I'm looking at downloading AVG or Avast. I'm not sticking with these preset trial version antiviruses that came on this computer. I think Norton causes more problems than it fixes. So, would I be alright in going with a free antivirus such as AVG or Avast? Here's the list I'm reading for reference -- http://freebies.about.com/od/computerfreebies/tp/best-free-antivirus.htm |

Avast found a virus on my dad's computer that not AVG or even an expired version of Trend Micro could find. That said, you can only download it as a trial, it isn't 100% free like AVG. Still, I'm a believer in "you get what you pay for" and I give Trend Micro my full endorsement. |

I used to use Avast on all my computers, but I've since switched to Microsoft Security Essentials because it manages to have even a smaller footprint on my CPU. http://lifehacker.com/5559102/microsoft-security-essentials-finds-unknown-malware-but-avoids-false-positives Honestly, antivirus programs aren't even necessary if you are web savvy. Windows comes with its built in Windows Defender and that plus the security provided by web browsers like Chrome & FireFox make 3rd party software obsolete. But it still is sensible to use, I suppose. |

It's not like I like to use these programs, in fact I've never used one before. I know that they aren't necessary but thought I would ask anyway. |
