![]() Most of us have known for a little while that 3DS title Tomodachi Life was being localised, but Nintendo of Europe and Nintendo of America have now released special mini Nintendo Direct broadcasts to not only provide full confirmation, but also to show off the wacky world of this Mii life-sim. This title arrives in both North America and Europe on 6th June, a surprisingly close date and a continuation of Nintendo's recent trend of release date parity between the regions. Already a successful franchise in Japan, Nintendo no doubt hopes that its quirky style and ability to involve the player on a daily basis will translate well in the West. ![]() Below is an excerpt from Nintendo's press release indicating some of what we can expect: " 'Tomodachi' is the Japanese word for 'friend.' After completely customising all your Mii characters (or simply scanning them into the game via QR Code), you’ll recognise them instantly – from their unique vocal traits and appearances right down to their personality quirks. But you can’t possibly predict what they’ll do next. For the first time ever, Mii characters behave based on the personality traits you select, playing out the drama you set in motion. A pop star might fall in love with your lookalike. Your mum might jump on stage to belt out heavy metal songs. Or you could become famous striking poses down the runway of a fashion show wearing cute and silly outfits. Best of all, you can document these unbelievable moments for posterity and share them all with your friends via the Nintendo 3DS Image Share service. The plot of Tomodachi Life thickens with the addition of each character. As they deliver one gripping twist and turn after another, you can reward them with gifts and clothes, their favourite foods or special flourishes for their apartments. Together you can further broaden your Tomodachi Life horizons by expanding a wide variety of facilities on the island, solving characters’ problems and helping them with their needs." You simply must watch the related Nintendo Direct videos to get a sense of what this game is all about! They're a treat, with slight variations depending on the region: Nintendo of America's Tomodachi Life Direct Nintendo of Europe's Tomodachi Life Direct Are you looking forward to this game? THIS WAS THE BEST DIRECT EVER WHERE DID IT EVEN COME FROM OH MY GOSH And I thought the Smash Bros Direct was good! This was just... oh man. It was just the absolute best. I mean, I'm not sure if I'd actually get the game... as I'm STILL playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf - I don't exactly need another life sim. But with the right advertising (to the public, I mean), I really think this game could become a huge hit. I really hope it does - it deserves it. Haha it definitely was very well done and funny but I really don't think the game looks that fun.Seems like the trailer even showed similar interactions multiple times. |

The game looks like a fucked up version of the Sims. The part I like is that you can put your friends/family/game characters in the same world and have them randomly interact with one another. But otherwise, this game is so Japanese, that it's almost unbearable. |

And yet it's being localized! Nintendo has been really been good about localization these days. Not to mention they've been pretty in-touch with their fans, as evidenced by these last few Directs and many of their recent games. It's a pretty great time to be a Nintendo fan! I really hope this game does well. I really feel like it can. |

I don't know. I mean I know some Japanese games sell well here, but this is so overtly Jap, it's likely not to be picked up by the average player. I could see a kid liking the game, but that's assuming a parent is willing to buy a game called "Tomodachi Life". |

This game is a little TOO Japanese for me. And if I was a kid, I wouldn't have picked this game up. |

I think it depends on the age of the kid. Santos' nephew would love this game, and i'm sure he would have a blast using all our Mii's and making us do ridiculous shit. I would love to do that too, but I would only pick this title up if the price was severely reduced. |

Animal Crossing was also too "Japanese", but it still managed to do well. Also, consider the following: the first Animal Crossing game was on the Nintendo 64, and was never localized for North America. Years later, an Animal Crossing came in Japan for Gamecube. The Nintendo localization team had some issues, because the game itself was pretty Japanese. However, they worked their way through and Animal Crossing was received very well here in America, and it has become the amazing franchise it is today. History is sort of repeating itself here now. For the Nintendo DS, there was a game called Tomodachi Collection. That game has never been localized for North America. Here we have Tomodachi Life, a localized version of Tomodachi Collection: New Life that came for 3DS in Japan last year. The Nintendo Localization team is localizing yet another sequel to an unlocalized game. They have been through this before, when localizing Animal Crossing for Gamecube. They did a good job localizing before, and I'm sure they will do a good job localizing again, with their previous knowledge and experience. |

No I don't doubt the localization team working on this game at all, nor do I doubt Nintendo's ability to make a Japanese game work in the US. The difference between Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Life is in the content. Animal Crossing was surly very Japanese, but it has a huge advantage over Tomodachi because the game is overtly cute. Having a cute human character and cute animal villagers made the game approachable to kids as well as adults. Where Tomodachi falters is in the fact that it's just your Mii's doing weird shit, and 80% of that weird shit is very Japanese. They didn't even bother to change the name. The word Tomodachi itself is Japanese, and instantly confusing to anyone who doesn't know what the word means. It doesn't tell you what the game is about. And that, I think, is important for a first title of a series never seen in the US. I'm not dooming it, and I'm sure it will sell well, but I don't think it will take off here. It's kind of how Vocaloid games sell well here, but they are in no way super popular. It's just super Japanese, and the average American doesn't care for that type of weirdness. |

I don't think Japanese words in the title is a problem. Ever heard of Tamagatchi Pets? They are virtual pets that have sold well in any country, regardless of having a Japanese word that most people wouldn't understand. |
