I've known this for quite sometime, and I still care as little as I did before, but I figured I'd post about it this time around.

So, as I'm sure many of you know, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is coming out very soon. (This upcoming Wednesday here in the states) As I was talking with my little brother, he brought this fact up, and then proceeded to say "yeah man, Sonic's FINALLY going back to his roots." This upset me - my brother is only 12 years old. He knows nothing of "Sonic the Hedgehog" or any of it's direct sequels; how dare he say something like "finally?" Then, it hit me.

See, I didn't care for original 3/4 Sonic games. Hell, I could go as far to say that I dislike them; I never found running around with the screen moving at 900 miles per hour to keep up with the blue fuck ball, only to lag at any random moment and cause me to fall into a spiked pit any fun. The music bothered me, and Sonic moved like he was wearing ice skates; I just didn't care for the series in general. Now, most people disagree with me - good for you, I don't really care. That's the great thing about being a gamer - you don't have to care, just don't play it. So I don't. It's not fun for me - it's just a pain in the ass.

In the recent years, SEGA's released a bevy of titles that have strayed from that awful , old 2D speed formula; this pleased me. I LOVED Sonic Shuffle, and I found great fun in Sonic Adventure/2/2 Battle. I had a lot of fun with Sonic and the Secret Rings, and Black Knight fixed the only problems I had with the original folklore game. Hell, I even enjoyed the Sonic Advance and Rush series - they took what was wrong with Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 and fixed most of it - no more screen lagging, no more stale animation falls and retarded level design. Sonic wasn't this fat ass rat any more - he was a lean, acrobatic machine - and the game could keep up with his movements. I liked this.

So what's the point in all of this? "Finally a good Sonic game." That line makes me cringe every time I see it. Finally? Sonic Advance/Sonic Rush improved on the original concept so much. Those were FANTASTIC Sonic games. I'd take Sonic Advance over EVERY Sonic the Hedgehog title any day.

I thought most fans actually liked the recent 2D games. Outside of Advance 2, all of them are quite good and were well received by critics.
All of the bullshit is coming from the fans who only play the major console titles and guys who think "going back to your roots" should be done to an even greater extreme than Megaman 9.

You're in the minority there, Ice. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is easily, and by far, the best Sonic game. None of the games have come even close. Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were good too, but too short. Oh, and I liked the DS Sonic games as well. Supposedly Sonic CD and the Gameboy Advance games were pretty good, too.

I actually watched my brother play the PSN version of Sonic Adventure a couple of days ago and by god that game looks awful. Terrible animations, dreadful music, abysmal voice acting, lame level designs. I could go on and on. I remember playing that game at my buddies house when I was younger and loving it. But now? Ugh, it looks terrible. Absolutely terrible.

I personally can't wait for Sonic 4, but the length and price have me worried a bit.

Then I fall under that minority as well. I can't stand the original games, but Sonic Adventure battle 2 was by far my favorite Gamecube game.

I didn't like any of the first 4 (counting Sonic and Knuckles) Sonic games - they just didn't appeal to me. Advance 1/2/3, N (which is really just advance), and the Rush series are far more fun then any of the original 4, partly due to the technology. And those are all 2D side scrollers.

Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure 2/Battle are still on my top favorite games list for one reason - they're fun as hell. They aren't the prettiest titles, but they sure are a hell of a lot more fun than the original ones.

But that's not the point of this topic - the point is to point out the simple ignorance of 80 percent of these "2D Sonic is best everything else is gay" douchebags. The last 2D Sonic game came out what, 3 years ago? How the hell is that "FINALLY AFTER AGES OF BAD GAMES"? That shit is just annoying and ignorant. I remember watching a review (I think it was IGN's, but I can't recall) where the reviewer goes "SONIC IS BACK BABY" - where the fuck did he go? 3 years between 2D titles really isn't a long time. I get it - a lot of people didn't dig the 3D titles, big whoop. But ignoring the other 2D titles? Fffffsh, do a bit of research.
(Obviously not aimed at anyone here, unless you fit into the above category.)

I'll try out Sonic 4. I'm sure the same problems of the original 3/4 won't be there. I'll just have to get someone to buy it for me, because there ain't no way in hell I'm shelling out 15 dollars for so little game.

I don't get why you guys like Sonic Adventure 2.
Even if you liked the speed stages, the treasure hunting and clunky shooter levels were pretty awful.

I loved them. I can still remember - my brother and I worked on an animal chart for the chao garden and we put it up on our wall. I think we maxed out like....at least 30 different chao, including the different chaos chao. So much fun.

And of course, I loved the Shadow/Sonic stages. And the multiplayer! Kicking Knuckle's ass with Tikal or Chaos just felt amazing.

Eh, I liked Adventure 2. And I don't like anything.

The thing about Sonic games is it's only cool to like old ones. I remember when Adventure 2 came out. It was cool to hate on the treasure hunting and the clunky shooting. Now it's ok to like it again. When Sonic heroes came out, it was cool to hate on the camera and the 3 character switching. Now it's ok to like it again.

Is it ok to like Shadow the Hedgehog yet? I'm not really up on my popular groupthink.

I've always liked Sonic, even the first one because of the music.
2 was the best and 3 and Knuckles were fun too.
Sonic Adventure battle II on gamecube was awesome too.
I'll welcome Sonic 4, probably a good one.

One reason why I don't like the newer Sonic games as much as the Genesis ones is:

It's just not the same Sonic, Sonic himself and everything else. It's just not Sonic to me. I know that sounds weird, but I don't know how to explain it. All those new characters etc. were made up for a totally different audience or generation? as well. The whole atmosphere of the series is different.

Also the old games have better gameplay. Or perhaps it's the 2d games have better gameplay. I don't know.

It also could be the fact that I grew up with the old ones and nothing will ever compare now.

However I enjoyed Sonic Unleashed. But nobody else did.

I don't know why a 12 year old could say what he did. He didn't grow up with the old games. I don't know.

Sonic 2 will always be the best one.

When I was a kid, one of my best friends had this game. He had very few games and I spent a lot of time at his house. So I played it a lot, and I wound up actually liking it.
