Do you guys know any? I've worn out a lot of my music on my iPod, and I'd really like to learn about some new, odd bands.

Do you know Soul Coughing? They're kinda like jazz/spoken word/stuff. They're really unappreciated, and they're really good. Listen to albums like Irresistible Bliss and Ruby Vroom.

I can say with confidence that this will be the most obscure band posted in this thread.

KMFDM (if you want to call them obscure)
    Swashbuckle
Nightwish (not so much obscure but good enough)

They're not totally unknown but I don't think Foxy Shazam has the fame it deserves. Its almost like a modern day Queen or something like that.

All of Tool's albums are platinum, they're hardly obscure.

Well, in which way are we using the word "obscure"? In terms of their hooters style, I'd say Tool is obscure.

I assume indie bands or bands that are otherwise generally unknown. Having every album you put out sell over a million records just in the US is hardly unknown.

I'd say look at a few ska bands like Chase Long Beach or Streetlight Manifesto.

Well, it depends on the era the band is from (there are three). The most recent is called 3rd Wave (kind of hooters the two bands I mentioned and 3rd Wave) which is a good mix of punk rock, jazz, and reggae. Then there's 2 Tone, which is much more punky. And then the original stuff is a lot like 3rd Wave, but minus the punk rock.

In my opinion, some good 3rd Wave ska bands are Streetlight Manifesto, Chase Long Beach, Reel Big Fish, The Toasters, Mustard Plug, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sublime, and The Aquabats.

If you're in to acoustic hooters, try Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution and Dan Potthast.

If you are going to listen to ska you might want to check out some of Reel Big Fish's tongue in cheek ska covers of other non-ska songs.
