I wanted to pick up the topic of cyberbullying that was discussed in the chat earlier today. I think it's an interesting topic that I'd like to explore, because of my strong-held belief that if left unchecked, this will end up destroying our youth. Trolling. Flame wars. Whatever you call it, they're sending more and more kids spinning into a vortex of hate that usually results in hospitalization or death for one or more parties. I'm not a victim or a perp in this case, just a concerned outside party that can very clearly see the end result if our current course remains unaltered. I didn't think this social phenomenon was really relevant in our case, but I'm remorseful in finding that it is. Dave and Buff are the two best examples that come to mind. Dave will be back full-time eventually at some point (he still has access codez to the Co-op gun vault after all). But both guys were run-off due to incessant and rampant personal attacks. Sure, one could play the "if you can't take the heat...." card, but why even give them heat in the first place while full well knowing how it will turn out? I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have them here as regulars. That's just our own little local example. The real problem is farther reaching and has a greater grasp on modern youth society. I think behavioral techniques employed at early ages would be a relatively easy way to combat this trend, by correcting the problem before it reaches the destructive stages. I hope school communities are aware of this and are willing to employ some positive-minded tactics before shit gets surrrrious. |

I think for the most part, once you hit a certain age / maturity level, cyber bullying has less and less of an impact. I missed what actually caused Dave to peace out, but I can't imagine it was all of us on him about his weight, or his looks, or us holding dick pics we found pf him over his head and berating him as a whore. It was probably something along the lines of Champ calling him an idiot for his stance on 9/11. If it wasn't then I'm an ignorant butt and will most definitely be cyber bullied while that point is hammered into my dumb whore head, but I think there is a definite line drawn between Cyber Bullying, and Cyber Arguing gone spast the "gentlemans" stage of said argument. One thing I love about No Mercy is that we've been such a tight nit group with each other for years and years, hell we're pretty much growing up together, for better or worse I guess if there's someone here you don't necessarily get along with. There's a ton of smart guys who post here, but there's just as much of a chance you'll see me start a wrestling finisher thread, post a music video glorifying an attempted rape, or post some 9/11 jokes as you'll see me reply in threads like this with my honest, serious opinion on a situation. To make this story a little shorter, we're like a fratenity of sorts. We're going to bust each others balls, sometimes really over the top, but we're all just pals goofing off in the long run. I don't think there's anyone here who would do anyone downright malicious to one of us given the opportunity, excluding Tymer probably. Real life cyber bullying? A bad, sad, unnecessary situation. No Mercy cyber bullying? Par for the course you small dicked faggot. |

I didn't mean to get too far off the topic at hand with the tangent about its place in No Mercy, but as for cyber bullying in school age children/young adults, it's absolutely an unfortunate problem that I don't see having any end. |

