Since gaming started there were always those iconic characters that will forever be remembered. The 80s of course had characters like Pacman (80), Frogger (81), Mario (81), Link (86), and so on and so on. The 90s had its fair share with characters like Sonic (91), Duke Nukem (91), Lara Croft (96), Kirby (92), and Gordon Freeman (98) making their way up to iconic status

Which characters introduced in the past 10 years do you think will live on in infamy?

    This is a great idea, MFreak. Actually, Game Informer did something like this too, except it was 30 gaming characters who defined a decade or something. Either way;

    - KOS-MOS (Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht)
--I'm not sure what it is about her, but her last game was in 2006, yet she's appeared in 3 other games (4 if you count likeness), the latest of which was released this year. (EXCEED.) I'm not sure if she belongs to Nintendo or Namco (as Monolith created her while they were Namco, but now they are owned by Nintendo, so I'm not sure if it's the same thing as the whole Conker/Banjo deal with RARE, Nintendo, and MSoft), but she's got an insanely large fanbase, and she keeps on appearing in titles.

    -Arthas (WCIII - WoW)
--Not a fan of WoW, but his role is undeniable.
    -Sack Boy (LBP)
    -Kratos (GoW)
    -That Fagget from Guitar Hero

I'll post more as I think of them.
    Edit

Here is the list that GI picked, if anyone was wondering. I'll post up the images when I find them.

I was agreeing with that list until I saw Loghain and Bonnie McFarlane. How did these characters beat out Dante from Devil May Cry on this list? I know he isn't the most innovative character, but he has a way more massive fan base than those two.

Well, Pikachu still remains in the ranks with Mario and Sonic as one of the most iconic characters of all time.

I was shocked to see that Dante wasn't on the list. I don't even like the guy, but he's clearly a big name character. Same thing with Ratchet and Jak, who are also absent.
At least it has Wander and Tim. I didn't expect Game Informer to throw them on there.

I don't it has to do with popularity - because I agree with you - there are many characters who aren't on that list, like Sly Cooper, that have WAY larger fanbases. I think it's more the game that the characters came from - which is why the double entries don't make much sense. I mean, I haven't played Red Dead, and I'm not denying how large it is, but to have one character rank in at number 2, and then one at 29; was number 29 so important to this decade of gaming that they're on the list with another character from the same game, but not closer in number?

Either way, I'd like to mention Travis Touchdown.

    My opinion:

    - Master Chief from Halo.
    - Commander Shepard from Mass Effect
    - Kratos from God of War
    - Marcus Phoenix from Gears of War
    - Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2
    - The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
    - Nathan Drake from Uncharted
    - GLaDOS from Portal

From that Game Informer list, I don't see how some of them made the list. Ethan Mars from Heavy Rain? I disagree with that completely, especially considering he's above fucking Commander Shepard from Mass Effect. WTF?

Although the game didn't have a huge following, Jack from Madworld beats Bonnie McFarlane in my opinion.
And even though RE2 came out in '98, Leon S. Kennedy deserves a mention for RE4.

Professor Layton is a definitely one of the more obvious icons from this decade. It's crazy how popular the guy is in Japan. He's also very popular in Europe (wonder why :o), and, for a puzzle-oriented, point-and-click game, surprisingly popular in the States.

Well seeing as I started the topic I might as well put together my list

Just a few in no order at all
    -GLaDOS (Portal)
    -Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
    -Sackboy (LBP)
-Alyx Vance (Half-Life2, my all time favorite female video game character)
-Andrew Ryan and Sophia Lamp (Bioshock 1 and 2)
-The Big Daddies and Little Sisters (Also Bioshock 1 and 2)
-The Colossus (Shadow of the Colossus)
    - Master Chief (Not really a Halo fan, but no doubt he left his mark on the world)
    -Commander Shepard (Mass Effect)
    -Phoenix Wright (Any objections?)
-CL4P-TP (better known as ClapTrap in Borderlands)
-All 9 Playable Characters in Team Fortress 2 (they were basically designed with the sole purpose of being iconic and easily distinguished from one another)
-Companion Cube (Just try telling any Portal fan that this box was only a prop, and not a full character of the game)

If I had icons to describe the 2000-10 decade, it'd be like this. If the icons don't fit in this decade, it's because I don't remember what decade they came from.

Wii - Representative of the casual gamer. And broken TVs. And the fact that my friend loves to quote the Asian commercial "Wii would like to play."

Sonic - Representative of the Sonic fan Base
The Were-hog - Representative of the Sonic Cycle

Call of Duty - Currently the most used object to describe generic first person shooter to hate on innovative titles. It used to be Halo.

Phoenix Wright - Representative and Spokesperson for being a lawyer and saying "Objection!"

God of War - Influenced my friends on bringing Greek history into conversations. But it mostly was about killing Zeus.

Final Fantasy XIV - Representative of Square's colossal failure.

PS3 - Representative of Sony's marketing. You can't hack it. Years later, yes we can. Slim models. Also noted for "It does everything."

This decade should also be noted about one thing. Freaking sequels that we'd never expect.

Marvel vs Capcom 3. Megaman Legends 3. Super Mario Galaxy 2. Portal 2. Starcraft 2. Little Big Planet 2. Wii. Kinect. ...Okay, maybe some of us expected it, but I didn't. Just to be a Sonic fan, Imma mention that nobody expected a black alien father, werewolves, and the oddest name ever, Sonic Colours?

Characters I think will live on to the second decade. Sonic.
I have started a forum and I am currently looking for a small community willing to discuss things in general to waste time.
