Bandai Namco Announces Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy Plus For 3DS

    Posted Image

Rookie pilots – at least in Japan – will soon be able to take to the skies once again, with Bandai Namco earlier this week announcing Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy Plus for 3DS in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine.

This new entry in the series is essentially an enhanced version of the 2012 3DS title, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy. The original 3DS debut for Ace Combat was known as Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble in Japan and was a remake of Ace Combat 2.

The latest aerial combat game will feature amiibo support. Including the ability to scan in Nintendo characters as jet designs, and will also utilise the improved 3D and additional buttons on the New 3DS.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy Plus will be released in Japan on January 29, 2015.

Art Academy for Wii U Pushed Back to 2015 in North America

    Posted Image

Art Academy for Wii U, which will be an eShop-only release, has had a low profile existence, enduring delays and only occasional mentions by Nintendo. The full release follows the 2013 arrival of the pared-back Art Academy: SketchPad. The updated release will have the lessons and full tool-set typically associated with the series.

Nintendo's previously confirmed, in its financial results notes at the end of October, that the title is now down as a 2015 arrival in Europe. It's a subtle delay due to the limited profile the app's enjoyed. The official North American game page has now also been updated to '2015', however, formalizing the global delay of the title. With Nintendo being rather busy this is perhaps no surprise, while it can help flesh out — potentially — the line-up in the early part of next year. Rodea the Sky Soldier Now Flying Into a Spring 2015 Release in Japan, for Wii U and 3DS

    Posted Image

Rodea the Sky Soldier has had a troubled history. When originally announced for Wii and 3DS this flying action title certainly caught the eye, with the development team at Prope being led by the highly regarded Yuji Naka, one of the creators of Sonic the Hedgehog. It then seemed to enter the publishing void, however, with Naka-san saying in September 2012 that the Wii version had been finished for a year at that point, while the 3DS version was up in the air. The finger was very much pointed at publisher Kadokawa Games.

In July 2013, however, Kadokawa Games' President, Yoshimi Yasuda insisted that despite a long silence and delay on the project it was still heading for release. At that point the 3DS version was supposedly around 70% complete, while there seemed to be no positive outlook for the Wii version, with the system long since replaced and having lost all momentum in the marketplace. As over a year has passed since that update it'd be tempting to conclude that those comments from the publisher were hot air, yet the game is back again, this time with a Wii U version — to join the 3DS iteration — and a Spring 2015 release in Japan.

The shift to Wii U is no surprise, and a Famitsu report states that Kadokawa is now 'co-developing', which many are interpreting as finishing off the work primarily completed by Prope, with the studio having finished its work — as stated by Yuji Naka — long ago. Kadokawa’s Zin Hasegawa is reportedly now the director in place of Naka-san.

It looks like this title will finally hit Wii U and 3DS, then, though its days of generating substantial hype are long past. It'll be interesting to see if it does arrive in Japan next year, and also whether it'll eventually make its way to the West. Below is a trailer from way back in 2011:

Splatoon's Japanese Twitter Account Inks Out a Few Details

    Posted Image

While the world waits for what is guaranteed to be the greatest shooter featuring squidomorphic creatures to date, the official Japanese Twitter account for Splatoon has been happily dispensing screenshots and information from the upcoming title. Someone has been gracious enough to translate many of these tweets, which have been gathered into a thread on NeoGAF.

The tweets seem to be modeled as notes from a fictitious squid research agency, which is a bit odd but far from the weirdest thing this game has thrown at us so far. According to the translations, the headliner image at the top of this article features the "Hero Suit," worn by what is presumed to be your character in the single-player mode:

"Investigation Report from the Squid Research Lab. This is the 'Hero Suit'. It is worn by the protagonist in 'Hero Mode'. It has a different feel to the regular clothes. According to our theory, it is designed to resemble a fire fly squid. The glowing translucent lights covering it are beautiful."

    Posted Image

Above is another screenshot from the Hero Mode. This one seems to shed a small crack of light onto the way the antagonist Octopus Army operates:

"Investigative Report from the Squid Research Lab. The protagonist, wearing the Hero Suit, travels through this underground world. The Octopus Army Corps, hoping to invade the Squid's world, built this underground facility. Is it just me that feels the Octopus' longing for the world above-ground from the blue sky projected onto those large monitors?"

Now a focus on some of the primary weapons found in the game. The sniper rifle-like Charge Gun looks like the coolest Super Soaker ever, but the Paint Roller might provide a satisfying up close and personal experience:

"Report from the Squid Research Labs. Your main way of painting the ground in ink and attacking enemies is the Paint Gun, which shoots using the ZR button. There's many different types of weapons, including the Charge Gun, which allows you to hit at a distance and the Roller, which is useful in close-range combat."

