2013 was a wonderful year for Nintendo! It was the year of Luigi, so we had awesome games like Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, New Super Luigi U, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. For Wii U, we got Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, NES Remix, and Super Mario 3D World. For 3DS, we had Pokemon X/Y, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and Mario Party: Island Tour. There were many other good games for Wii U and 3DS.
Now, it is 2014. Here is a list of upcoming games this year:

    Wii U 2014 Games

    Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

    Posted Image

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze continues on from the side-scrolling platform gameplay of the Donkey Kong Country series and sees Donkey Kong and his friends travelling through six different islands in order to defeat the Snomads. Like the previous game, players primarily control Donkey Kong who is assisted by a companion, who either provide additional abilities to Donkey Kong, or can be controlled individually by a second player. Along with Diddy Kong, who returns with his barrel jetpack for crossing large gaps, two additional characters are added; Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong. Dixie has the ability to spin her ponytail into a propeller and slowly descend through the air, with an initial boost in height at the start, allowing her and Donkey Kong to fly up out-of-reach platforms or items. Cranky, in a similar mechanic to the DuckTales video game, can use his cane to bounce on dangerous surfaces such as spiky thorns and reach higher areas and defeat certain enemies the other Kongs cannot. In addition, Cranky's previous game role as the shopkeeper is taken over by Funky Kong.

    Mario Kart 8

    Posted Image

Mario Kart 8 continues the traditional gameplay of the franchise, in which characters from the Mario universe race against each other in go-karts, attempting to hinder their opponents or improve their racing performance using various tools found in item boxes. Returning features from previous installments include motorbikes and 12-player racing from Mario Kart Wii, and hangliders and underwater racing from Mario Kart 7. New to this series is a focus on anti-gravity sections, allowing racers to drive on walls and ceilings. The game will feature local and online multiplayer modes for up to twelve racers. A new feature, called Mario Kart TV, allows players to use Miiverse to share clips from their races. The game will be compatible with the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Wii U Pro Controller, and the Wii Wheel. The game runs at 60 frames per second, even in two player, and Nintendo is aiming to push it to four players.

    Hyrule Warriors

    Posted Image

Hyrule Warriors is very similar to Tecmo Koei's Dynasty Warriors series of video games, but instead using the setting and characters from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series. The player controls Link, most closely resembling his Skyward Sword iteration, in melee combat to take on large numbers of enemies from the Legend of Zelda series. While there will be a far stronger emphasis on combat than other games in the Legend of Zelda series, the player will still use common weapons from prior games in the series, such as a sword, bombs, and Link's signature spin attack. Obtaining items through discovering and opening chests will be retained as well.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

    Posted Image

Like previous games in the series, Super Smash Bros. is a competitive fighting game in which up to four players from various Nintendo games fight against each other. Players use a variety of attacks to damage their opponent, increasing their damage percentage which makes them easier to knock out of the playing field. Smash Balls, first introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, make a return, allowing whoever obtains them to perform extremely powerful attacks. Trophies also were confirmed to be returning. The game is presented in high-definition visuals on Wii U. The Wii U version of this new installment will contain the same amount of playable characters as the 3DS version, but feature exclusive stages. The Wii U version will have more stages and trophies designed after those in home console releases. Several assist trophies, a returning feature from Brawl, have been revealed on Nintendo's social network, Miiverse, including Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and a French Bulldog from Nintendogs.

    X

    Posted Image

In a similar fashion to its predecessor, Xenoblade Chronicles, X plays as an open world role-playing video game, with an emphasis on exploration. Traveling can take place on foot, or in large humanoid robots, mecha, approximately four times the size of the average playable character, called "Dolls", that the player may opt to control. The Dolls have the ability to fly, traverse water, and transform into vehicles such as motorcycles or tanks. Aerial battles will also take place in the game.

    Bayonetta 2

    Posted Image

This game was supposed to be released last year, and it ultimately didn't make it; in fact, we're yet to have a solid release window. Once a date is confirmed we're likely to see hype ramp up again, and we'll see whether it will have much selling power as an exclusive on the Wii U. Its original announcement certainly caused controversy and prompted some to say they'd contemplate buying a Wii U for that game alone — what we do know is that it looks promising, based on the demo builds that have done the rounds. I'd love to see a deal for a budget port of its predecessor, too...

    Third-party Wii U Games 2014

    Watch_Dogs

    Posted Image

This was supposedly releasing last year, but potential issues were highlighted as release approached and, at late Summer 2013 events such as the Eurogamer Expo, limited demo footage looked a tad underwhelming. The launch of the behemoth open-world title Grand Theft Auto V also didn't help, and Ubisoft delayed the release in order to improve and polish the end result. I'm still intrigued by the ambitious concept of an open, hackable world with seamless real-time online interactions, and I hope the end result delivers on Wii U.

    Project CARS

    Posted Image

This ambitious driving title has seen some delays, with Q3 this year the new target; Slightly Mad Studios recently dropped Xbox 360 and PS3 in favour of the One and PS4, but has retained its Wii U release. The studio has continually talked up the Wii U's ability to deliver a strong version of the game, and with so few driving titles on the system this could certainly be one to watch.

Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails

    Posted Image

Originally expected in late 2013, this Wii U eShop exclusive from Dakko Dakko has been pushed back as we await word on a new target release. This is an on-rails shooter in a very literal sense, as you navigate around fixed rails to rescue cats and destroy enemies. Demo builds have certainly been encouraging, with GamePad-centric gameplay a prominent part of the experience.

