Yeah the Wii U isn't all that great. It has great games but the overall concept never stuck to me.
I can't wait to see what nintendo has in store console wise for the future!

    the GameCube did TERRIBLE
Come on, need I say more?
And like EVERYONE I knew had a GC by the end of its life cycle. The same thing happened with the ps3. It sold like shit initally due to its high price but now every gamer has a ps3.

Don't judge a console based on it's initial sales because that shit can always change. That's what shitty companies do, doom a product because not enough people are buying it to suit their "fancy". Well i have held out with nintendo through their good and bad moments and im not going to sit here and act like I know what will happen. Its business and anything can happen.

Either way, It will likely pick up momentum when brawl comes out, that usually happens.

I don't know about you guys, but I really like the Wii U a lot. It's just better for certain types of games rather than others... For example, Assassin's Creed IV was released on Wii U and I actually wasn't aware of that until recently. That just seems like a game that everyone would get on 360, PS3, PS4 and stuff. But Wii U has a lot of great titles, and I have confidence that there will still be a lot of great upcoming titles. But probably nothing big enough to get them out of the sales slump. I don't even think the new Smash Bros will help enough, because its more than likely that people will just choose the get it on 3DS instead.

Also Nintendo doing stuff for Smart Phones? That seems really odd to me. I'm sure it would work out really well, and they could make some great stuff (and it's a very smart move as far as business and sales goes) but it just seems weird to me.

The thing with the PS3 was mostly it's price. All Sony had to do was lower that price, which they did by bringing out the slim models and getting rid of backwards compatibility. It's not the end of the world if there's no backwards compatibility. I'd rather have the lower price, ESPECIALLY if I already own all the other older consoles.

The Gamecube and the N64 didn't do to well, true, but the Sega Genesis didn't do the best either, these consoles all did fine. The Wii U, it's different. Like LK said, I think I also read something about how the Dreamcast did better than the Wii U. The Dreamcast also had quite a few good third party games. It actually had quite a bit, like Soul Calibur and Rayman 2, and I could list more. These games were also all exclusive to the Dreamcast until much later. Rayman 2 had been ported to many consoles in the future. I can't see the Wii U in the future having as many big third party games as the Dreamcast did.

And again, like I said, the Wii only sold what it did because of it's gimmick. New, casual gamers, saw it as a fad and have probably now lost interest in the games that they were playing. Again, the casual games saved it. I think Nintendo's problem started with the N64 and it slowly got worse and worse with each console, except for the Wii, because it was a fad. Now we have reached the Wii U and it's worse than ever. Imagine if the Wii didn't have the casual gamers and it's gimmick, it would have done worse than the Gamecube but slightly better than the Wii U.

Also, if I was Nintendo, I wouldn't have named it the Wii U. I assume that they wanted to keep the Wii name because of how well the Wii did, but they should have at least named it the Wii 2 so that people would know it was a new console. I mean why not? Sony uses the number for each console.

The difference between SEGA's DreamCast and the Wii U is that SEGA did what Sony initially did with the PS3 - put out a more powerful system with a high price. The support didn't matter - SEGA was eating the cost of the Dreamcast, as Sony did. But unlike Sony, SEGA had nothing to fall back on. Sony was, and still is, a Mega company with multiple entertainment lines, so they could eat the cost and still stay up. SEGA had a failed handheld and a softened grip on their own market - it was inevitable. The Dreamcast COULD have kept on going, but the plug was pulled because SEGA simply couldn't keep up with the cost in the end.

Unlike SEGA, Nintendo has an undeniable grip in each market it participates in, and while the console itself is doing poorly, it's hardly a doomsday plug. We had a VERY similar conversation with the 3DS more than a year after it's launch when it was doing poorly, and with the Wii when the 360 and PS3 initially started to catch up in it's mid-life sales. The Wii's numbers wasn't because it was a "fad" - it literally ushered in a slew of gamers that would have likely never touched a gaming console in their life because of it's intuitive technology and emphasis on useability. (i.e, pick up and play, no strings attached.) That market would've remained untouched.

Saying "it was xyz" who saved it doesn't say much, either. "Saved"? It sold well because it was a gaming console. That's like saying "it was FPS fans who saved the 360" - neither console was ever "failing." Casual gamers made up a large portion of the market, definitely, but saying they "saved" the console makes no sense because there was nothing to save.

The Dreamcast comparison was used for the PS3, the 3DS, and for a while, the PSP. NONE of those consoles are in the Dreamcast's position, and neither is the WiiU. "Saving" the console is unnecessary because it doesn't need to be "saved." It's a 6-10 year console with a poor first year. So long as Nintendo rolls out solid games and keeps up with their promises, I don't see it being canceled any time soon. To be fair, there's likely more that they could be doing, and I'm sure there's stuff in the works, but doomsday sayers come and go everytime this happens.

I'll be more worried if Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Zelda don't sell well. THEN I'll be worried. Until then, I'd rather wait than get caught up in the analyst smashing that comes around this time of year.

I'm not really worried about anything Nintendo is doing because I want them to ditch the Wii U. If MK8, Smash, and Zelda don't sell well, I wouldn't necessarily be worried, it would only mean we wouldn't have to worry about buying these crappy Nintendo consoles anymore to play our favourite Nintendo franchises. I don't see anything particularly worrying about that, myself.

