I know it sounds stupid (probably because it is), but if Nintendo ever made Mario a casual game, that's what I could see happening. It would be different than power-ups, as they way you'd look would be more to an extreme. Also, maybe you could customize Mario, making him stronger in some criteria but more vulnerable in others. Mario is the family-friendly plumber that will make anyone feel welcome. A new look to Mario would have to be something that makes him feel even more welcoming; if not, then it's not the Mario we know and love.
