I had the opportunity to borrow my friend's PS3 this past weekend, and then borrow another friend's copy of Uncharted 2. I played through the 10 hour single player campaign just yesterday.

I know there aren't a lot of PS3 owners in No Mercy, and it is a shame that anyone misses this game. I would never say that one game makes a console a MUST-OWN. I didn't think that of Metal Gear Solid 4 or Final Fantasy XIII (when it was an exclusive, it is now coming to the 360), but if any game gets close, it is Uncharted 2.

I started to write a longish review, but it became too difficult. There is just so much that works in this game, and it tires me out just to think about what I would want to write about. So instead I'll use this thread to post some other notable reviews/criticisms that have resonated with me.

For me, this game exceeded the hype. I hope that most gamers will get to play this now, rather than later. Because Uncharted 2 makes giant leaps forward in game design that (hopefully) will be emulated and become conventional in the years to come. But right now, it is an entirely new experience. An epic game where pacing, writing, chemistry between characters, the most amazing graphics you will ever see in a video game to date (unless you played Crysis on a god-like computer), sweeping score, and intense 3rd person gun-action, stealth, and platforming. It really is remarkable. I've never paused a game before to reflect on what was happening. And I did that more than a handful of times while playing through Uncharted 2. Just to take a moment and wrap my head around what I was doing and wondering why other games haven't done this before.

It isn't flawless, though. It is an extremely linear game. No choice given to the player beyond whether you want to use stealth or go in guns-a-blazin. The story might feel too familiar when compared to movies like The Mummy/National Treasure/Indiana Jones. The level design isn't always conducive to allowing reliance on the stealth elements.

"A+"

Supplanted Arkham Asylum as the best game I've played this year. And I feel confident saying it is one of the best games I've ever played. It's hard to rank games considering how much they've changed over the years. Nostalgia, graphics, etc. all come in and complicate straight up ranking (just like how its hard to rank athletes from different eras). But there are some games that stick with you because of how they elevate themselves above their contemporaneous peers; ie: Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Morrowind (I think this set the bar for what an open-world game had to be)... Uncharted 2 belongs in that category.

A few, on the short side, reviews that drive home most of the points I agree with.
