I'm in total agreement with that.

Yep, modern games need more colour, the dark makes them to much like the real world :(

I agree - dark games are not fun to look at. I play games for fun, therefore games for me have to look enjoyable, and colour is important - bright ranges of colours make it look fun. Obviously that's not the only thing that makes a game fun, but I think dark, realistic shades of dirt and whatnot detract from enjoyment. Grandia is really colourful :D

*Looks out of bedroom window...Green? What is this monstrosity? X-( *

I don't think games look like all of the real world, just the trashy parts. :p

But yeah, colourful games tend to be the best games. Piss-like-diarrhoea with multiple shades of grey, coloured games, I tend to avoid as they tend to play like a chore.

I don't think it's a straight cut situation.
Like other people mentioned sometimes it suits the theme/atmosphere of the game.
Think about Mario games, they would look ridiculous if the dull brown colours were everywhere making the game appear very realistic. Because Mario isn't realistic, it's cartoony, it's basically some fat italian plumber on an acid trip.
Now think of it the other way, a war game, with a very serious storyline about dark themes, suddenly decides to tone up the colours, it wouldn't really work would it? (not saying it can't, but it would be incredibly difficult)

Of course, there are some exceptions where a game tries to use the wrong pallette, but the isn't necessarily happening all the time.

It's not so much the dark part of the environment that spoils the engrossing atmosphere of a game for me. It's actually the lack of colour. Modern games that attempt to make themselves look realistic are very desaturated. This makes them look overly grey (GoW anyone?) or brown, or in some cases a greeny-blue hue.

Before games can have a good range of colours, they actually need colour. It's as if games developers want us to go back to the days when TVs could only display monochrome or sepia tones, which really doesn't look realistic. Instead, it looks "toned-down" as if trying to be compatible with an uber-old TV.

Edit: And I wrote all that before actually reading the article.

The thing is, people put these complaints into post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland situations. Games can have colour, and they have it when they need to. Would you really want big bright flowers in Gears Of War, Bioshock or Metal Gear Solid? No, and that's because the enviroment fits around the storyline, the storyline doesn't fit around the enviroment.

You can't have every colour under the rainbow. Mirrors Edge will be called dull next year because it's "too" white.

I have an idea based on this topic. It will be posted in this topic, but it'll take a while. Watch this space. Well, watch this topic. I will be posting another message with my idea, not editing this space. :)

Edit: Oh I thought there would be more replies by now.

Anyway, here's my idea:

Observe, this screenshot:
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2006/...6_screen002.jpg

Now take a look at the edits I've rushed together here. They're not very good, but they portray the idea well enough:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y206/akaCol/gow_colour.jpg

Bright blue sky, blossom on trees, and that's all I could really do with that screenshot.

Now, thoughts on how that could possibly change the feel or atmosphere of the game? Obviously a proper game developer would make the blossom look a lot more realistic than that, but thoughts?

I think that yes those simple changes do change the atmosphere a lot.
But, I think it goes against the story of the game, it's meant to be depressing because the world is practically post-apocalyptic, the characters aren't exactly meant to be cheery.

Yeah, it's not supposed to be cheery. That blue sky certainly wouldn't fit with GoW, gamers wouldn't take it seriously.

With games like GOW the places are supposed to be like that, it adds to the atmosphere . :p you have to choose your colour changed carefully with games like that, stuff like very dull-green leavs etc would fit in :p

edit: Oh, coincidentally it already has the green ZD looked like it had none in col's edit ^.^

Yup. GoW isn't suppose to be a nice happy game. It's supposed to lure you into a false sense of security when-
