the board. "The next one is lead, or Saturn. This symbol is for the body, used for healing minor cuts and bruises. Sometimes even broken bones. Then there is tin, or Jupiter. This symbol is for wind. Then iron, or Mars, which is the symbol for fire. Copper, or Venus, is earth. And then Mercury, also known as quicksilver, which is water. Now," he flicked his wand, causing books to jump to each desk and open to a page with a circle drawn onto it.

"This is a transmutation circle. This one, like the symbols on the larger board, is a more complex one." He drew a circle on the board then drew an upside triangle inside of it, then a right side up triangle, intersecting the first. Then he drew the symbol iron, or mars exactly in the center. "This is a much simpler circle. These circles help you focus alchemy into the object you're working with, sort of like a focusing point. The symbols focus it more by latching onto the exact element you'd like to use. Now use your imagination. What do you think you could do using this circle with the iron, or mars symbol?"

Layla sat there and thought for awhile finally she closed her eyes and used he imagination. She imagined carving the symbol into a candle then lighting it. She opened her eyes then raised her hand. " You could carve the symbol into a candle or a log & then start the flame or fire."

"5 points to Gryffindor. Excellent answer. You must have studied alchemy before. Yes. With a simple transmutation circle such as the one I drew, I can do this." He walked over to the fireplace next to him and carved the same circle into the log with a small knife. Then he pressed his finger to it and a spark jumped from the circle to the center of the logs, igniting a flame. "Great for when you're in trouble and need a fire going. And now since it's already warm enough." He pulled out his wand and pointed it at the fire. "Aguamenti." A small stream of water came from the tip of his wand, extinguishing the fire. "Now that I'm thinking of water, replace the mars symbol with the mercury symbol, or the symbol of water. What could you do with that? And think good and hard. Fire you can manage the smallest of sparks just using a few elements around you. In theory you can do that with water but it always helps to have the element already around."

Brandon looked at his watch then looked back up to them. "On second thought hold your answers to that. Class is over for today. Now for homework." He pointed to the symbols on the sideboard again.

"I'd like you to give me an example of alchemy for each symbol except for iron, or fire since we already gave an example. This homework is worth 25 points and if you want an extra 10 points give another example of fire if you want to. But it has to be a good one and not a candle or lighting a fireplace since they were said. You can use this to help you understand the symbols better." He drew more onto the sideboard.

Silver

"And remember no answer is wrong. You'll get the 25 points just for attempting it but I need at least one answer for every symbol except fire. This homework will be due by Thursday, August 2nd at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Now then everyone off you go. I'll see you at the next lesson."