    Posted Image

    Sub-weapons will also be equipable:

"Report from the Squid Research Labs. You can use 'sub-weapons' by tapping the R-Button. Pictured is the 'Splash Bomb' which explodes, shooting ink over the immediate area. It doesn't just hurt your opponents, it also has tactical uses, including distracting enemies or exposing hiding ones, too."

    Posted Image

And the score-keeping cat is still a cat:

"Investigative Report from the Squid Research Lab. This cat is the referee who decides the winner of each match. They can determine who has the largest covered area in an instant. But why is there a solitary cat in this world of squid....? This mystery is yet to be solved."

There are a few additional images to be found on the NeoGAF Thread, and more translations may be added over time.

Mario Kart 8 Software Update and DLC Available Now

    Posted Image

While there are some blockbuster titles arriving in stores this week, everybody is looking forward to one thing above all else — Mario Kart 8 DLC. The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8 includes eight tracks, three characters and four vehicles. The good news is that it's available now, ahead of the usual Nintendo Download update time. There are two Mario Kart 8 downloads active in Europe and North America.

    Update to Version 3.0

If you have standby updates and downloads enabled this may have automatically downloaded to your system already, and will be installed — or finish downloading — when you load the game. This update adds amiibo support, with the Start (+) button now loading an amiibo menu on the home screen of the game. It's here that you can scan compatible figures to unlock Mii Racing Suits.

The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8 DLC

Once you boot up the game it notifies you that your DLC content is ready to download. You can either wait for it to download the 687 MB file, carry on playing or leave the game. If you do tell it to download in the background you'll need to reboot the software when it's complete in order to access the content.

When playing online, meanwhile, you can choose a setting to only join lobbies with other DLC owners, ensuring the new tracks will cycle around. In general the game is quite generous at offering a new track in the majority of rounds.

Little Mac Is Officially The Least Successful Fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

    Posted Image

There's an upcoming patch for Super Smash Bros. on 3DS that will tweak balancing in the game, yet while some will call for that change to weaken Little Mac, statistics suggest that such changes may not be necessary.

Multiple Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS players been on the end of some sound thrashings by Little Mac players in the online For Glory mode — with a gauge that can deliver instant KOs and powerful combinations he can be a beast to fight when in the hands of a skilled player. He's also what should be considered a specialist character, however, as his default side special can be awkward to execute and — in particular — he's an appalling jumper. The odds of recovery when smashed off the stage are rather slim with the underdog boxer.

A combination of these factors seems to have contributed to Little Mac being — statistically — the worst character in the game. Nobody loses more than the plucky fighter, with Sakurai-san explaining the reasoning in detail:

"For Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the individual character win ratios lined up nicely in a staircase format, but [for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS] one fighter has a significantly low ratio. It's Little Mac.

Little Mac is a fighter with very pronounced strengths and weaknesses. While he has an enhanced dodge and megaton-level punch for aggressive play, he has very weak jump power and a simple back throw along with a follow-up attack prove to be crippling.

It appears that the biggest reason for his low win ratio is because people fall under the assumption that 'Little Mac is strong!' and all rush to use him only to get pummeled in return. He gives the impression of being able to win easier than other fighters which leads to more people using him, but in reality, he's a difficult character to actually continuously win with."

To those expecting these patches to ultimately balance characters out to have similar overall stats, however, there's a categorical rejection of the idea from the game's lead designer:

"I believe that averaging out character stats is a bad move in both play and competition."

So there you have it, while talented players can certainly clean house with Little Mac, coming across the boxer in an online match doesn't necessarily mean that defeat is inevitable. If anything, you should fancy your chances.

Loot Crate amiibo Details and Pricing are Confirmed

    Posted Image

Last week it was announced that there would be a Loot Crate amiibo subscription package — it's a service where you pay monthly in return for regular deliveries of goodies.

This is a Nintendo of America partnership, and details have now been confirmed for the amiibo subscription deal. It's limited to the US only, despite Loot Crate typically being available in a number of countries. The final offering is over three weeks, with the following delivered each week:

    - Week 1 — 4 amiibo (Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby and Pikachu), a collectible mini-mag, plus an exclusive sticker & wristband.

    - Week 2 — 4 amiibo (Fox, Yoshi, Peach and Samus), a collectible mini-mag, plus an exclusive cinch bag.

    - Week 3 — 2 amiibo (Luigi and Zelda), a collectible mini-mag, plus an ultra rare t-shirt

10 amiibo and some goodies, then, but the pricing may make some think twice. There are two payment options, either weekly or a slight reduction for a one-off payment:

    - $55 per week for three weeks — total of $165
    - One off payment of $155

The amiibo figures are typically around $12.99 at retail, so the 10 on offer are worth about $130, with the rest accounting for the extras such as the magazines. It's a lot of money to put down, while there's naturally a lot more flexibility in simply choosing from the range yourself. By February 2015 there'll be 29 toys available in total, 18 of those before the end of 2014. You can visit the official website for details:
