Is America a Christian Nation?

Some people directly say America is a Christian nation, while others say so less directly (crediting the faith of the founders, presidents, etc.), and others disagree. So, I ask you the following questions;

Is America a Christian Nation? (I won't define the question any further, I want the definition to be up to you)

if so, What does that mean for the government?

I think it used to be, but no longer is. How many true Christians have you met in your life? By true Christian I mean no swearing, no drugs, no pre-marital sex, etc. There really aren't many out there.

I think it is a nation built on Christian virtues. By that I mean for the most part the people of this country do the right thing more often than not and as far as western civilizations go we are fairly tame as a whole.

Other western civilizations are, or were, Christian though. So do you see America as more or less Christian than Europe? And is this what makes us different from Euros?

Our nation was founded on Christian principles by our forefathers 200+ years ago. Are we a Christian nation? I would say yes based on the facts that all of our laws, codes, and values have a direct lineage to Christian beliefs of those guys so many years ago.

Alexander the Great founded Alexandria, but today it's full of mosques. The laws of today are different than those of the founding; slavery is the easy example. And is it fair to say that our forefathers had 'Christian' principles? The colonies were set up specifically because of all the religious differences, whereas the Constitution had to unite all the protestants, Catholics, and Quakers; as such I see the Constitution as a break from religion based on political secular compromise.

What is a Christian principle? Tons of Christians disagree on shit, hence all the sects. And freedom from the pope may have united Protestants, but it's also just as much a principle of atheists. When I hear America being called a Christian nation, I always feel offended that all the good values are trying to be monopolized by one single group at the expense of others.

It really all depends on what your definition of a Christian Nation is. I think we are a christian nation based on how we were founded, where our laws come from, how we think about what our laws should be.

Rather than ramble on, I'll just sum up what I think in one line:

We are a secular nation that was formed on Christian values.

You're talking about semantics, I am talking about laws and governance.

Sure, Christians are stupid and irrational and make words bend whichever way they want, but the way this country was founded was what a bunch of Christian white guys thought was appropriate. I mean, we still don't let gay people get hitched....why not?

James Madison himself had some quote about how the forefathers were staking the institution of our government and policy on the Ten Commandments. This from the guy who wrote the Constitution, which is still binding.

However, no, the United States is not a Theocracy, and we are not ruled by a singular divine god. We have just been historically heavily influenced by that god.
