How to resize the AR games.

Would you like to make the AR games bigger? Well, it's possible.. and testing out my crazy idea proves it.

If you have a scanner/printer this is something you can do yourself. Otherwise, I will provide the image file if a mod doesn't have a problem with me putting it here.

Basically, you scan your ? card or any of the other AR cards, save it, then print it. The trick here is to print it out larger than the original card. Since the games are in proportion to the card itself...larger card means larger games. And those little dragons at the end of the games become huge beasts now taking up an entire counter top.

This shows the size compared to the 3DS manual.

This is the larger card that was printed from the original.

And there ya go. The 3DS reads it just fine and now you can let your AR games take up the entire counter or table top. I printed it out in a 4x6. If I feel like sacrificing the ink, then I may go do something crazy and print a full page sized card. XD

This also proves that the original cards can be backed up as digital copies, and can be replaced should the originals get damaged...or replace them all together so the originals can be kept somewhere safe.

Nice find, good to know that it will read printed versions just fine. Means they should be able to make ones you just download and print out.

So... Now I'm curious if the system would be able to read it off a monitor.

As long as you retain the original aspect, apparently, you can scale it to any size.

And Dr. Fred - Nintendo has the cards on their website in PDF format for download, just in case you misplace/fuck up your original cards:

    http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/3ds/en_na/ar_download.jsp

Also, as long as the card itself is in it's original size aspect ratio, the surface doesn't matter - if it's printed on a t-shirt, it'll work. You can also use it on your TV screen, your i-Pod, your PSP, etc.

Yes, you can do it off of your Monitor.

That video was pretty cool. So worth all that money they wasted on toner.

Wow, too bad that didn't show the battle with a dragon. I went a head and printed a full page card, and the dragon is too big to fit on the counter top, so I had to place the card on the floor.

And about how the 3DS reads it, I am only assuming that it's software is able to recognize the different cards and loads the games/characters accordingly. Which would mean that they could add more cards it could recognize through an update or through purchase from the store.

i ttried this out on a massive image on my computer screen , because you facing the card from the top of the card rather than diagonally , all of the games are seen over head , the dragon is clueless as to where you are .

I tried it on my laptop screen - and it definitely works. It's easier for things that can swivel in all directions, but yeah, because the cards are read as top down, unless you can get the screen angle right, it's practically useless.

Did you have any difficulty trying to shoot the front of the box while its over head ?
I did , every time i got the right angle to shoot it from the whole of the card would disapear from the the cameras veiw .
took about 5-10 minute to shoot the damn thing .

Yeah - but I was able to tilt my screen back enough so that I was able to hit the right side without much difficulty. However, the problem of recognition is still present. It does work, but the effect isn't really the same. Until Nintendo releases some games that use that specific position, it's not really worth toying around with.

I wonder if altering the perspective/angle in Gimp/Photoshop would help solve that problem.

    Excellent idea, 55k.

    It does indeed work:

However, not how you'd expect. I'm not sure what the key part is (I'm doing some tests now), but the aspect ratio has to be maintained (you'll have to shrink it after changing it's perspective), but it seems to work. Using that card, the icons on the screen (the 6 boxes) are MASSIVE, it was nearly impossible to actually aim the ball to shoot the Mii icon. (There's 3 size ratios you can change into, and that one is actually "tiny." Average is HUGE - bigger than the computer.) I'll do some toying around, and see what I can figure out.

Well, it's not the question mark, nor the actual box. It must be both of them, together - scaling one without the other results in the same thing - a huge interface - one that's practically impossible to use. Scaling them together without shrinking the black card itself renders the camera unable to read the result. I'll keep on toying around with it.
