    WELL SO
Nintendo had its big unveiling of its new business plans and whatnot! They are making a lot of significant changes, both in mindset and practice, while maintaining a lot of their traditional ideas. I'll outline a few of them here, and provide links and stuff if y'all want more details and you haven't already seen it.

Since there's a lot of info I've put it into related spoiler tabs. ALSO take note that it's not clear when any of this will actually take place, as most of this is planning/philosophy/future outlook, but it's here nonetheless.

    OH YEAH
I totally forgot to put that up there! I'll stick that in on the end, thanks.

I still think that's a totally bizarre thing to announce (I mean, what about Gamecube...?), but hey, ANYTHING related to the VC having a future is good news.

Not to mention that they said, quite some time ago (so it may not even be valid anymore), that GBA was coming to WiiU VC - another kind of bizarre thing.

    IWATA'S MISSION
IWATA'S MISSION AND QUALITY OF LIFE

I've never understood why developers are so open now with how bad their company is doing (like Square Enix) or how bad their products are doing. I don't think it's a good idea to admit to the public that their product isn't doing well. Have any of you read up on Square Enix? Sometimes they say the stupest things that could destroy the company and these things don't NEED to be said. Nintendo isn't as bad as Square Enix, or some other companies, but still. There was also this one interview with Capcom about Resident Evil that could have destroyed the series. When you hear these developers admit their own products are bad or trash talk their own products it really does sometimes make you NOT want to buy the product. ESPECIALLY if you're not someone who grew up playing these games or consoles and you're new to the series/console.

Back in the day you didn't hear about these kinds of things (developers trash talking their own games, admitting their games were bad.) It's probably because there was no internet back then, but still, you didn't hear it in magazines or anything, though.

This is one of the reasons I didn't buy Resident Evil 6. The developers did this with this game. If they hadn't, I probably would have bought Resident Evil 6 and I probably would have enjoyed it. I can't bring myself to buy it because of the bad things the developers have said about it, their OWN game. It's one thing when other gamers trash talk games, but when the developer who made the game talks badly about their own game, that's stupid on their part.

Also, just so you know, developers admitting that their products are doing poorly or admitting the mess it was to develop a game or actually trash talking their own games is different than a developer just simply talking about what they can improve on in their games when it comes to developing the next game in the series. These are two different things.

But he's not trashing the WiiU or any games - he doesn't say anything about them being bad ideas or poorly developed - he's just pointing out that it hasn't sold as well as they wished. He's pointing out reality and telling us what he's going to do to fix it in the long term. If he just ignored all the problems and pretended like everything was okay, it would probably be bad not only for image but for the company itself in the long run.

It's a different scenario than Capcom trashing RE6 (which I don't know anything about - they really did this?).

Well, I don't think you can just refuse to share information about the financial performance of your company, especially considering you have shareholders and investors who will want to know this stuff. In any case, the data would be out there and people would be able to draw conclusions from it whether you admitted to it or not.

So in light of this news, what do you guys think Nintendo should do? It looks like they've failed to retain the audience they gained with the Wii, which is no surprise considering the nature of that audience and the relatively incoherent marketing of the Wii U. At the same time, just making a Gamecube 2 type thing to directly compete with the other consoles probably won't work either. Finally, branching out to other platforms would be suicidal for the hardware side of the business.

The position I've found myself in for a long while is that while I really enjoy the games, I just can't justify spending money on the hardware. Then again, I'm a shameless cheapskate.

    @kj
Oh, alrighty, I guess that's a nice little bit of confirmation NOT from the horse's mouth. He seems to be referring to the 3DS, though, which is interesting seeing as last we heard they planned on the WiiU. Ah, whatever, we'll see soon enough.

    @Katz
Yeah, they've pretty much acknowledged here that they really can't expect to, like you said, build a "Gamecube 2" and chase after the others, and at the same time they've also said they won't be branching out to other hardware (aside from some kind of minimal smartphone work designed to call attention back to Nintendo hardware.)

Here's a good little recap/overview of Nintendo's philosophy about all of this:

    http://www.gamnesia.com/articles/nintendos-true-message-about-the-future

I think we'll be hearing a lot more about the specifics of these changes relatively soon - particularly the health and quality of life thing. Probably at E3. Though maybe not because it seems like they really wanna keep focus on the WiiU for awhile longer.

He's pointing out reality and telling us what he's going to do to fix it in the long term. If he just ignored all the problems and pretended like everything was okay, it would probably be bad not only for image but for the company itself in the long run.

It doesn't have to be actual trashing. I also said that Nintendo isn't as bad as some other companies. Square Enix is very bad. Square Enix is killing themselves in so many ways it's not even funny. And like what Katz said in her post, it's true that word of any problems WILL get out, but it's not as bad when it's OTHER people spreading the word.

