Well, I would have to say Pokemon made the largest impact. Mario has not made the amount of "revolutionary" games recently as Pokemon has.

I would not consider any of the Pokemon games since the originals to be revolutionary in any way. They are basically the same core game with a bit added and taken away with each passing generation. The core gameplay has not changed at all since Red and Green were released in Japan in 1996.

As for Sonic, I really don't see the appeal in him these days. Back when he first came out he was a fresh and new face with a new take on the platforming genre, but since then I don't think I can recall a single thing his franchise has brought to the table when it comes to gaming as a whole. The majority of his games these days are flops and the majority of his original fandom have long since left him upon realizing that he will never really be that "hip new character" he was back in the early 90s.

Don't get me wrong, Sonic 1 through 3 were amazing, but thats about all he has going for him at this point.
I agree with you. Pokemon has always been kinda a genre of its own. It didn't really inspire other games to be any different.

For the classics, Sonic brought much more to the platforming table. There's no doubt about that. Nowadays, he's twisting fans left and right (which is a bad thing, but somehow increases his popularity), experimenting on different gameplay (mini-games, racing, Kinect), and made games on all three platforms (and iPhone/iPad/and other stuff). However, he has not influenced any other game outside his series as far as I know. But it's not hard to see why a Sonic fan will consider him an icon in all of gaming.

If you want other icons, you'd have to look who or what influenced everybody else. Somebody started the zombie trend. Somebody started Internet gameplay. Somebody... Something.

    Gotta get off the computer.
I have started a forum and I am currently looking for a small community willing to discuss things in general to waste time.

This is why Black and White is something to look forward to.

Sorry bro, but you're wrong. Many RPGs were made before Pokemon, with some of the more famous ones including Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. As well, there were 3D games before Sonic 3D Blast, mainly for the PC.

Yeah totally. The earliest video game RPGs came out in the mid 1970's. The first 3d game came out in 1982.

Donkey Kong on the other hand was the first game that allowed the player to jump across gaps and obstacles on their way to a goal. In other words, the first platformer. It is both a popular/good game and a groundbreaking game rather than just a popular/good game like early pokemon or sonic.

If historical significance is what we're going by then Mario is a pretty clear winner here. If we're going by what we like best then I dunno who I'd pick. But it would probably be something obscure and I certainly wouldn't bother to try to back it up with things like reasons and logic.

As much as I love LoZ, Mario has to be on top here.
He's been the greatest icon in gaming over his last 25 years, being the most recognizable and friendly. He boasts an illustrious collection of games and has almost never let us down.

RPGs predate video games as a whole. Ever hear of this little known game called D&D?!
