An interesting topic - an article detailing why Pokemon designs have, in fact, gotten better

Weeeell I don't think Jynx was originally meant to be a blackface simulated pokemon.
but still, eggsecute and Voltorb weren't all that great, but when it comes down to the nostalgia, back when we were kids, this is all we had, and we thought it was all genius! I mean sure they complained about a Pokemon looking too similar to a Poke-ball, but the poke-ball itself was still an original design compared to a pokemon that looks like a candle or an ice-cream cone. I guess if you really look at it for what it is, they are pretty great, but regardless of where people get their opinion, whether it's nostalgia or whatever, The 1st Gen. pokemon haven't really gone anywhere, you can still catch them, so people really shouldn't have anything to complain about.

"...it doesn't matter how the Pokémon are designed inasmuch as it matters is that these Pokémon are new. Not just new, but sometimes weird, sometimes strange, and unlike the original 151, actually imaginative."

YES. Goodness I've been saying this since the advent of Black and White! Bring on the creativity with ice cream cones and dividing cells! Forget the super-generic rat and worms! Nah, I mean, the "animal" Pokemon certainly have their place. I just don't think we should cry foul at the Pokemon that aren't based on generic animal types.

First gen, while it has some nice designs can in an admittedly very exaggerated way be classified as such: either the entire Pokemon design is -
1.) based on a simple sphere (or more stuck together) - not that simple is bad, but it's crazy how many of them are like this
    or
2.) based on and designed as a (generic) real-world animal - not that real-world animals aren't cool, but... Caterpie. Sewaddle is so much cooler.
    or both.

Loved the article, I've been agreeing with this stuff for a long time. Favorite quote -

And finally we get to generation V, which includes the most perfect design of any Pokemon ever, Snivy. Look at that smug, smug bastard. I can't even list all the great designs in this gen - there's a knight Pokemon , a brocolli Monkey, a sarcaphogus, a snowflake and so much more.
Seriously gen V is by far my favorite as far as designs go. So much awesome, so much creativity.

I agree with the majority of the points argued here, and up until Gen V I have never had a problem with the new Pokemon. Hell my favorite Pokemon is Gen IV.

But for some reason, when Gen V came out, I sort of understood some of the complains for the first time. That was the point were they passed some odd invisible line in the sand that really distinguished what a Pokemon looked like. It was almost like they went into some kind of Uncanny Valley for me, because I was looking at these new cannon Pokemon, and yet part of me didn't feel like they were even designed for the same series.

As time passed I became more comfortable with the newest generations, but there are still a few in there that just feel more like OC Pokemon you would see on DA.

I think Pokemon have always looked dumb. But a garbage-themed Pokemon? Really?

I haven't really indulged much with the new gen but from the looks of it most pokemon look...well...unattractive. I may just be a "I pick pokemon who look cool" kinda person, but watching the anime and playing spinoffs made me realize how off the majority was. Like-what up with the freakin Afro bull? I can't explain how dramatic my face was when I first saw it.
I prefer other seasons because I liked what pokemon forms represented. Now it's..."Trubbish. Ha ha, I get it. Kinda like trash and rubbish......what a tragically misunderstood mutant..." There are certain pokemon that I did tip my hat to, but for the most part I don't prefer this gen.

I agree with most everything about that article. I'm in no way a hater on any gen, and I've been playing since 6 years old with Red and Blue.
I understand what the article said about possibly the reason being that a lot of players are getting bored of the series. I understand that, but so far it hasn't applied to me. For me, it doesn't matter whether I'm starting out in Pallet or Littleroot or wherever. It's still an adventure :)

I'm not saying I love all Pokemon designs - I don't. But I believe, as stated in the article, there are bad and good in every gen.

    Cool article :)

Every season has their bad pokemon and good ones. This new season just seemed to have more than usual bad pokemon IMO. :<

I judge it by, how many of them do I like vs how many of them do I hate.

Don't get me wrong, some pretty cool pokemon this gen.
But good god there were so many lame ones. Its like they have so much more they CAN do with them now, and they don't know when to stop developing the character. So many of them seem like they were just 3 pixels away from a cool idea or something.

Idk, really its personal preference, like what you like lol