    FAST Racing NEO

    Posted Image

Shin'en Multimedia certainly has its fans among Nintendo Download enthusiasts, and FAST - Racing League was a stand-out on WiiWare. Confirmation of a sequel on the Wii U eShop certainly has plenty looking ahead optimistically, and it may give us our fast futuristic racing fix; it's not like Nintendo's given us a new F-Zero to enjoy...

    3DS 2014 Games

    Kirby: Triple Deluxe

    Posted Image

If one game character represents the irreverent, playful whimsy of which Nintendo is so proud it may well be Kirby. The pink ball and his world have their own crazy logic, as you go around absorbing power-ups and generally being charmed silly by the visuals and music. This is due imminently in Japan, so I'm simply awaiting localisation; footage to date has shown fun mini-games and multi-layered levels to take advantage of the portable's stereoscopic 3D effect.

    Yoshi's New Island

    Posted Image

Let me be honest. I was unimpressed with this game when I first saw it, as it was lacking in both polish and creative spark. Yet still, I have learned from experience that impressions of early builds certainly don't tell anything like the full story, so I'll take heart from the most recent footage and hope that this delivers a strong new entry in the Yoshi spin-off series. Expect an attractive yet probably divisive hand-drawn style and lots of egg throwing; here's hoping for an enjoyable end result.

    Super Smash Bros. For 3DS

    Posted Image

The 3DS version represents the first portable entry in the franchise. Since this game was announced, fans have yet to learn what, if any, interaction will be possible between the two iterations — cross-play seems unlikely due to alternate stages, but we can dream — yet we know for sure that the portable's version will be unique from its HD brethren. It'll have a rather different art-style, for one thing, and my be preferable with its bold colours and black outlines, and will possibly cause nostalgia overload with some of its unique stage settings. It'll be Smash Bros. on the go, which is a hugely exciting prospect.

    Mario Golf: World Tour

    Posted Image

Originally pegged for late 2013, this was pushed back potentially for extended development, or perhaps to flesh out 2014's lineup. Whatever the case, and despite a little bit of an absence of recent footage, this may be on some wishlists for those that remember the RPG-lite Mario sports games of years gone by. This is being developed by Camelot and will include online play and communities, so is full of promise.

    Bravely Default

    Posted Image

Bravely Default came out in Europe in December. It hits North America soon, including a gorgeous limited edition boxed set, and is a polished, beautifully constructed RPG; a sequel is already well on its way to Japan, too.

    Pokémon Bank

    Posted Image

The main feature of Pokémon Bank is the possibility of players depositing up to 3000 Pokémon from the games in an online cloud. The referred cloud will work as a PC, and will have 100 Boxes capable of carrying, like in a normal PC, 30 Pokémon each. Boxes can also be categorized into groups (with a maximum of 10 groups), and the player can customize the name of each group. The service will feature extensive search options and filters, allowing the player to locate deposited Pokémon. Pokémon from Generation V can be transferred to the service individually, or entire Boxes can be transferred at once.

Brigette (the host of Pokémon Box Ruby and Sapphire) maintains the Pokémon Bank service. She gives the player 100 Poké Miles when Pokémon are deposited into Pokémon Bank, although the player can also opt to receive rewards in the form of Battle Points instead. Poké Miles are awarded for the length of time that a given Pokémon is deposited into Pokémon Bank. The amount of Poké Miles earned by the player increases if more Pokémon are deposited into Pokémon Bank. Both Poké Miles and Battle Points are sent to Pokémon X and Y using the in-game option called Pokémon Link.

Pokémon that are holding Berries or other items cannot be deposited into Pokémon Bank, and it is advised to return any held items to the Bag prior to depositing Pokémon. If the player attempts to deposit Pokémon that are holding Berries or other items, the items will be removed and sent to the player's Bag. Items held by Pokémon being deposited into Pokémon Bank will disappear if the player's bag is full.

Pokémon that evolve via trading will not evolve if sent to Pokémon Bank.

Any number of physical or digital copies of Pokémon X and Y can be used in conjunction with the service. Pokémon Bank can be utilized at any point after the player obtains the Pokédex in Pokémon X and Y. The service cannot be used if a new game in Pokémon X and Y has not been started. If a player owns multiple copies of Pokémon Bank on different Nintendo 3DS systems, Pokémon cannot be transferred between those Pokémon Banks.

Pokémon Bank accounts are tied to the user's Nintendo Network ID, which cannot be used across multiple Nintendo 3DS systems. While Pokémon X and Y are region-locked themselves, Pokémon Bank can still communicate with an XY Game Card of any region when it is inserted into a Nintendo 3DS, although Nintendo does not make any guarantee for the performance of software or systems in the Nintendo 3DS family when used outside of their intended regions.

When Pokémon Bank (along with Poké Transporter) is downloaded, any restrictions on the Nintendo 3DS system for Shopping Services need to be removed within the Parental Controls before Pokémon Bank can be utilized. Any restrictions set in place pertaining to usage of the Nintendo 3DS's Internet browser also require removal each time that the Pokémon Bank software is used.

After the expiration of the aforementioned trial period, Pokémon in Pokémon Bank can still be withdrawn (without an annual pass) for a set period of time before the Pokémon are lost.

Honestly, the only things I care about enough to purchase are Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, and Smash Bros. Hyrule Warriors to a lesser extent.

But still, it seems they have a pretty strong line-up again this year! Maybe not QUITE as power-packed as 2013, but solid nonetheless - especially for the WiiU.

I'm pretty excited for a lot of these games. Some more than others, but excited nonetheless.
New Smash Bros, Tropical Freeze, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, and while it wasn't talked about, just mentioned on the list of Wii U games, I am really looking forward to the game Shovel Knight.
It takes elements of old school Castlevania and DuckTales. So I'm down with that.
