Last week was an interesting week for Nintendo indeed. Sakurai posted a Super Smash Bros. (3DS/Wii U) screenshot, suggesting that there may be a new Kid Icarus-themed stage. As Togeshroob may have told you, Nintendo announced a new "quality of life" strategy for their new products, focusing on non-wearable technology. For a further explanation on this strategy, click here. Here is the Nintendo News Report for this week.

Monster Hunter 4 G Due In Autumn/Fall In Japan This Year

    Posted Image

Capcom has just announced, at Monster Hunter Festa 13, that the 3DS will be receiving an updated version of Monster Hunter 4. It will release in Japan this coming autumn and, most importantly, saves will carry over from the original 3DS game, so professional wyvern-botherers can enjoy all the new content without sacrificing any hard-won equipment.

The trend with the previous entry of this type — Monster Hunter 3 G — was that it became the "Ultimate" games that were localised to Wii U and 3DS. I certaintly hope that, with the success of Monster Hunter 4 in Japan, some form of localisation of this updated version is on the cards.

Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Ace Attorney Box Art Enters The Courtroom

Not so long ago, Capcom and Level-5 announced that Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was coming to Europe this March. On January 27, Nintendo of Europe tweeted/posted a picture of the boxart.

Monochroma Release Delayed on All Platforms

    Posted Image

Last year, Nowhere Studios announced Monochroma, a successfully crowdfunded project that promises much with a 1950s dystopian setting and attractive visuals. A puzzle platformer with four chapters weighing in at around 90 minutes each, it scraped past its target to secure releases on PC, Mac, Linux, PS3 and, most importantly, Wii U.

Developer Nowhere Studios had targeted a December 2013 release on PC et al, with the Wii U version following the PS3 iteration in May this year; as it's now late January and the initially release hasn't happened, clearly that wasn't on the cards. The developer has now published an update on its Kickstarter page to confirm a new target of March for the primary platforms. The Wii U (nor PS3) were mentioned in the post, but studio co-founder Burak Tezateser recently stated the following:

"It is not an official date but I'm expecting the Wii U version to be ready around September along with the PS3 version. We'll see about it. We can't really guess how optimization we need to make for Wii U and PS3."

As is made very clear, this isn't a confirmed, final date, but September is simply a target at this point; this would fall into line with the 4-5 month console delay in place with the original release windows, though with an extra month accounted for. Rather like other crowdfunded titles such as Shovel Knight, backers and interested gamers alike will need to wait a little beyond the original release window

Iwata And Miyamoto Both Take Pay Cuts In Response To Nintendo's Poor Financial Results

    Posted Image

It has been revealed that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata will be taking a 50 percent pay reduction following Nintendo's recent financial results.

He's not the only one taking a cut; legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto will see his wage slashed by 30 percent, as will fellow Nintendo veteran Genyo Takeda. The seven other members of the company's board will each shoulder a 20 percent reduction.

The news comes after Nintendo issued warnings of further financial losses in the future, attributed to the poor commercial performance of the Wii U console. Nintendo expects to make a loss in Q4 of 2014.

Lucario The Aura Warrior Returns To Battle In Super Smash Bros. 3DS & Wii U

    Posted Image

On January 30, Masahiro Sakurai revealed another returning veteran character for Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U. Lucario — the Fighting/Steel type Pokémon who made its debut as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl — will return for the upcoming Nintendo mascot-packed brawler.

Many who feared that Lucario may face the chopping block to make room for other characters will be relieved to see the aura-wielding Pokémon in its furry glory on the official Smash Bros. website.

On Miiverse, Mr. Sakurai had this to say about the return of Lucario:

"The heroic Aura Pokémon, Lucario, joins the battle!! We've increased the influence of Aura this time, so a damaged Lucario is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Lucario joined the battle for the first time in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was released six years ago. The production staff of Brawl worked really hard to expand the character roster--without their efforts, Lucario probably never would have joined the battle."

Not only does Lucario return to Smash Bros., but the well-known Pokémon brings with it revamped Aura attacks.

A Tokyo-Based Business Will Get Your 3DS Running On A TV

    Posted Image

The 3DS is an attractive little portable machine, and following on from its DS predecessors has further established the credentials of a small, dual-screen gaming system. For those that don't like to squint at their games there is the 3DS XL, but there's undeniably a desire for some to be able to hook the handheld up to a TV for a much larger playing area.

A 3DS-TV connection was shown at the Eurogamer Expo StreetPass Zone, in which there were multiplayer events using games such as Mario Kart 7; all of the 3DS systems were hooked up to display the top screen's image on TVs. This was to allow spectators to take in the matches, of course, and on that occasion the equipment was supplied and managed by Nintendo UK.

Sometime during the Eurogamer Expo, Kotaku highlighted a Tokyo-based company called Katsukity that can setup systems to output to a TV. While marketed as capture devices, this particular hardware modification also allows users to display the top screen on a TV, as long as both units are hooked up to a PC / laptop — the images below show it in action.

The company even has a small shop in Tokyo where orders are completed in around an hour. It offers new systems prepared with the modification or, alternatively, can add its circuit board to a customer's existing unit — a brand new 3DS with the technology costs around $361 USD in the store. Naturally the quick process doesn't apply if you can't get to Tokyo, though the company does deal with international postal orders.

Company president Toru Katsuki explained that, to date, there had been no objections to date from Nintendo or Sony — he offers the modification on the DS Lite, DSi, DSXL, 3DSXL and PS Vita, with a 2DS equivalent not far away. He said the following about his business:

"I love Japanese games. But I dislike playing on the DS because it is so small. I wanted to play on a bigger screen.

...The capture card is my creation. […] All others are fakes. They can't make them — the software and the hardware too — no one else can make them.

...When the next 3DS — the next generation — comes out, if we can do it we will make a mod kit for it as well."

While playing the 3DS on a TV may be intriguing, one quirky thing that was noticed during the multiplayer competitions last year was that, despite each player having a TV showing their game, competitors typically stared at the portable anyway. It's also worth making clear that Nintendo offers no official service to output a 3DS or 2DS to a TV, and that applying modifications invalidates the system warranty; yet Nintendo doesn't seem overtly upset about this modification, as Katsukity continues its business with no intervention from the company.

Recently Departed Official Nintendo Magazine Editor Chandra Nair Turns Up At Nintendo UK

    Posted Image

There have been some dramatic changes in the editorial team at Future Publishing's Official Nintendo Magazine recently, with Editor-In-Chief Chandra Nair stepping down and Matthew Castle taking his place at the helm.

Chandra Nair (@ChandraONM) has finally broken the silence regarding his new position on Twitter:

"Just to confirm, I am now working for Nintendo! Certainly never saw that coming when I was spending all my paper round money on SNES imports"

The former ONM bigwig — now employed as Marketing Manager at Nintendo UK — joins a long list of former journalists working for the Japanese gaming giant. Nair began his career at Paragon Publishing in 2001 before joining Future to help relaunch ONM five years later. In 2008 he left to join UK software publisher System 3 as Brand Manager, but would eventually rejoin Future in 2012 to oversee all of the company's Nintendo projects and give ONM another facelift to coincide with the arrival of the Wii U.

Nice write up, as always. Is the PLvsPR title coming out in America as well? Or just Europe?

It's coming to America this year, although a specific release date for America has not yet been announced.

Somehow I really don't care so much about PLvsPW... Nowhere near as much as I care about Azran Legacies, anyway.

Either way, yeah, thanks for the neat write up! I'm expecting there to be a Nintendo Direct this month, so hopefully we'll get some more news here pretty soon!
