Prices went from $3.25 to $3.37 overnight. This comes after the price hike on crude oil. Which reminded me of an NM debate from years ago, about using food as a fuel source. I think we should revisit that idea. Yes, it would raise the cost of food. But would you rather be paying farmers or oil sheiks? Would you rather your money stay in the US or have it go overseas? |

I'd rather use geothermal, wind, solar, and energy. Raising the cost of food has limited impact here but huge impact in developing nations where food makes up a huge percentage of your spending. Some countries have been pushed to develop cash crops rather than subsistence crops to make money rather than food, but when global economic conditions changed, these countries faced major impacts. They had no ability to increase domestic reserves of food, so they were completely dependent on whatever the rest of the world charged (and agriculture is one industry still dominated by protectionism, so producers are always looking to get the highest prices they can). My second answer is that I don't really trust farmers either. Already we're paying billions of dollars in subsidies for ethanol, and it's having very little environmental impact. We could be paying less for a lot of food if not for American farmers grouping together in cartels (like those sheiks) to keep prices high and lobby for even more subsidies from the American taxpayer. Not as bad as the sheiks, but only because they have less power - it's still being corrupted. We couldn't produce enough food energy for all our energy demand anyways, so we'd still have to be reliant on others. Brazil's got a big ethanol industry too, and it's got its own negative consequences in the form of deforestation. If ethanol prices become competitive on their own, then I'm not against using it. But the producing nations are artificially supporting ethanol production, and I think if we're going to support some alternative energy, solar and nuclear are more worth the money. |

$3.67 is the absolute cheapest here, pretty much on all of Long Island. We're seeing some $3.99s here. On a similar note, that $3.99 place charges that CASH. If you pay credit, its $4.15!!! How can you charge 16 cents more for credit?! I've seen places going as high as 10 cents more for credit but jeez, when you're already so high and you go even higher that can't be good economics. Remember when you didn't have to pay more to use your credit card? That was in our lifetimes, funny how everything is changing so quickly. How long until every establishment starts doing that (restaurants, grocery store, etc)? |
