The New Nintendo 3DS Web Filter Doesn't Block Adult Content From Google Images![]() The New Nintendo 3DS is now out in Japan. The new models will definitely boost sales of the hardware in the country. It has various new features, such as a faster CPU, the C-stick and improved stereoscopic 3D viewing. The New Nintendo 3DS web browser automatically blocks adult websites. It can only be disabled by paying a nominal fee of 30 Yen (about 28 cents in the US) with a credit card. This required payment is exceptionally low yet, of course, a young child won't own a credit card to disable it — it's a useful tool for parents that need a little extra help protecting their kids from explicit content, and is an extra layer beyond the existing parental control options. It seems it's not perfect, though, and Kotaku, a video game-focused blog, has figured out that the browser has the same weakness as in the previous systems, in spite of the additional layer of security. On the positive side it does automatically block adult and even dating websites, but it fails to deal with Google Images. While various terms were successfully filtered in terms of accessing websites, the same searches in Google Images returned inappropriate results. Considering that a lot of children are just as goog at using technology as many adults nowadays, this could naturally be a problem. It's not easy, of course, to successfully block everything, though it is possible that we may see a future system update that attempts to close and limit this loophole. Considering Nintendo's strong relationship with Google, with various projects between the companies in recent years, it's possible that a solution can be found. Ubisoft Announces Release Date for Tetris Ultimate on 3DS ![]() Ubisoft's latest Tetris game, Tetris Ultimate, will be skipping the Wii U. It will still be coming on the 3DS, however, and Tetris Ultimate on the portable will feature exclusive modes and gameplay to make use of the hardware. Ubisoft has now confirmed release dates for the title, including the pricing details. Tetris Ultimate will hit the 3DS eShop and stores on 11th November — the boxed version will arrive in the UK on 14th November, though — and will cost less on the eShop. While European retailers set their own pricing and eShop pricing details for the region weren't given, the North American press release has confirmed that the game will have a recommended price of $29.99 but will cost just $19.99 on the eShop. Whether that points to limited physical retail stock is not known, but it's not often that the download version costs less than a physical copy, though Nintendo did something similar with its boxed version of New Super Luigi U. That was originally DLC. Below is a summary of the 3DS features straight from the press release: - Marathon – Complete level 15 and rack up as many points as you can. - Endless – Keep clearing lines until your stamina runs out! - Ultra – Race to score as many points possible before time runs out in this three-minute challenge. - Sprint – Clear 40 lines as quickly as you can. - Battle – Go head-to-head to knock out 1-4 challengers. - Battle Ultimate – Be the last person playing after using crazy power-ups! Go on the offensive with Carousel and make your opponent’s Well shift to the left after each move, or trigger Let it Rain and dump garbage down on top of them. Buzz Saw helps you out by clearing away a number of your lines, especially useful when you’re in a spot of trouble. - Challenge – With four mode variants, be prepared for a variety of challenges that will put any player’s determination to the test: - Master – The Tetriminos drop instantly and appear at the bottom. - Rotation Lock – The orientation of the Tetriminos are random and you cannot rotate them. - Escalation – As the game levels up, you’ll have to clear more lines - Invisible – The Tetriminos become invisible as they drop to the bottom. New Nintendo 3DS Kisekae Faceplates Join Upcoming Smash Bros. Set ![]() The New Nintendo 3DS may be a while away for most territories, but it's enjoying its first week since release in Japan. The substantial range of Kisekae faceplates are selling rather well, too, and Nintendo's already lining up more designs to supplement the 38 varieties already available. First of all we have Number 39 in the range, which is a Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS design due to arrive on 8th November — this is also available to Pre-order for import on sites such as Play-Asia. Nintendo's official website, meanwhile, is advertising the first two of a Kawaii (cute) range; you can see these below: ![]() If you click on the video link below, you can see an incredibly colorful and cute commercial that Nintendo released in late September to promote the Kisekae accessories: New Nintendo 3DS - TV Commercial #2 Curve Studios Announces Release Dates of Four Wii U Titles ![]() Curve Studios has a strong history of working on Nintendo hardware, perhaps most notably with Nintendo-published titles Fluidity on WiiWare and Fluidity: Spin Cycle on the 3DS eShop. The development studio's work goes way beyond those two games, and it's been responsible for a range of other original games and ports across multiple platforms. Its support for Wii U is about to kick into gear, meanwhile, and the studio's outlined an upcoming month in which four of its anticipated projects, including Stealth Inc 2, a system exclusive, will land on the system. Curve Studios tweeted the following release dates, which are worldwide: - Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut — 16th October - Stealth Inc 2 — 30th October - The Swapper — 6th November - Thomas Was Alone — Late November Ubisoft To Release Two New Entries in the Petz Franchise ![]() Ubisoft has announced that it is launching two new entries in its long-running Petz franchise. Petz Beach and Petz Countryside will launch on the Nintendo 3DS this month, and will allow players to look after 50 different animal types. The two games will feature connectivity with one another, and will also utilize the 3DS' StreetPass functionality to allow players to exchange items with one another. Both will also make use of the console's facial recognition tech to create a more "unique" bonding experience with each pet. Ubisoft is distributing the games exclusively via Amazon in the UK, with both titles launching on October 17th. The Petz series has sold over 23 million units across multiple formats. Watch Dogs Companion App Now Compatible With Wii U ![]() Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs for Wii U is due out next month, and new details about the long-awaited release continue to surface. After a series of ongoing promises, an eventual confirmation that the game was in fact on its way to Nintendo’s latest home console, and follow-up news that the Wii U entry would not include any downloadable content, the latest update reveals surprisingly positive information. The Watch Dogs companion application has recently received an update making it compatible with the Nintendo version of the game. By using this app, players will be able to play the game with friends on the Wii U or any other console (or PC). Race and Free Ride modes are both supported as well. Watch Dogs for Wii U is due out in North America on 18th November and Europe on 21st November. Wii U Owner Proves That Rejecting The End-User License Agreement Locks The System ![]() Not too long ago, in late September, Nintendo provided a major system update that enhanced the functionality of the Wii U and made changes to its functionality. Around that time there was also a change to the End-User License Agreement (EULA), which is a legal contract that the vast majority simply agree to as quickly as possible. YouTube user "AMurder0fCrows" did not agree, however, objecting to a passage in the document that stated Nintendo could apply updates and changes without notice. In practice, updating systems while they're in sleep mode, which in its most harmless guise could be uploads of SpotPass notifications. What this Wii U owner has documented is that, without agreeing to the amended EULA, the console cannot be used — software won't load until it is accepted, and as there's no option to decline the agreement the only workaround is to turn off the power. No agreement to the EULA, no more games. You can see his video below: Nintendo Wii U EULA Update Lock There are valid points here, in that Nintendo — like its contemporaries in the tech industry — is 'forcing' agreement in order to continue using the system fully. There's no scope to decline. It's also an inevitable and common part of modern technology and how we use it — especially as we demand substantial online services. Online and download content — games, books, music, films etc — are essentially 'leased' to us, in that the licensor can in theory remove access at any point. Yet the important point is that consumers do have some power, in that they control demand. If a company like Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft were to wrongly abuse our trust and take away functionality, content or games, they run the risk of losing customers. They're in control, but they need consumers to be happy and promoting their brands. It's a relatively balanced relationship. This video is interesting as a test, undoubtedly, though, most likely, 99.9% of Wii U owners will, when the EULA is tweaked in future, simple scroll down and choose Accept. |
