Anybody know anything about installing second HDDs? (Col) I have an old 80GB one from my last computer, same make as my current 250GB and I've checked, there's a spare SATA port and power cable and stuff. Thing is WinXP is still on that HDD in recovery partition and as is. Also my old files, some of which I want back are still on there. I know how to connect it and screw it in place and stuff, it's what happens after that that worries me. I want to be able to get the old files onto my newer HDD by any means, and then format it so I can use it for recording more TV. What will happen when I re-boot my PC after putting the HDD in? Does it label the drive itself? How can I get my files onto my current HDD before I format this one? Thanks |

Set up the hard drive. You claim to already know how to do that. :) When you start your computer, you will see a change in the POST screens as your computer boots (black screen with white text). Depending on your BIOS, this change may differ, but I know that if you use AWARD BIOS, you will see a list of detected hard drives pop up before Windows boots. This should happen even now, but one of your SATA ports will say "Not detected" next to it. Once you put the new drive in, the POST screen will display the model name of the new HDD in that space instead. After all the usual POST screens, you may be presented with a list which resembles the screen which appears when Windows BSODs. You know when you're given a list with Safe Mode, Command Prompt, etc? It'll look similar to that, but instead the options in the list will be Windows XP on your current hard drive, or Windows XP on your old hard drive. Either one should do, but I'd recommend your current one which you are using now. Once Windows boots, if it doesn't BSOD, then you should see a notification balloon in the corner of the screen. It will tell you that it has found new hardware. Once it's finished finding hardware, open up My Computer and a new hard drive icon will be there. Double-click it to access all files on that hard drive. To perform moe complex taskks with the drive such as reformatting, partitioning, wiping etc, it is wiser to use the Disk Management applet in the Microsoft Management Console in the Administrative Tools of the Control Panel, rather than using the usual right-click on the icon. Any further questions, just ask. :) Edit: When you see the icon in My Computer, you can use it in exactly the same way as every other disc or drive which appears there. The new drive will be automatically labelled too. So if you have these drives: Floppy A: HDD C: CD ROM D: then the new drive will be labelled "Local Disk E:". It simply advances through the alphabet. To get your files on it, just copy and paste like you would with a pen drive. :) |

Ah great, thanks Col, you've got rid of my worries. I won't see any boot-up text or memory checks though, Acer covers that stuff up with their logo on a white background. I may have to bring up the boot menu manually. Lastly, because of those damned card readers, it progressing means it'll be drive L. Although drive F is missing.. |

If the new drive doesn't appear as drive F, then drive F must have been already taken by a previous drive you once connected; possibly a USB pen drive. |
