Basically it was like rapidshare, filestube, etc. Along with it was megavideo, which basically had every TV show uploaded so whenever you missed an episode or wanted to catch up on old shows, this was the site the files were hosted on.

I hope these guys get off on the copyright charges, otherwise it sets a dangerous precedence. It sounds like they got the right lawyer so hopefully they will. Unfortunately for Kim Dotcom, I think he's got a target on his back so even if he gets off on the copyright charges, they're gunna bang him on something like tax evasion so he has to do time.

Some people (including myself!) were using the service to LEGALLY transfer files from PC to PC. More stories came out that some companies used the service to store legal documents, and some musicians were using it to upload demos to other bandmates to create albums, so they all didn't have to be in the same studio at the same time. Megavideo also had a report tool (like youtube) and were very on-the-fuckin-ball about getting copyrighted files taken down.

But, truth be told, some of these guys were living in mansions with multi-car garages, so I'm sure they were aware that the net could be cast upon them at any given time.

As for alternatives, there have been a few, but none of them with the scope or speed of Megaupload.

The only good thing about this is now when I want to watch a movie, I won't have to worry about megavideo links giving me the ol' 72 minute limit.
