Graphics (typically a 360 fanboys goto statement) only matter when it inhibits gameplay - same with audio, or any other aspect. If the game constantly stutters (a problem I've had with Borderlands), or if the visuals are so out of wack that they actually inhibit your ability to play (sudden pop ins/outs, constant frame rate drops, random glitches, collision issues, etc), then the visuals do matter. Apart from that, they really don't. Everything else is just texture and model work - I could care less about how a game looks - if blocky my little pony is a blast to play, then it's a blast to play. I think Minecraft works as an excellent example. God of War 3 might look realistic, but I'd much rather play Mega Man Battle Network (a GBA game) because it's simply more fun. (And far, FAR less violent.) Same with the audio - if the audio is out of wack or out of place (random loud rock music in a Silent Hill game, for example) then it'll inhibit your ability to play the game, which draws from the game itself. To a lesser extent, voice work, as well. I'm not one to bicker about voice actors, but there have been plenty of times that I simply couldn't here a character talking and no subtitles were given (or the titles were too small - I had that problem with Gears of War 2's campaign when I was playing on my SDTV.) I also had a similar problem when playing Disgaea 2 on my PS2 - it might be a pet peeve, but clashing speech really pisses me off - especially when there are no subtitles (or the subtitles only run for one character's speech) - it makes the conversation practically impossible to understand. Other than that, though, it falls along the same lines as graphics - if there's nothing inhibiting the gameplay, then there's nothing to complain about. Of course, this all depends on what type of gamer you are. If you are one that thinks the textures of a game are really THAT important, you're probably running a PC anyway. I'm definitely about how fun the game is - I recently tried Shin Megami Tensei: if... and that game fucking rocks. It looks like it was made on a 10 dollar budget, but there are few games that give me that kind of chill while remaining absolutely a blast to play. Edited by IceCatraz, Jan 26 2011, 12:15 PM.
