Sony's Shuhei Yoshida Says Nintendo Provides Balance In A Video Game Industry Obsessed With Military Shooters![]() Sony's president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has always had good words to say about Nintendo — he owns not one but two Wii U consoles, after all. He shows no sign of giving up his friendly relationship with the Kyoto firm, and has made some very positive noises in a recent interview with GamesIndustry International. Discussing the reaction Sony got with LittleBigPlanet 3, Yoshida said that Nintendo provided "balance" to a business which is saturated by me-too shooting titles: "I was very happy to get a very positive reaction when we announced LittleBigPlanet 3. We are concerned a little bit when we work on a game like LittleBigPlanet 3, about how people will react, because people want those big-budget, realistic, military shooters. But there were lots of cheers, a lot of affection. And the reaction to Nintendo's games in general, or a game like Splatoon. If you look at the whole industry, and you consider Nintendo, I think the balance is actually better than past years." "Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot" Update to Add Online Rankings ![]() Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot has received a discount and free demo arriving in Europe on 17th July. Developer CoderChild has confirmed that this is actually part of a promotion accompanying a free update to the game. Aiming to respond to gamer feedback, the developer stated that this update — which should be the default version for copies downloaded from 17th July — will feature improved controls. On top of that there'll be online rankings tied to a new game mode. This mode is outlined as including redesigned levels and visuals, in addition to an alternative method of progression. The scoreboards will also display rankings by country, there are some assorted bug fixes, and in a minor change, usernames can also be longer. The upcoming price discount — €2.00 ($2.70) / Ł1.80 ($3.08) from 17th to 24th July — is a nice combination with the update. It'll certainly be worth consideration. North American gamers have a slightly longer wait, though CoderChild hopes the update will hit the region within the next month. Sony: PS4 Is "Welcoming Back" Wii Owners Who Skipped PS3 And Xbox 360 Last Generation ![]() Wii owners who decided against buying a PS3 or 360 are flocking to the PS4 in groups, according to Sony Computer Entertainment boss, Andrew House. Speaking to Eurogamer at the recent Develop conference in the UK, House echoed recent statements made by Sony Worldwide Studios senior VP of product development Scott Rohde. He says that data — as well as his personal knowledge — points to a mass migration of Wii owners to the shiny new PS4 console: "Our big opportunity is to welcome back an audience much earlier in the lifecycle that possibly bought into the Wii previously. Whether it's based on this is a really good all-round entertainment device for a family in addition to having great games, our consumer data suggests some of those people are already coming in now and that's what's contributing to the really great sales we've had." To back up his claim, House cites data which suggests that 40% of PS4 owners didn't have a PlayStation Plus account previously, which could mean they were upgrading from the Wii: "To me, that was a good indication of whether they were new to this world. And anecdotally I've had people who were the Wii generation and who are back in the consideration set. It's certainly something I hear about." House says that titles like The Last of Us Remastered are designed with such consumers in mind. People who missed out on the PS3 version of the game will be able to pick up the definitive version on their PS4 system: "I hesitate to say this because I know committed gamers may roll their eyes about it, but there's an opportunity with some of the remastering or re-imagining from PS3 franchises that will potentially find an audience that hasn't played them in the previous generation because they skipped that generation. We're starting to see signs of that." The PS4 is the fastest-selling console in the history of the UK games industry and has now shifted seven million units worldwide. Golden Sun: The Lost Age Hitting Japanese Wii U Virtual Console Next Week ![]() We've already seen the excellent Golden Sun on the Wii U Virtual Console, and next week Japanese players will be getting their hands on the equally brilliant sequel. Golden Sun: The Lost Age was originally released on the Game Boy Advance in Japan in 2002 (and a year later in North America and Europe) and picks up where the first title left off. Characters and items can be transferred from the original by use of a password system. The third game in the series, Dark Dawn, followed on the DS in 2010. Archie Comics Announces Sonic Boom Comic Book Series to Accompany Games and Animated Show ![]() Sega is determined to make 2014 the year of Sonic, launching its Sonic Boom spin-off universe with two games — Rise of Lyric on Wii U and Shattered Crystal on 3DS — accompanying a CGI animated series and a range of toys. Ahead of San Diego Comic-Con, Archie Comics has confirmed that there'll also be a comic book series based on the franchise. Well-known writer Ian Flynn will head the project, while Evan Stanley will produce art. Collectors may also be pleased to know that the first issue will come with four alternative covers that combine to form a single image, below: ![]() In terms of the character traits and story style that can be expected, Flynn had the following to say to IGN: "Sonic is still pretty much what you’d expect – quick-witted, playful, and snarky. Tails is likewise very much the same as he’s been in the current games – an equal partner in Sonic’s adventures. Knuckles has gotten a bit goofier, but his friendly rivalry with Sonic remains. Amy has traded in her total fixation on Sonic for being the sensible one of the group… mostly. ...I’m really excited to be writing the series since it’s a very different Sonic than our other books, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe. It’s a more casual read with a focus on comedy and adventure than an on-going action-adventure drama. I think anyone will be able to grab any issue and enjoy themselves." Violetta: Rhythm & Music Coming To 3DS, Wii and DS ![]() Little Orbit, the masters of licensed games and no doubt literally rolling around in mounds of crisp dollar bills during lunch breaks, is taking another IP and pushing it out as a game. This time it's Disney's Violetta, a "tween telenovela" broadcast in Latin America and Europe, which is coming to 3DS, Wii and DS as Violetta: Rhythm and Music. The Wii U clearly isn't groovy enough to handle it. Published by Bandai Namco, it'll hit stores on September 26th, promising rhythm based games around dancing and song writing along with, wait for it, "creative quiz questions". I'm sure it'll be fun for the target audience, but I do have fears of appalling mediocrity — yes, I'm judging a game by its cover. No news on a North American release as, well, the TV show doesn't seem to be broadcast in the region, so this will come to Latin America, Europe and Australasia. If you want to know what it's all about there's an excerpt from the press release and a video below — think Glee, but with a lower budget: "The Violetta TV show tells the story of a musically talented teenager who returns to her hometown of Buenos Aires with her father after living in Europe for several years. There she finds friends, discovers true love and a passion for music as she navigates the trials and tribulations of growing up. Each episode includes original musical numbers from diverse musical genres." There'll be substantial online modes, Super-Secret Bases and a variety of Mega evolutions. Like Pokémon X & Y, it'll also utilise a 3D graphics engine. It's possible that 3DS owners will be a tad blasé about the new visuals when these enhanced remakes come around, as X & Y didn't have such direct points of comparison in terms of characters and environments. Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire do, however, and "YouDontKnowThisUser" has posted a rather cool collection of images that highlights the advances that two generations of portable systems have brought. It emphasizes how different the 3D engine is compared to the GBA's visuals. Check it out below:

I hate alternate comic book covers that make up a single image. I don't want to own 4 editions of the same comic or have I issue with a cover that makes no sense!! |

By bringing Sonic back to TV again, Sega is attempting to increase the popularity of the Sonic franchise in general. In fact, they even got Sony to make a live-action/CGI Sonic movie (however, the release date of the movie has not been announced yet). |