@Ice: I still think that the Wii U is doing worse than the 3DS. The 3DS has third party games and lot's of them to keep it going and going. Also, the Vita isn't doing so good and it has no games, which also keeps the 3DS going. I wasn't worried about the 3DS when everybody had said it wasn't doing well. The Wii U, it looks bad.....but like I said, you never know. I don't think the Wii U will be canceled, it will probably last it's life span, but as far as having another console after the Wii U, I don't think Nintendo will be able to pull it off. It depends where consoles go next gen, though.

You said that you'd be worried if Smash Bro., Mario Kart, etc. don't sell well. They might not. Mario 3D World, it didn't sell like it should have, did it? It didn't sell as well as the previous 3D Mario games. Mario Kart will be the big seller. If Mario Kart doesn't sell well, be worried. It might NOT sell well. There's a lot of casual players who played the Wii that don't play games anymore. The Wii WAS seen as a fad by a lot of people. Do you know how many women I know who saw it this way and who now won't even pick up a casual game anymore?

And, I actually do kinda agree with LK's last post, lol. I always have to buy a Nintendo console just for Nintendo's games. It actually would be kinda nice if Nintendo's games were on Sony's or Microsoft's console. Specifically Sony's. At the same time, though, I'd hate to see Nintendo without a main console. I grew up with Nintendo always having a main console, I really don't want to see that go.

Yeah I remember reading that Super Mario 3D World is one of the lowest selling Mario games, ever.

Nintendo would sooner take their first party series to the grave with them over putting them on other consoles.

    @Mario sales
Uhhh....well seeing as there's only 5 million consoles out there, that's relatively obivious. It's still more than succeesful - it's passed it's sale threshold and sold over 1 million copies.

And no one is comparing the 3DS' current standing to the WiiU's current standing - we were talking about it's first year compared to the WiiU's first year, and it is, in fact, very similar. As is the news, and all of the "Nintendo is doomed" and the "Nintendo should just sell off" comments. Hell, Iwata is pretty much repeating what he said with the 3DS - right down to taking a pay cut. It's quite literally JUST like the 3DS back in 2011.

I can't see them abandoning the console market, just like I couldn't see them ditching the handheld market back in 2011. "It's under powered, not worth the money, has no games, Nintendo should just sell" - sounds just like the 3DS, and even the Wii. So yeah I'll actually just wait, because I'm not a tried and tested million dollar company, nor a proper internal analyst.

As for their first parties - yeahhhh, that's not happening. Nintendo makes more than enough money in it's merchandise subsidiaries to keep it afloat - they'd sooner go back to making toys and cards based on their IP's before handing over their patent portfolio. It makes NO sense from any form of business model nor perspective. At least, not over here. I don't know much about Asian B/EModels, but you'll see Nintendo slingshots before you see a Zelda on the Xbox.

(Temporarily closed. ...Gwaargh!) *doo wee doo wee doo*

    Wait -

Mario 3D World has broken 1 million copies sold.
Zelda: The Wind Waker HD has broken 1 million copies sold.
There have only been a little over 5 million WiiU consoles sold.

That means that BOTH 3D World and Wind Waker have had a rough 1/5 adoption rate. That's actually pretty darn neat!

Also 3D World released on a 5mil install base console on the same day as the Xone and a few weeks after the PS4. I'd say it performed pretty well, all things considered. Still, if the WiiU picks up, hopefully 3D World will pick up more as well - everyone needs to play this game, heh.

But yeah, I expect the WiiU to pick up some degree of steam in the coming year or two, and although it seems unlikely that it will become a HUGE success, it will more than likely be an overall profitable venture for Nintendo in the end. 'Course, they probably would like it to be MORE profitable, hence all the changes and whatnot.

lol. I thought this was funny.

@Ice and comparing the 3DS's first year to the Wii U's first year:

With the 3DS, we knew that third party games were going to be on it right away, though. We also knew that it was going to continue to have third party support in the years to come. We also knew that it would do better than Sony's handheld. The Wii U's not going to have many third party games, at all. Weren't there some multiplat games canceled for the Wii U? I can see developers backing out of putting their games on the Wii U and putting them only on the PS4 and the Xbox One. Who knows, though.

But anyways, I've said this before, but I think that lately Nintendo has been putting most of their effort into their handhelds instead of their consoles. This has NOT helped the Wii or the Wii U. I thought so last gen, as well. For one thing, 3D World (the console version) should have been released before the handheld version. 3D World was fine being released when it was, on the Wii U, but 3D Land should have only been released sometime AFTER 3D World. 3D World would have been more "new" and "special" then. We saw 3D Land first which made 3D World seem like nothing new and less amazing. The handheld version of any game used to ALWAYS be released AFTER the console one and for good reason.

Another thing is, some of these handheld games should have been on the main console. Luigi's Mansion 2 is an example. Why is it on the handheld? The first game was on the main console! Luigi's Mansion's 2 should have been on the main console. Kid Icarus is another one. I don't see Uprising as "main console quality" but at first Nintendo was going to make a big Kid Icarus game on the Wii and then suddenly we hear that it's a smaller handheld game! Also, Animal Crossing on the 3DS. People are saying that there won't be a Wii U one. Wasn't Animal Crossing usually on the big main console? If they do make an Animal Crossing for the Wii U, as well, then it should have been released before the 3DS one.

I'm assuming that Nintendo's really focusing on their handhelds because of how well they do, but focusing on the main console should always come first. ESPECIALLY, if the handheld has third party support and the main console doesn't.

But yeah, if some of their handheld games were released on the main console instead, it would have at least helped the main console out.
