Racism @ Tea Parties?

Racism, or a lack of race representation?

Word is that these tea parties are attended by a mostly backwoods-type crowd, who shun and frown on folks from other races. I never read into the connection until an article mentioned it, but it does seem like a connection is there.

So that begs the question, is the basis of tea parties to express discontent with the current political atmosphere, or are they just "lolmad" that a black guy is running the show?

That isn't to say that criticisms towards the administration are without merit, because they are certainly valid. It just seems that this particular slice of the opposition are just firing their guns into the air just for the sake of it.

The basis is discontent with the government but I don't think it's so much that Obama's black as that he's Obama. He's smug and always playing it cool, and people don't wanna see that. Like if you watch the state of the union or some speech by him and you're already mad at him, if he comes out and starts smiling and waving and shit like everything's wavy gravy, how could it not piss you off? I think there are a few racists there but more by coincidence than anything.

I will say I think they're anti-liberal though and probably because they've kept themselves isolated. The things they say and the way they claim America as their own makes me think they have no idea that there are a lot of actual liberals out here who want some of the things Obama's doing. There are conservatives who know liberals and disagree with them, but they don't act like the Tea Party members and call people unamerican and shit. Considering there are blue dog democrats whose whole distinction is their aversion to high taxes/deficits, the Tea Party's not playing the political game correctly which makes me think they're just a fringe. Republicans with a chance don't act like such dicks, same as liberals; the crazy ones aren't the ones who win.

That being said, I'd like to ask these people how influential they think the government was in helping given them the lives they had. They seem to be totally anti-government with no appreciation for any government services or institutions that have protected or served them in the past, and I'd like to see if that's the case.

Aaron, to address your points:
-I don't see the Tea Party as hating blacks or any sort of race. It's more a rebellion against what is going on in Washington, particularly with the proposed tax hikes as Eye said. I will say that you won't see too many blacks at Tea Party events, and here is my theory as to why. You can call me racist, but I feel that many blacks do and will continue to support O'Bama just because he is black. Even if they don't agree with his philosophies, they will support him just because they are proud that he has reached the pinnacle in representing their race. My comparison would be if a player from your hometown team was caught up in some shit like Roethlisbeger is now. You may be one of the last people still defending him cause he's done so much good for your franchise by winning championships that you will accept what he's done off the field, even if you don't agree with it.

Eye, I do think you're right about the Tea Party and them being a "fringe," but don't let what you see on TV about their protests and crazy behavior deter you. Some of them are playing the political game the right way, but all parties have their outliers who act like lunatics.

Well when I refer to the political game I'm talking about being able to attract people from the other side, who do only see them through what the media portrays. Libertarians on the whole are attractive even if I don't agree with them because when they act like Ron Paul, they present a clear and consistent ideology and strategy whose foundations I understand. With the Tea Party in particular, they're so negative about things that I don't want to join them.

Some figures I heard showed that some majority ~ 80-90% of the Tea Partiers voted for McCain last election and only like 5% voted for Obama. In 1992 when Perot put together a political coalition, it's members had voted like 40-35 with the rest staying home. These numbers are what I'm remembering off the top of my head but I know the ranges are within like 5-10%. Anyways, my point is, this coalition isn't going to actually change anything politically the way Perot's party managed to by persuading voters of all political histories to join. It's like the equivalent of a MoveOn.org party...yeah there will be people in it and some may not have voted last cycle, but they'll all be liberals and MoveOn has a way of pissing off people on the right (And myself, I removed myself from my mailing list because they try to get involved in every little fucking thing and ask money for it). Additionally, the Tea Party has annoyed me enough that I know I'll be voting come November, so their style has already shown (even if only slightly) to have some self-defeating effect.
