SEGA Promises New Gameplay, Enemies and Potentially "Friends" in Sonic Lost World

    Posted Image

Since its announcement in the last Nintendo Direct, little has been said since about Sonic Lost World, which is one third of an exclusive worldwide deal for the mascot between SEGA and Nintendo. It's a new main series Sonic title coming to Wii U and 3DS, which may be enough for some long term fans for the time being.

While not exactly heavy with details, John Cheng — President and Chief Financial Officer of Sega of America Inc — has been quoted by the Associated Press to confirm that the title isn't any form of retread of existing games, but that it's being produced to feature new ideas for the franchise:

"With 'Sonic Lost World,' we're going to introduce new gameplay and enemies, which is always fun. In terms of Sonic and his friends, he'll have his same friends there, and I think there'll be some new ones as well. It's not a reiteration. It's going to be all new."

Sonic has a lot of friends thanks to SEGA enthusiasm in recent times for expanding the blue one's roster, but this does potentially shatter hopes from the concept art that this would focus on Sonic and Tails. To take an optimist's approach, perhaps SEGA will strike the right balance.

Cheng also stated, briefly, his belief that Sonic can be a powerful exclusive for Nintendo's systems, while repeating a phrase that's often heard in the games industry:

"It should be a win-win situation. Don't count Nintendo out."

Shantae Coming to the eShop June 20

    Posted Image

WayForward has confirmed through their official blog that Shantae is coming to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console on June 20. In anticipation of the release, new box art has also been revealed for the game.

Unlike the original Shantae released for the Game Boy Color, which only released in North America, players in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand will also have the chance to download the critically acclaimed game.

Shantae and the Pirates Curse for the 3DS eShop, the third game in Shantae’s series, still lacks an official release date, but is expected later this year. Previously, WayForward had released Shantae: Risky’s Revenge for the Nintendo DSi in 2010, which was well received.

Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara Hits Wii U June 18

Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara will be releasing on the Wii U eShop June 18, priced at $14.99. Originally announced at PAX East this year, it will be a collection of Capcom's two Dungeons & Dragons themed brawlers: Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara.

The game is being developed by Iron Galaxy Studios (Dark Void, Darkstalkers Resurrection) and published by Capcom. It will feature HD visuals, drop-in/drop-out online co-op, customizable house rules, and several other new features.

3D Altered Beast is Ready to Kick Some Shins on the Japanese 3DS eShop

    Posted Image

While, admittedly, Japanese gamers currently suffer from comparatively empty eShop platforms — particularly on Wii U — due to tough publishing rules, as always there are some extras in the region that make us jealous. Notably, there's been a SEGA range of 3D Classics, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Space Harrier. Now there's another on the way — 3D Altered Beast.

With the Mega Drive / Genesis title being a SEGA arcade conversion, it's a demonstration of what the 16-bit machine could do, even if the attacks start off as a little wimpy. If a typical gamer fought zombies, we wonder whether it'd be more of the shin kicking shown in this game than the gruesome cricket bat wielding of ZombiU; it's a game where it's ultimately all about transforming into snarling beasts, of course.

This title hits the Japanese eShop on 29th May, will support the two-player option and cost 600 Yen.

Wii U-Focused Nintendo Direct Airing on First Day of E3 2013

    Posted Image

A Wii U focused Nintendo Direct presentation will be taking place on June 11th at 7 a.m PDT (10 a.m. EDT, 3 p.m UK time). This Nintendo Direct has currently been announced for North America and Europe with each region airing the event from their own Nintendo Direct website. It’s currently unknown if the information will be different on the region specific streams.

The Wii U focused Nintendo Direct takes place only five hours before the E3 show floor opens to attendees, and only three-and-a-half hours before Nintendo’s pre-E3 Wii U Software Showcase admits select members of the press into the Nintendo booth to get hands on time before the big crowds are let in.

This presentation is most likely what Nintendo will be using to showcase their big E3 games and announcements instead of their usual press conference. The format of a Nintendo Direct followed by a media-attended "Software Showcase"is not unprecedented: Nintendo executed a similar chain of events focused on the 3DS on April 17 of this year.

Dying Light Set To Skip Wii U

    Posted Image

Warner Bros. Interactive announced a new first-person survival horror game on May 23 in the form of Dying Light.

It's being developed by Polish developer Techland - the studio behind Dead Island - and was announced for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, as well as current-gen systems like the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

No mention was given to Wii U at the time but Warner Bros. has since confirmed with GameSpot that the game will sadly be skipping Nintendo's system.

Dying Light incorporates a full day-night cycle where the player explores urban environments by day and then fights off the infected by night.

It's a shame this one won't be available on Wii U as with it being developed by the same studio behind Dead Island there's plenty of anticipation for it.

It looks like Wii U owners will have to make do with ZombiU and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct for now.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Comes With Free Mario Lost Levels at Best Buy

    Posted Image

Nintendo of America has confirmed a promotion being run by Best Buy (in the U.S. only), where a purchase of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D comes with a free download code for Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels on the 3DS eShop. The retro Mario platformer has a price tag of $4.99, so it's a decent incentive.

Tweeted By Nintendo Of America (@NintendoAmerica): Pick up #DKCR3D at @BestBuy and receive Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels for free! (US only, while supplies last) http://spr.ly/6014kMIk

Rather bizarrely, and despite the official advertisement, Best Buy's website is still listing the physical version of the game for pre-order — while the equivalent download code is the same price and without the free Virtual Console download. If you're planning to pick up this terrific Wii re-make and fancy some free retro goodness, I suggest popping down to your local store while the free code stock lasts.