I'm not 'for' cyber bullying, and like I said last night, if a kid is being outright hounded by someone, they should have some means of recourse. If they can't block someone cause they keep making new names or something like that, the bully is going a little far and nobody should have to be harassed. But if it's just insulting the kid or making jokes about someone every so often, I really don't care and think the kid needs to toughen up. Eventually every kid is going to find out he's not the most loved thing in the world and that people can be mean. It's a shitty part of life for every kid, but whether you get bullied in person, or you get bullied online, it's going to happen. I mean they're not even keeping score in a lot of kids' sports leagues just so kids don't have to feel like losers. You can't pamper a kid forever, and I think online is actually a fairly safe environment for bullying. You're not gonna get hit, you're not gonna get outnumbered, you CAN fight back if you have the balls, and if you're worried about it being your kid, you can sit right next to him as he's being bullied rather than have him face it alone at school. MY fear for the future is a generation so self-centered and pampered that they're not able to face real life. I mean is that what we want, a bunch of 18 year olds thinking they can do no wrong, that nobody will ever yell at them for being stupid? Sounds like a good formula for texting and driving to me. And with Buff and Dave, they ran themselves out. Sure we made jokes about being fat/crazy, but that's only because the MAIN thing they're communicating to us is how much power over them we have with those words (whether they think they're communicating this or not). I used to call Jawa fat and did he run off? No, he just made an even better joke about him being fat and I was out of material. Buff's not even fat anymore, but it's his reaction that makes me still want to call him Tubbs8125. That's why I don't mind cyber bullying; there's a fairly easy solution. I mean, I'm in a stable dedicated to gayosexuality and dicksucking; you think you're going to insult me by calling me gay? Bring it on! As far as Buff and Dave being innocent, I've also got to disagree. It's not as if they showed up, said Hi, and we all jumped on them. Remember the phrase "Well I'd rather be fat than black". Remember when I made a 9/11 joke and Dave jumped down my throat bringing up personal shit when I hadn't said anything about him? Cyber-bullying isn't the problem, it's the SOLUTION to the problem of unchecked rambles and opinions. I WANT people to know that not every thought they have is intelligent. I WANT them to REALLY consider how they phrase things, what kind of evidence they use in arguments, and that there are people out there who will disagree. I WANT people to be ready for criticism, so that they can do things better in the future, not worse. Yes, some kids just can't take it and commit suicide. But I can't imagine that's due solely to just the cyber-bullying. I think it has to do with A. Pre-existing problems like an abusive parent, or B. An ego that got way too big and finally popped. So I agree there needs to be preparation for the internet. The same way you shouldn't let a toddler crawl on the highway, you don't let a sensitive kid on the internet. But the problem isn't the driving or the bullying, it's the person jumping in the deep end before they belong there. Now I don't condone bullying; I'd stop my kid if I found he was harassing someone, and I regret some of the things I've done in the past. I'm just saying, if adults can prepare kids for the internet, I think the worst problems can be avoided without expecting people to change (which banning bullying asks of people). I don't want the internet to go all TV-PG on us too, I like the Attitude era! And like Jawa hinted at, No Mercy itself started as a pure flame war and at one point I've probably been on the other side of all of you. But that wasn't the basis for our suicides or animosity, it was the basis for our friendship. We just weeded out the f@gs. |

I will add however that I'm a little ignorant of the full definition of cyberbullying. So if bullying requires persistent hounding as I mentioned in my first paragraph, I don't like it, cause I think you should be able to escape the bully. I was more responding to flame wars like we used to do. Frankly, if I could change one thing about this situation, it would be to train better trolls. A lot of the trolling I see nowadays is just so amateurish. I get that they're kids, but you can also tell they're copycats. I felt like NM had so many unique posters who were doing what they do for the love of it, not just for temporary amusement. By that same logic, I always enjoyed making fun of someone's typing, argument, or actions online than trying to delve into their personal life. I think there's something to be said for putting up that boundary, as it creates that fun competitive environment for flame wars without getting into cheap shots, emphasis on the cheap. So yeah, if the trolls/bullies aren't as good as us, they need to get trolled a little into shape. |

Exactly, No Mercy was pretty much built on finding new, improved, creative ways at calling each other fat, stupid, or black. Not to mention dick-size accusations (I couldn't participate due to the enormous fat rolls covering my genitals) Everyone who's "retired" or whatever needs to lighten up and go back to the fun ol' days |

I'm gunna break up this FWO love fest and represent the Co-Op (Holler A1 and Dave) I think that when it comes to cyber bullying in the youths (or "utes" as Joe Pesci would say in "My Cousin Vinny," but I digress) it comes down to parenting. One way or another, whether it be online or in school, you're going to get bullied. Teachers can't protect you every second of the school day, nor can the cops on the streets. My theory is that it comes down to your parents (or whoever is raising you) to teach you how to deal with this at an early age. Now only how to deflect it, but how to handle the emotions that come with it. Bullying is one thing you will never eradicate, its almost a primal thing where a bigger or stronger person is trying to show they are the alpha male in a situation, it's been going on for years and years. What you can do is teach children how to deal with it. As far as NM goes, maybe these guys weren't "chased" away by our fellow brothers. I know buff is a very busy guy, last I heard not only was he teaching but he was trying to get a masters and has a chick. I haven't talked to Dave in a while but I'm sure he's got good stuff going on as well. Heck, I haven't been able to chat much either with all the hours I've been putting in, but it didn't have anything to do with NM peepz doing anything wrong. I would hope that if there are issues, we can address them like men, whether it be in chat or in private in IM or something. Eye and I have definitely talked out some fantasy sports issues in the background in private and I think it helped a lot. Also, Bro-in-Law and I had some shouting matches via email (thanks Scott Rolen) but things between us are cool now since we put aside our disagreement to see why the other person thought the way they did. |
