3DS Games Have Sold More Than One Million Copies in Japan in 2013

    Posted Image

While Nintendo may have endured some disappointment in hitting its own high targets for 3DS in the past 12-18 months, positive statistics do nevertheless keep coming for the portable system, especially in Japan. Not long ago we saw 3DS titles dominate the charts for the first six months of the year in the country, with Mario Kart 8 as a welcome imposer for Wii U. Those half year results show that 2014 could be rather similar to 2013, in terms of 3DS titles leading the way as the biggest selling games over the whole year. A compilation of the top-selling games for last year show that only games on Nintendo's portable enjoyed sales in excess of a million in Japan. The top ten is below, with lifetime sales for that period also in brackets.

    1. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 — 3,110,240 (3,110,240)
    2. [3DS] Pokémon X — 1,967,479 (1,967,479)
    3. [3DS] Pokémon Y — 1,759,117 (1,759,117)
    4. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf — 1,628,044 (3,597,999)
    5. [3DS] Tomodachi Life — 1,612,037 — 1,612,037
    6. [3DS] Dragon Quest VII: Fighters of Eden — 1,237,825 (1,237,825)
    7. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons Z — 1,005,658 (1,005,658)
    8. [3DS] Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon — 1,003,188 (1,003,188)
    9. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V — 649,091 (649,091)
    10. [PS3] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle — 483,378 (483,378)

The more things change in 2014 the more they potentially stay the same, too, with Monster Hunter 4G and Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arriving later this year and likely to perform rather well. Nintendo is no doubt hoping that Mario Kart 8 can creep towards one million sales for Wii U, along with other major releases on the home console in the second half of the year.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate-Themed 3DS XL Accessories To Be Released On October 11

    Posted Image

The hype stirred up in the lead up to the release of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was bound to cause the production of some themed accessories for the system it graces, but nothing could have prepared the gaming community for this overload of cuteness. The Felyne race has been a favourite amongst fans since it's inception, and Capcom are clearly looking to try and profit from their likability with this array of accessories for the 3DS XL. The set includes decals for the inside of your console, a sleeve for transportation, a hard shell for protection, and an obligatory cleaning cloth, all themed around the feisty Felynes. It's certainly the full package for a certain breed of gamer, but for those less Felyne-inclined there's also a standard Monster Hunter-themed set. Both the Felyne and standard sets are available for pre-order from Play-Asia.com and will be shipped in October.

Thorium Wars: Attack of the Skyfighter Comes Out on 3DS eShop on 28th August

    Posted Image

Before E3 this year, Nintendo unveiled an impressive range of eShop trailers that announced some brand new games. One of these was Thorium Wars: Attack of the Skyfighter for the 3DS eShop, developed by 3PM Games and published by Big John Games. As a sequel to the rather good DSiWare original, there's certainly cause for optimism with this new entry. It's all about air combat and lots of shooting, with three varieties of aircraft available, multiple difficulty levels and medals to win. A simple formula, but one that can certainly be a lot of fun when executed well.

North American gamers don't have long to wait to see whether it lives up to its predecessor, as Thorium Wars: Attack of the Skyfighter lands on the 3DS eShop on 28th August with a price of $7.99. Unfortunately European release details aren't confirmed as yet. You can see a trailer below:

Mighty No. 9 & Azure Striker Gunvolt Crossover Has Been Confirmed

    Posted Image

Fans of pixel-based 2D action games should be on alert, as Azure Striker Gunvolt arrives in North America on 28th August. The latest project from Inti Creates, with consultancy from Keiji Inafune, is certainly full of promise. Japanese gamers have an extra and free treat to go with the title's release in the country (20th August), and that's Mighty Gunvolt. It's a rather neat cross-over — with awesome 8-bit styled visuals — with playable characters: Gunvolt from Azure Striker Gunvolt, Beck from Mighty No. 9 and Ekoro from Galgun, and will also apparently have DLC of new bosses and stages in the future. It's a free download for Azure Striker Gunvolt owners in Japan until 19th November, which gives even more 2D action for 3DS gamers to enjoy.

It has also been recently confirmed that Mighty Gunvolt will be free for those that buy Azure Striker Gunvolt in North America. You can get a glance of Mighty Gunvolt at around the 4:30 minute mark in the video below, while a couple of screens are below that:

Zen Studios Announces Another Three Stages for Zen Pinball 2

    Posted Image

Zen Pinball 2 remains a unique app on the Wii U eShop, because it's free to download and then offers a range of packs and individual tables to buy. Fans of the game on Wii U have perhaps been frustrated that a number of new tables released elsewhere have failed to materialise, but following up news of The Walking Dead's table arriving on 28th August on Wii U, Zen Studios has confirmed another three tables that'll also arrive on the same day. These are Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool and Doctor Strange. All three have previously been available on other systems, but show the developer's intent to update the Wii U content to be more in line with its contemporaries. Pricing has also been confirmed for these four tables that'll hit next week — they'll cost $2.99 each.

GameStop President Has Faith For The Wii U

    Posted Image

It may be safe to say that Nintendo's Wii U hasn't been universally acclaimed by gamers and developers alike, but then again what console has? GameStop's president Tony Bartel expressed his opinions on the Japanese giant's latest hardware:

"We've been very consistent every time we're asked about the Wii U, really what they needed was two things: they needed strong first-party titles, which we think that they are getting; and they also needed to do a better job of explaining exactly what the connected tablet--as we like to call it--how you actually use that. I think they are going to do a great job on both of those."

It's an influential vote of confidence for the Wii U to have, and given Nintendo's strong presence at both E3 and Gamescom recently along with the upcoming slew of first-party exclusives, the console really is growing in popularity. GameStop's vice president Mike Hogan added that Mario Kart 8 was likely the first indicator that things were improving, having sold nearly 3 million copies to date worldwide. Bartel also made his position on Amiibo clear, stating that he "would not sell Amiibo short either". Judging by the popularity of the the Skylanders and Disney Infinity series Nintendo could be appealing to an entirely new audience, and the figures' ability to be used across multiple games is not only more incentive to buy the models, but to buy more than one of the games they are compatible with.

Monopoly: Pokémon Kanto Edition To Be Sold At GameStop On August 30th

    Posted Image

As a board game representation of cold-blooded capitalism, Monopoly is rather brutal — up to six entrepreneurs start with the same level of capital and acquire land as quickly as possible, before then applying hefty rent charges for merely standing on the land. The goal is to bankrupt the other players. It's a cruel world. Yet still, it's fun, and we've had some awesome Nintendo-themed editions, with the upcoming Legend of Zelda set being an example. Pokémon fans haven't been left out, however, as the previously confirmed Kanto edition — accompanying a previously released Pokémon version — has emerged at retailers such as GameStop in North America, with a release date of 30th August. It includes plenty of neat Pokémon-themed features, too:

    - Pokémon themed game board features the Kanto Region and all eight gyms
    - 6 collectible metal tokens: Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Eevee, Jigglypuff
    - Custom sculpted Poké Marts and Pokémon Centers replace traditional Houses & Hotels

With this just a week away I'm sure some fans are already browsing multiple retailers to look for the best deal. This does seem to be North American only right now. Enjoy the image below:

I think it's pretty funny how a relatively unheard of game made on the side by Comcept looks a lot better than the game they received several million dollars to create.
