Metroid: Other M lowered the bar; ...for metroid

I've heard from other people as well as this board about her personality, which is the only reason I haven't spent the money on the game myself. Given I have no first-hand account of it, I can only point out that her character even exudes confidence in something as trivial as Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I mean, taunt with her; the taunts are:

    -Dryly, "Try me"
    -Sardonically, "Oh my"
    -Provocatively, "Is that all?"

I think Other M was good, but there's a certain Ridley related cinematic that I truly didn't like simply because it was contradicting.

But regardless, it was a pretty good game, imo.

I personally think a Mega Man game would be pretty cool with Other M's 2D/3D gameplay combo.

That would be awesome. Playing a MegaMan game in the style as Other M... Dude. They must do that. Too bad they canceled Legends 3. Dx
If they could combined it with like, Network Transmission, that would kill!

I got it when it came out, and never finished it. But I enjoyed it, and I thought it was pretty good. It wasnt a memorable experience, which saddens me. I thought it would be a unique clever way to enjoy metroid with the switching from 1st to 3rd person. I got all the way up to the fight with ripley, not sure if thats the end or not, and now that I think about it, the gameplay kinda felt repetitive. You jump out of your opponents way, shoot a few times, fire some missiles, then repeat.

It was a good idea on paper as a whole, but they took away what metroid is. Back tracking and exploring to find all the armor upgrades. That sense of exploration. It just wasn't there.

Metroid: Other M was, without a doubt, a massive dissapointment not only for Metroid fans, but for almost any casual fan who happened to have picked up a copy of it.

One of the major priorities that circles in the minds of developers when making games for well established seriess is that they want to keep the main details of the same in future projects while at the same time deriving it from status quo. I believe that Nintendo felt like it was time to end the MP saga and cut off Retro from the series. Looking back on this decision, it was a fatal mistake for the Metroid series, but hindsight is 20/20.

[sigh] if only they had continued with the Prime series.

Is that right, now! I coulda sworn I've seen a good amount of people who enjoyed the game. Oh, oh, maybe they just don't know any better, or are unenlightened as to the lofty knowledge of the true nature of an enjoyable game!

I'm pretty sure people would have complained about continuing the Prime series, as well. You know, what with not doing anything drastically new, which seems to be a popular elitist prerequisite for "success" these days. IIRC, Retro themselves grew weary of it by the end of Corruption, and set out to develop something entirely different (later coming to be DKCR, of course). Not sayin' Other M's new mechanics were necessarily perfect for it, but, I'm just sayin'

No doubt. It was time for a change, and as stated, I don't fault Nintendo or Retro Studios for that. However the change to a whole new series was a bit drastic, especially when it left the wings of an incredibly successful one, no? The developers could have changed the future games more than they had before while still sticking with the prime series.

And I have to disagree on your first point: Nintendo lost a lot of hardcore Metroid gamers' approval with the Other M expedition.

Except Retro has remained with Nintendo, fortunately.

@Taze - Yeah, I see what you're saying. I just didn't like the lofty implication that just about everyone hated Other M, because there actually are a fair amount of people who enjoyed it for what it was. I was in a bad mood, too ;p

I have to ask you: Are you a Tim Tebow fan?

I only ask because of the Philipians quote in your signature.

I hate to put Quantom's words in his mouth (actually, I don't mind :>), but that verse is a very prominent verse in Christian culture, what with its conciseness and applicability. I don't keep up with football, at all, but IIRC, I do remember hearing that he advertised it somehow during a game. I don't know Quantom's veiws on American football, but I do know that verse is very well known and widely used amongst Christians and Christian groups in general.

Stop me if I'm breaking forum rules here, talking about religion and what not, but yes, Philipians 4:13 is very famous.

I asked because I know a lot of people have come to know the verse (and more) because of him.

Tim Tebow advertised it by using white-out to create the verse, 4:13 in his eye black.

But maybe he had originally loved the verse, which would have been awesome too.

Nah, it's fine to talk about/mention relgion here, just as long as no one is dumb about it (you know, inflammatory or blatantly malicious about it, from either side). That said, getting off topic is another issue, but personally, I love derailing threads - yourself? It reflects the natural tendency of conversations to diverge here and there and everywhere, which I appreciate.

Ha, I've been well known to veer off topic while talking like a windbag.

Joking aside, I'll save that for another thread. I love Metroid and would love for people to give their .02 cents on it. It still is a mystery to me how little reception Metroid gets.

I've been giving a great deal of thought to grape flavored candy lately.
Anyone else here like grape flavored candy?
Also, David Bowie man. Fuck yes. "Turn and face the strain- CH CH CHANGES! Don't wanna be a richer man"

I never even played the Prime games though, so maybe I would like it more since I don't have as much to compare it to.
