I wouldn't say that's an overhaul—it's more tweaking. The main formula of the Pokemon series was largely the same; pick a starting Pokemon in a small town, battle gym leaders, catch more Pokemon, fight the Elite Four, etc. An overhaul to me would be like Banjo-Tooie to Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts—same premise (collect Jiggies in order to fight Grunty) but the mechanics are very different.

I think it's too much of a change to be considered tweaking - a genre switch like you mentioned isn't an overhaul, it's a switch, even if it has the same premise. You have the original Mario series, and then the 3D Mario series; the premise is the same - progress through the game stage by stage- use power ups - beat Bowser, save the princess, but the mechanics are different - largely because it's a genre switch utilizing new technology. (The same can be said for spin off titles in general, like Luigi's Mansion, Super Princess Peach, hell, Paper Mario - same premise, different mechanics.) Here, you have one system that's been updated and remade to fit not only the technology, but the changing formulas. Tweaking is adjusting a few pokemon's stats (which they definitely did), adjusting the volume of a route's music or something - an overhaul is adding new gameplay mechanics, writing an actual story, using literal cutscenes and orchestrated music, etc -which they did for Black and White. Appearance wise, game play wise, story wise - it's all been overhauled, especially when you compare it to it's predecessor. I think, if you're going from any previous title to Black or White, you'll notice a change - especially if you play it competitively, or you're a large fan of the mechanics.

Hear, hear! Ice speaks a good word. Particularly about the mechanics. Black and White have really taken the core metagame and run with it to crazy places. The depth and sheer potentiality was great before, and it has only gone much deeper. Seriously, the Pokemon metagame is insane.

Oh, but, now that B/W2 have confirmed new stories, there are so many questions that have become valid. Surely it will take place in Unova? I'm guessing we'll see some kind of northern/western addition to the map. But what about the story? I can't see any good way how, if the game takes place soon after the first, they will incorporate the gym-progression concept (though they could pull a Gold/Silver and have a new trainer rise). But at the same time, it's difficult to imagine a main series Pokemon game without a similar progression.

Actually! We're supposed to hear some substantial news on the 8th! Which could potentially turn out to be the 7th. So, come this weekend, hopefully they'll shed some light on the structure of this game.

OK so some news came out of CoroCoro yesterday (or today I dunno) that revealed a new starting city and that the games will still take place in Unova (only half of it is frozen over). Supposedly there are new gym leaders too, one that plays guitar and another water-type.

Anyways, just read the stuff here.

    Yeah, saw this stuff yesterday.

I think the new trainers look cool. And it's nice that the Region Pokedex is more that in B/W, that way those who complained about not have the older Pokemon can't complain this time around.

Haven't really paid much attention to pokemon, I was a big fan of them, but I haven't heard of their games since then. Glad that they're still alive.
