Research Firm's Black Friday Data Shows Wii U Lagging Behind in Sales![]() With stores having now closed after their Black Friday week's discounts we can expect plenty of focus on sales numbers, with the upcoming NPD results and sales around different countries eagerly awaited. Nintendo offered key bundles with Wii U and 3DS/2DS, though the consensus for the US in particular is that Microsoft slashed prices the most to push sales of the Xbox One. That seems to have paid off, at least according to research firm Infoscout, which has the Xbox One 'winning' Black Friday among home consoles. Of the consumer feedback Infoscout acquired Microsoft's current-gen system attracted 53% of home console market sales in the US, with PlayStation 4 on 31%; the Wii U claimed just 6% in its results, even behind the Xbox 360 with 9%. ![]() As you can see in the second chart, the special edition red 3DS XL with New Super Mario Bros. 2 seemed to perform well at Walmart, with a Wii U bundle taking third at Target. In another set of results asking whether a console purchase by adults was for their kids, meanwhile, Wii U was top at 92% evidence that Nintendo's family-oriented approach is at least paying some dividends. It's worth observing that this is merely data from one research firm, which by its nature isn't definitive. The data was gathered from over 180,000 receipts submitted via a smartphone app, so only represents a percentage of willing consumers as opposed to solid retail numbers. It's an indication and some interesting data, but little more. EA Cancelled Wii U SimCity Title Before The Foundations Could Be Laid ![]() Last year EA released SimCity on the PC, an ambitious update of Will Wright's genre-defining 1989 original. While it was warmly received by reviewers, it was plagued with online issues relating to the need for an "always on" connection, resulting in many fans branding it a disaster. It has since come to light that EA was working on a console version which was supposed to launch alongside the PC edition, but it was cancelled in 2011. The news comes from Liam Robertson of Unseen64 a site which has uncovered the stories behind countless unreleased games. According to Robertson, the project was intended to hit the PS3, 360 and Wii U, but never got beyond the prototype phase. SimCity started life on computers back in the late '80s, but would come to the attention of console players thanks to the superb SNES version. Super Smash Bros. Players Encounter Wii U Error Code Problem ![]() Information is currently surfacing of game and system breaking error codes for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It is important to note that these same error codes have also appeared prior to the release of the latest Smash entry for Wii U, and are not widespread problems. Error code 160-0103 is said to be appearing at random for Wii U owners, though some users have mentioned the error occurs after playing the For Glory mode and starting their system up again. According to Smash players who have encountered the issue, it is allegedly due to a problem with the system memory. One theory claims the error code is caused by the games update data, and not the Wii U itself. The error is apparent with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and all other parts of the system will function until Smash or the Data Management page on the Wii U HOME Menu is accessed. Accessing Data Management will result in error code 160-1710, and from here a series of events can unfold. Reported problems currently include complete Wii U memory wipes, and even bricked systems. Users who encountered the original error were reportedly advised to format their systems which resulted in the second error code, and then had to send their bricked Wii U to Nintendo for repair. Click on the video link below to take a look at error code 160-0103 in action: SuperSmash Bros Wii U Error Code 160-0103 Help Nintendo representative 'Julie' has posted on Miiverse regarding these errors below is the North American message. ![]() Nintendo UK has issued the same statement, below, albeit with the UK customer service number; if you encounter the issue you should visit your region's Nintendo site and find your local details: "A small percentage of consumers playing Wii U may experience error codes (160-0103 and 160-1710) that could affect the ability of the system to function properly. We are investigating this issue now. Until the solution is available, anyone that experiences these error codes can call the Nintendo contact centre at (01753) 483 743 for help and repair." Nintendo Serves Up An Infographic For Its "The Time Is Now" Wii U Campaign ![]() Over the past couple of months Nintendo has stepped up its marketing for the Wii U, evidently aware that it needs to capitalise on major releases and amiibo to promote the system and boost its sales around the world. Each region has followed its own path, and in the UK the company has been pushing a hashtag campaign, #TheTimeIsNow. A highlight of the campaign was a flashy trailer showing off exclusive Wii U games, and just recently Nintendo's tweeted a link to a rather attractive infographic/survey, which can be seen above, that tries to emphasize the gaming goodness on the system. Capcom's Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Infographic Shows Off the Size of the Game's Challenges ![]() Last week, Capcom released this Monster Hunter 4 Infographic. This Capcom release shows off the real-world sizes of a number of monsters, giving an appreciation for how much havoc they'd cause if ever they were real. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is already out in Japan, though we'll get our hands on it in the West in early 2015. Nintendo Reveals New Wii U Footage and Details for The Legend of Zelda, Still Set for 2015 ![]() During the Game Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, Nintendo was given a prime slot to showcase all-new footage of The Legend of Zelda on Wii U, with Eiji Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto discussing gameplay features and re-affirming that the title will arrive in 2015, with the new Star Fox due before the adventure title. The demonstration began with the legendary game designers talking over the size of the world, highlighting that there'll be a number of high vantage points in order to look across the landscape. After spotting a landmark using the GamePad's motion controls and setting a waypoint beacon with a flashing light, we were shown that the Sailcloth from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will make a return. The GamePad usage was shown in a variety of ways. It is used to display a map, showing waypoints, and it demonstrated the impressive size of the environment it was made clear that we were only privy to seeing part of the whole world. We were then shown a horse ride with Epona, in which it was essentially on auto-pilot, with the GamePad used for moving the camera and looking around. Miyamoto-san highlighted how many small details can be seen, and then it was demonstrated that the player can use their sword and bow, freely and easily, while on Epona; gyroscope aiming seems to be an option. There is also a slow motion dismount that allows the player to take out enemies with the bow. Towards the end of the presentation Aonuma-san reaffirmed that the game is due in 2015, while Miyamoto-san stated that Star Fox for Wii U is progressing for a release before The Legend of Zelda, also next year.
