Within the past couple of days, a LOT has been going on with Nintendo, as ideas to expand their company arise. Read below to catch up on important details announced at Nintendo's Management Policy Briefing and Semi-Annual Financial Results Briefing earlier this week: Hyrule Warriors Sales Exceed Expectations Outside Japan ![]() Hyrule must be a crowded place, what with all the heroes lining up to buy Hyrule Warriors and fight monsters. While exact numbers aren’t available, Koei Tecmo has announced that early Hyrule Warriors sales are exceeding expectations internationally. At a Q&A event detailing the results of the first half of Koei Tecmo’s fiscal year, the developer announced that their The Legend of Zelda x Dynasty Warriors crossover title met sales expectations in Japan. In North America and Europe, however, the title sold beyond what was expected, according to a translation from a NeoGAF member. Koei Tecmo aims for even greater sales in the second half of their fiscal year, ending March 31, 2015. Keoi Tecmo had hoped to eventually sell 500,000 copies of Hyrule Warriors, but due to their relationship with Nintendo they couldn’t say outright if they met that goal yet. Wii U Sales Now 7.29 Million Worldwide ![]() Wii U sales have been notoriously lackluster ever since the console launched in November 2012. But with popular games now out such as Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Nintendo’s home system appears to be picking up some steam. According to Nintendo’s “Consolidated Financial Highlights” document publicly released on October 29th, 7.29 million Wii U units have been sold worldwide. Back in May, Nintendo announced that 6.17 million Wii U units had been sold worldwide, and their forecasts predicted another 3.6 million consoles would be sold by March 2015. To reach that goal, Nintendo will need to sell 2.5 million more Wii U systems. If they plan on succeeding, they’ll need to pick up the pace just a little more: only 1.21 million Wii U units were sold between April 1 and September 30 of this year. Nintendo’s handheld business hasn’t done too bad either. Total worldwide lifetime sales of the Nintendo 3DS are now at 45.42 million units. Of those, 17.16 million were Nintendo 3DS XL systems, while 2.63 million were Nintendo 2DS systems. Regarding software, Nintendo has already sold 41.67 million Wii U titles and a massive 186.22 million Nintendo 3DS titles. With the holiday season approaching, Nintendo can almost certainly expect those numbers to get a little larger soon. Bile Duct Surgery A Thing Of The Past For Satoru Iwata ![]() The man is back in charge. According to a report from Reuters, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has made a full recovery from his June bile duct surgery. The president has resumed all of his full-time duties with the video game company. Iwata-san first announced that he had a growth on his bile duct just before this year’s E3 conference and was unable to make the trip to the United States at the time. Soon after, he underwent a successful surgery to have the growth removed, but his involvement with Nintendo was limited to phone calls and email. Mr. Iwata even missed the 74th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in June. Despite his absence, his approval rating went up. Satoru Iwata told reporters that he lost weight, but feels healthier. This is good news for Nintendo fans, who were going bananas in his absence. Satoru Iwata Outlines Nintendo's First QOL Platform ![]() Since its announcement in January this year, Nintendo intrigued and confused some observers when it outlined plans to produce a Quality of Life — or QOL — platform. It was explained that it would be an entirely separate product from game systems — with some potential for overlapping apps and games in future — that would be focused on Health as a theme. Satoru Iwata explained that it would be non-wearable technology, and the latest Investor Briefing from the company's Q2 Financial Results has shed some light on this product. The focus is sleep and fatigue, with the goal of helping users improve their rest while following five key principles for the final product — Non-Wearable, Non-Contact, Non-Operating, Non-Waiting, Non-Installation efforts. These five priorities are designed to ensure that users don't forget or decide not to use the tool, meaning that it can be helpful without requiring input or management from the consumer. This will be done with a QOL sensor, placed beside the bed: "Inside the QOL Sensor is a non-contact radio frequency sensor, which measures such things as the movements of your body, breathing and heartbeat, all without physically touching your body. This automatically gathered data will be transmitted to the QOL cloud servers, which will then analyze the data measured by the sensor and visually represent sleep and fatigue results." Nintendo has partnered with key academic figures in Japan and US tech company ResMed; the latter "manufactures and markets medical equipment for the treatment, diagnosis and management of Sleep Disordered Breathing, COPD and other chronic diseases", and is producing and providing the key technology. Readings from the sensor will be automatically uploaded to the Cloud (online), and there'll be methods — potentially including apps on smart devices and even Nintendo systems — of notifying users and recommending specific exercises or diet improvements. The QOL aspect is in daily results and, all going well, tracking improved sleep and reduced fatigue. ![]() Iwata-san emphasized that this is an expansion of Nintendo's markets, much like its move from Hanafuda cards into toys and video games throughout the 20th Century. The first QOL product is slated for 2016 and will expand Nintendo's "definition of 'platform'". ![]() Pre-Download Feature Coming To Wii U, Nintendo 3DS ![]() Nintendo plans to introduce a “pre-download” feature for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS systems, allowing players to download the bulk of the game files for digital titles prior to their release date—something already available on PlayStation and Xbox devices. The first game to feature pre-download will be Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, launching November 21 in North America. Players can advance purchase digital copies of the game through the Nintendo eShop to begin the main download, the company announced at their financial briefing meeting today. The game won’t be playable, however, until a small update is downloaded on the day of the game’s release. This feature will cut down on Nintendo’s server strain when big-name titles are released. It will also reduce waiting time for players by performing most of the download well in advance. Nintendo 3DS games will be able to use the pre-download feature as well starting sometime in 2015. Limited-Time Amiibo Figures Are On The Way ![]() Now globally launched across all regions, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has made its presence known to Nintendo fans. And the world. But Nintendo’s home console version of the bare-knuckled brawler, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, delivers its final blow in just three weeks. Releasing alongside the Wii U version of the game is the first wave of amiibo figures. A second wave will make a splash in December, and more will continue to flood retailers throughout 2015. However, some of the palm-sized NFC-enabled toys won’t stick around for the long haul: they’ll be limited-time amiibo figures. During Nintendo’s “Semi-Annual Financial Results Briefing,” held 2 days ago in Japan, Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata outlined additional plans for amiibo. Mr. Iwata says he hopes that people who can’t immediately afford to purchase software “may be able to afford to purchase character figures one by one.” He further notes that because store shelf space is limited, some amiibo “will remain stocked on the shelves as staple choices while some will be limited-time offers which will cede their positions to new ones once they are sold out.” Iwata-san also revealed more details about how Nintendo’s Quality of Life (QOL) platform will work. New Nintendo 3DS Sales Stronger Than Past Remodels ![]() Initial New Nintendo 3DS sales figures from Japan reveal that the handheld system is the fastest-selling remodeled device in Nintendo’s history. The New Nintendo 3DS outpaced the Nintendo 3DS XL/LL, the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo DSi XL/LL when comparing sales from each systems’ first three weeks. Combined sales of the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL/LL systems have surpassed 400,000 units since the devices launched on October 11 in Japan. Nintendo previously announced that the systems moved a combined 230,000 units within their first two days. The three graphs below compare the New Nintendo 3DS sales in its first three weeks on shelves with the sales data for the Nintendo 3DS XL/LL, the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo DSi XL/LL The New Nintendo 3DS has sold faster than all previous remodeled devices and managed to move close to 100,000 units during both its second and third weeks. The New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL/LL systems were released October 11 in Japan. They will arrive on November 21 in Australia and New Zealand. The systems won’t launch in North America and Europe until sometime in 2015. ![]() ![]()
