I normally prefer Dell... but for laptops, HP has the best reputation and I've been satisfied with the ones I've picked out for family members.

You could go with a brand like Acer or Asus, but I honestly don't know much about them. I've only recent been researching them as I purchased a netbook.

Check out: http://www.dell.com/outlet

It's where dell sells their refurbished/returned PCs. Same warranty as a new PC. Good track record. I buy from there as if it were new and get great deals for it. That's the only place I buy desktops from, at least.

I'm in the market for a laptop as a gift. It's harder to think of what specs to get when you won't be using it regularly. It seems like battery life averages out around 4 hours.

Are there any advantages to buying directly from the manufacturer? Also, when you buy from a retail, is there any way to customize your order, such as not preloading the computer with bullshit like Napster?

I think with Dell they let you build your own. I'm not sure, usually I buy stuff from newegg or tiger direct, as opposed to the manufacturer.

The batteries on laptops are like the batteries in a cell phone or any other electronic device... they just wear out over time. I've had this here dell for 4+ years now and gone through 2 batteries and replaced my motherboard because the power connector was loose (the mobo was under warranty, but warranties don't cover batteries).

All in all, the Dell was worth it for the mileage I've gotten out of it. The warranty plan was what I liked since I just replace my own parts.

For the price, I say Toshiba gives you the most bang for your buck. They are on the low end of price (I've seen new in stores for $450 so I'm sure there's deals available on the web) and they really are a decent computer.
