Retro had been deciding on whether to make another Donkey Kong game or another Metroid game and decided to go with Donkey Kong because they had unfinished business with Donkey Kong. Edited by Pyroll7, Jun 11 2013, 09:07 PM.

Nah, I disagree on a lot of those points. I don't think they're losing their "passion" at all - and certainly not simply because they're creating a game that has a significantly smaller scope than the previous game (as, like y'all said, 3D World is no Galaxy). Y'all played 3D Land; y'all know how fantastic a platformer it is. It's nothing to 'wow' at with graphics or story or world design or anything, but it is some of the very best platforming you will ever see in a Mario game, and I'm certain 3D world will be the same - probably better. Am I disappointed it's not on the scale of Galaxy? Yes, of course - Galaxy is probably my 1st or 2nd favorite game. But that's not making me think Nintendo is losing something. Of course seeing something big and flashy like a Mario Galaxy reveal is very exciting, but that doesn't mean it's any better than a more simplistic, not-so-grand-scale Mario game like 3D World. I'm almost glad they aren't trying to go crazy and "out-do" themselves. I mean, where do you go after space? And so you know, Skyward Sword was not revealed with that piece of art. That art was accidentally leaked - it was never meant for the public and obviously didn't really accurately portray the final game. Skyward Sword was officially revealed a year later, and honestly, the hype for the piece of art was WAY higher than the hype for the actual reveal trailer. @Donkey Kong Country Yeah, I hear DKCR has been Retro's most successful game to date - and I can believe it. A sequel really makes sense (not to mention it looks really really good :o). I secretly wish it was called "Donkey Kong Country Returns Again," though :p Edited by Togeshroob, Jun 11 2013, 11:41 PM.

Hard to believe the 3ds' library has been this slow as far as decent games go. |

I don't remember what the average has been in the past, but Nintendo had an infograph up earlier that showed how many titles they've released this year (and a few years prior) and how much they've sold, etc. This year they've hit record sales with Fire Emblem, Virtue's Last Reward, the slue of eShop titles, Mario titles, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, some other racing game, a few indie games, and of course now, Animal Crossing. |

It did. The numbers next to the month are the month number. June is the 6th month. The little numbers next to the country are the actual dates. If you look on AC you will see that in the US it says 6.9/June 9th. |

I am suddenly extremely excited for A Link Between Worlds. That sounds like the perfect continuation of one of the very best Zelda games. I'm also very interested in what they do with the story. The fact that it comes out this November is even better. |

No the artwork was shown to the public and they had planned to show it because people kept asking if there was going to be a new Zelda because nothing was said about a new Zelda for so long. It might have been leaked first but they did show it to the public right after and intended to. I remember this perfectly. I still think that Skyward Sword was a last minute thing. Not literally last minute but you know what I mean. I had the feeling they weren't even planning to make a new Zelda console game for the Wii but people begged for one. I just found something odd about the whole thing. At times I think that they were going to skip Zelda on the Wii, kinda like how the N64 didn't have a Metroid game. It's almost as if they weren't going to make a Zelda game every gen anymore? Like they were going to make a Zelda game when they felt like it instead of it being a mandatory thing....I don't know. But I do thing Nintendo is losing passion when it comes to the console games. It's almost like Nintendo is more interested in making handheld games. This isn't necessarily regarding Nintendo but a Japanese developer, I forget who, had said that a lot of Japanese developers don't have the passion anymore that they once had when developing games. They do it because it's their job and not because they enjoy making games. This person had also said that that's not the case when it comes to North American developers. Anyways, I also wanted to say that Super Mario 3D Land was called this because of the 3DS's 3D, so it's kinda funny that the Wii U one is called Super Mario 3D World. It's good that the 3D part of the name still fits because the game is a 3D game. I think if the console one was released before the handheld one the console one would have had people a little bit more excited. But we have already seen Mario 3D Land. See, usually if a console game and a handheld game are somewhat similar the console one comes out first and then the handheld one. |

No, Togeshroob is absolutely right - the artwork was leaked from a round table discussion, and once it was out, Nintendo came out with the art in high resolution.
The reason Nintendo came out with the artwork publicly was because the artwork was leaked in very low resolution (we're talking camera quality, versus the over 4000 pixel, 320 dpi scan that Nintendo gave us) - Nintendo didn't plan on showing anything to the public until next year, similar to what they did with Phantom Hourglass. And far from that last bit - Nintendo came out multiple times in both 2008 and 2009, before the leak, stating that both handheld titles and a main console title were in the works. Anouma even said that they rarely AREN'T working on a console Zelda title. Also, I'd hardly call Skyward Sword last minute - the game started development in 2007, reconfirmed in 2008, and the artwork was leaked in 2009. Nintendo's even said that the game took the longest to make - even longer than Twilight Princess. So "last minute" is the LAST thing I'd call Skyward Sword. And on the contrary - I think Nintendo is one of the few Japanese developers left with passion. The person you're talking about is Hideo Kojima - the creator of Metal Gear Solid. He said that developers were "lacking motivation" because Japanese players were losing "passion." His quote reads:
He's tired of taking care of his own people - his own culture who lack the passion. Which I definitely don't agree with - and neither does half of Japanese publishers, but to each his own. Either way, to say that Nintendo - who's sole customer base is formed from software and hardware, as opposed to say, Sony's, is losing "passion" is odd. Their games have never been better, and neither have their sales. Hell, if Twilight Princess took 8 years to make, Nintendo's said Skyward Sword had the longest development process. Working on that many games of such a caliber for that long - that's pretty much the definition of passion in the development world. |

Not all NA developers have passion. Maybe for money, but not for games. The two COD developers have each been pushing out passionless titles every two years rehashing the same models/textures/ and guns with few editions. Not to mention the EA sports yearly ballfest. Regardless of the country you are in, there will be developers with minds on money instead of caring about their games quality. If people pay for it, they don't care to make it the best it can be. I think that is what sets the core first party Nintendo titles apart from other developers. Nintendo doesn't just push out a new Mario 3D title every year with no regard to quality simply because people will pay for it. No, they take their time, and even push release dates back, just so they can make sure the games they release are to their standards. This is a symbol of care and devotion to a video game; Passion. |

Well, Infinity Ward pushed out perfectly good titles, anyway. This was before the yearly schedule and before Treyarch decided to gently buttfuck the franchise. Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4 were fantastic games. |

What the fuck is Hideo Kojima's deal? That guy is like the most pessimistic person in videogames. Whenever I hear a quote of his or mention of him in an article, all I can think is "Oh geez, what type of shit is he going to talk about his own field now.." Was he like the oldest son in his family and coerced into his father's career or what? |

You know, I was thinking about it, and I think it kind of makes sense that Retro didn't do another Metroid title. After doing 3 (4 if you count the Collection and work put into Hunters), it's no wonder they wanted a break. I mean, I personally would've asked for a different title, but TF does look good. Here's hoping their next title isn't a platformer, though. |
