Over here there seems to be a much wider variety of active users, but I'd expect the majority to still be somewhere around the 13-19 age group, so this topic seems somewhat appropriate here for something different to talk about. Who here drives? Do you enjoy driving? What do you like and dislike about driving? What are your favourite and least favourite roads? What was/is your instructor like? What's your favoruite thing on a lesson or test (eg. reversing around a corner)? What scares have you had? Ever had a knock, or a more severe crash? What cars do you like? What car do you have at the moment? What car do you hope to have in the future? What car do you plan or expect to get next/first? How long have you been taking lessons? How many lessons did you take before passing the practical? How many attempts did you take at the practical? And finally ... what are your thoughts on the new, stricter, more thorough driving test being proposed by the government? |

I can't really answer most of those questions for now, but it won't be long. As for the government's ideas, I think they sound sensible so that less idiots get on the roads, because lets be fair, more than there is now would just be more painful. Do you drive, Col? Anyway, I'm off to bed now, cleaned out the bots and added some 'news' Night. |

Yeah, I've been driving for just over a year now. Or rather, I've been a license holder for just over a year. For the past month or two I haven't driven though because my dad has always had the van that I drive. His one isn't working, so he has to use mine, which is insured under him anyway so I guess he has a right. But recently I've been noticing that when I get behind the wheel, I feel like a beginner again. I'm not as bad as I was when I was on lessons, but I just feel uncomfortable, as if I've forgotten a few things. I wouldn't say I'm a bad driver though. I stick strictly to the speed limit because there are far too many mobile speed cameras around here, and if you're caught commiting a driving offence during the first two years of holding your license, then any points you get will be doubled. Not that I ever have to rush anywhere anyways. |

I'm currently learning. Got my fourth lesson tomorrow. I think I'm progressing quite well, not been out on proper roads yet though. Learnt basic skills, turning in narrow lanes (had quite a convoy going behind me XD ) and junctions. So far junctions have been hardest, just cos of all the stuff you gotta think about when doing it. Also it's gonna be hard making the transition from my instructor's car to my mum's car. His car has most modern things. Ours has nothing. No power steering, no central locking, no air-con, didn't even have a CD player till last year. It's not even that old, a 2001 Kia Rio... |

I'm 13...... Yet I'm too scared to even think of driving a car. I'm scared in case I muck up and/or crash. And it seems too complicated to me, I guess I'll just wait til God gives me the ability to teleport or fly. ^_^ |

Can only take driving tests over here when you are 18. But I probably won't take them til I'm 19 or 20. I don't see the point of taking my tests early on when I can't afford a car. |

@ Cieran: Ahk, you'll notice the lack of power steering the most. Damn it makes it so much harder to drive without it! </confidence boost> I also can't afford a car, which is why I'm insured on my dad's van. Well, the actual reason was so that I could help him with his deliveries, but that's gone up the shoot recently... It was ridiculous though. Dad has absolutely no care for anything in the world except for his shop, and the very second I passed my test, he got me driving the van. Consider this: - On your lessons, you're taught to use your mirrors and windows the most, so that you can see what's happening around you. In the van, there is no rear-view mirror, no rear window, and no rear-side windows. - The van is longer and higher than my instructor's car, which makes reversing even harder, considering that there is no way to see behind you except through wing mirrors, which have a very restricted view. - Having to get used to balancing the van on corners so as to not tip over the load in the back. Vans have a much higher centre of gravity than cars do. - While learning all of this, I had to learn my directions and where to go. - I always lock the van when I get out, no matter how long for. Nobody told me that if you lock the driver's door, it also automatically locks the fuel cap. Brilliant design from Vauxhall there - you pull into a petrol station and fill up. A thief ses that you've just filled up, so he knows he can get away with the van for a long time. But you mustn't lock the door. I took a lot more lessons that usual to pass. I passed the test on my fourth attempt and took about 50 lessons. Most people apparently are done by about 25-30 lessons. It's probably because, whenever I have to learn something new, it usually takes about 2-3 repetitions before it starts to sink in. Gears were surprisingly easy though. I was expecting them to be the hardest part. I'm still trying to decide on what to get for my first car. I'm thinking along the lines of a VW Polo, Vauxhall Corsa or Nissan Micra, with the Vauxhall being my least favourite. But I can't afford one yet anyway. Well, I can probably afford the car, but not the fuel, tax and insurance. |

Sounds like van-driving sucks. I think that, as you mentioned, having to rely on your wing mirrors to reverse would be extremely difficult, compared to having a much better view in a regular car. Also, vans are ugly. |

haha, that won't be your first car, I can promise you that! I think I've managed to whittle down my list of cars which I want for my first car. I've pretty much decided on a VW Polo. Now all I gotta do is get one, but I can't afford one. Hey Cieran - how's the lessons going? I'm not sure how you'll progress with the rest of your lessons; probably quite normally. 4 lessonsd without going on a main road sounds like a lot to me though. I had about 50 lessons in total, but that's because I'm actually a slow learner and it took me about 2-4 lessons of a particular thing before it started to sink in. Only then did I take lessons for practice or to recap. Apparently most people pass after about 25-ish lessons. Once we can all drive, we ought to meet up somewhere. That'd be cool. |

I'm 13, but I can drive perfectly well. In my Mum's old Peugot 205 (at least, I think it's a 205), which has no new fangled "power steering" etc. I don't see what all the fuss is about, really. Easy as pie. :D |

Whilst moving, no. I don't have a long enough stretch of drive/sailing club for that. :p Next year though, I'll be able to drive at Tockwith. |
