I think you'd actually be surprised how complex Zelda soundtracks can be. Even the main Wind Waker theme is in 3/4 time. |

Actually! It's in 9/8 time. So that's even more impressive ;D I've been out of town/Internet access. Up next is Ganon's Tower? |

I'm not trying to sound like a douche here, but I'm 90% sure that the main theme is in 3/4. I drum to 3/4 all the time. I can actually drum to the main theme because 3/4 time isn't very difficult. Where do you get 9/8 from? Unless 9/8 time is a combination of 3 3/4 bars? Anyways Ganon's Tower is coming soon enough. I wrote it but I don't think I like the write-up so I'm probably going to write it again. |

Haha, you probably know more about time signature and counting structure that I do (I only ever learned music, and not so much theory), so you may be right. The sheet music book lists the main theme (as well as the credits theme - anywhere with this song) as being written in 9/8 time, which makes sense given that 9/8 is very prominent in Celtic jigs. The Ceremony in the Woods (with Makar and the Koroks), then, is written in 12/8 time, which apparently is similar in counting (by threes). Apparently, in counting 9/8 you still count as if it were 3 beats per measure (just subdivided into 3 parts - 3x3=9), so that's probably why you can drum to it in 3/4 with no problem. So honestly, I'm not an expert here - that's just what the sheet book and a Google search of time signature explanations said :p |

That's super-interesting. I would love to look at the sheet music for Zelda tunes. Maybe it is in 9/8 and I can't tell the difference. Who knows. But yeah I'm rewriting my Ganon's Tower write-up at the moment. It'll probably be up either tomorrow or the next day. |

Oops, I didn't see that you had responded to my previous comment! Yeah, WW, OoT, and MM all have sheet music books (though I haven't been able to find MM or OoTs D:). I think Spirit Tracks has one too, actually. But thanks for going through all the effort to write it! It was super fun to read, especially considering it was one of my favorite games ever. I really want to play WW now! I really, really love the ending of WW. Not only is it super-mind-blowingly epic like you said, but it's also super thematic. It sets up Ganondorf and King Daphnes as foils - opposites that illustrate the theme of the story. The King spent his whole life longing and pining for Hyrule, the lost kingdom, for the lost days of glory. But it was time wasted - the kingdom would never return; its days were long gone. Likewise, Ganondorf had spent his life (post-flood) brooding over the lost days, dreaming of Hyrule's return and of his lordship... In the end, the King realizes it was all for naught, that life should be lived looking toward the future, and not hindered by the past. In his speech, he even admits that, before, he was just like Ganondorf in his thinking. But he takes the Triforce, and drowns his kingdom forever. Ganondorf, still living for the past, still tethered to old days, cannot accept this. The past can never be reclaimed, and his only response is child-like wrath. He is ultimately destroyed, and the King implores Link and Zelda to live for the future, to make their own future... he didn't want these two free spirits to be tethered to the regrets and memories of the past kingdom and waste their days, as he himself and Ganondorf were. It's such a perfect conclusion :'D Also, it gives Ganondorf's motivations for his original OoT actions (as opposed to rawrrawrrawrI'm evil!! like can be inferred in OoT), but more than that is it just handles the literary theme so well (especially as you SEE the kingdom being drowned before your very eyes, fighting the product of a life who never let go of the past!). The theme is so clear right there, but it's also present at other points in the game. Link and Tetra themselves can be seen as foils, in a way (Link living comfortably with what's known and easy on Outset; Tetra, her mother dead, living independent and free as the wind in her sails - and Link's choice to abandon the comfort of the known at the end). Though, the Ganondorf-Daphnes foil is the one that was obviously intended by the developers ;p Anyhow, thanks again; I would totally read any other game-followage like this.
