I've been thinking about this for a long time after playing the SMG games. Ice had my idea though - Mini Mario. Well, his was using the toy things, mine was just Mario shrinking, but still. It's hard to imagine where he'll go next for a 3D platformer. Which is why I would think a micro type game could satisfy Mario's creative needs in a fresh way. Start to look at everything you see, but imagine them as platforming challenges for a small Mario. Like, look at the random objects strewn around your room, or on your desk. Now imagine them arranged in believable-yet-creatively-abstract ways to create a Mario level! The more I look at things around me - all kinds of plants, every day tools, food, architectural design, mechanical objects - and imagine them as platforming obstacles, the more I think the idea could work very well. Then if you wanna go really small, you could have something like atoms, molecules, cells, insides of living things (inside of plants would be really interesting) - all as platforming objects. Maybe this could be the theme for one or two areas. As for the name, Super Mario Micro comes to mind first. As for the time traveling someone mentioned earlier, that's a great idea for the overall concept, but it in itself doesn't provide anything to the level design and gameplay (assuming time travel is only a story thing and not something you manipulate as a gameplay mechanic). So it'd need to be paired with a different concept for level design. |