    And, you said:

"He's pointing out reality and telling us what he's going to do to fix it in the long term. If he just ignored all the problems and pretended like everything was okay, it would probably be bad not only for image but for the company itself in the long run."

Pointing it out and telling us how they're going to fix the problem? That should stay within the company. Why does any company have to tell it's fans this? They sell the product, they advertise it, it's a good product, we buy it. Why are they supposed to openly tell their fans about the problems and how they're going to fix it? Also, how is NOT telling us all this "ignoring" the problem? Like I said, back in the day? You didn't see this. If we had, the Sega Genesis wouldn't have sold as much as it did. Everyone knew back then that the Genesis didn't sell as much as the SNES, but a lot of people still bought it over the SNES. In today's times? The Genesis would have been put down all the time in comparison to the SNES, even by Sega themselves, even if was just small things. Regardless, it wouldn't have been good.

It's one thing for developers to be close to there fans with stuff like listening to their complaints, reading their emails, etc. but they shouldn't go around broadcasting the company's problems.

And again, Katz is right about things getting out because of the internet and all, things WILL get out because companies have to share information, but it does NOT help when the company themselves bring it out to their fans/customers.

I also want to say that if it's something like, for example the red ring of death, that IS something that we should know and we DO need to know that it's going to be fixed. It's not fair for us to buy a faulty product. Something like how poor the Wii U is selling? That's not something we need to know. Even if the Wii U is selling poorly, it's still a good console with good games, even if it's not the console that everybody wants.

And like with the Genesis, we all know that the Wii U is not selling as well as the other consoles, and that it's not selling as well as it should be, but Nintendo admitting it, it's like they're putting down the console.

I think Nintendo should stop worrying about making home consoles altogether and release their stuff on other consoles. I would love to see a Zelda game on the Xbox One and PS4. Or a Super Mario Galaxy-like game. They could still focus on the 3DS and future handheld devices, but the WiiU is a flop and it's not going anywhere, either.

With that said, it would be weird to see Nintendo without a console, but honestly, I rarely use them anymore. Sure, I play the Marios and the Zeldas and the Metroids, but... that's really it.

Also, what's the deal with releasing DS virtual console games on Wii U? Why not, you know, the 3DS instead? It makes no sense to me.

Because it promotes the double screen usage, and also introduces the concept to newer players. It makes total sense from a human experience point of view. The 3DS plays DS games naturally - while digital would be cool for the sake of convenience, it makes more sense to put it on a platform that can't play it naturally, but has the same input style. I'm sure that's what they are betting on, and it makes sense.

I don't think they should leave the console market. It's not the first, nor the last time they've been in a rut. And cutting projections for a fiscal year that ends in 2 months is a huge no brainer. (The projections were for March, right?) Either way, if Mario Kart, Smash, and Zelda come out and the WiiU still is selling bad, THEN I'll be a little more worried. Until then, Nah.

Do you think those games will change the Wii U's current situation, though? I believe Mario Kart will help a bit but... I can't see those games pushing people over the edge to finally pick one up. Plus Zelda is probably pretty far off. I doubt we'll see it for quite some time.

I don't know if all those games could help the Wii U that much....

If Zelda DOES help the Wii U, the game will have to be really good, like when OOT was released, not like when Skyward Sword was released.

    I don't know.

The Wii U might be fine later in it's lifespan but I can tell you right now that Nintendo might not be able to pull off another console after the Wii U. But you never know, they might think of some new gimmick that will sell. That's what sold the Wii, it wasn't Nintendo's games. Also, casual games helped the Wii.

I totally think they could pull off another console. The N64 didn't do too well, and the GameCube did TERRIBLE compared to..well, most standards. Then they went and smashed with the Wii. So, yeah, I do think its possible. I think it'll take something like the Wii to do it - and the WiiU isn'tddoing what the Wii did, but I think its possible.

As for "saving" the WiiU. To be honest, no, on its own, Smash won't. But I do think the combination of Smash, MK, and the announcement of Zelda will lead to a better outlook. It'll be more incentive to buy a console that lacks incentive, and thats really what the WiiU needs - incentive.

The thing is, though: the Wii U isn't just selling badly, it's selling really, REALLY badly. I'm sure I read somewhere that the Dreamcast sold more than Wii U has in its first year. The Wii U has only sold 5 million consoles (or something really low like that), and if you compare that to the Xbox One and PS4, which have sold 4 million units each already (they've only been out for about 3 months!) than that's a bad sign of things to come.

And in my opinion: no, I don't think those three games will "save" the Wii U. It's already done. The message was too confusing to consumers to begin with, and Nintendo isn't doing anything to educate people on what the Wii U is and why people would want it. I don't think, "it plays the Marios and the Zeldas!" doesn't cut it anymore. Even 3rd party games have basically stopped outright. I remember reading a rumor that Ubisoft was going to straight-up cancel the Wii U version of Watch Dogs because they don't think it will sell (and, to be honest, it'll probably move 50K units at best).
