Don't act like you don't know. We've all heard of it; Competitive Gaming on Nintendo Systems. There has been people entering competitions for Super Smash Bros, and even Pokemon. So, my question is, is Competitive Gaming fine with you? |

Yup, there's a fairly huge online community for Pokemon. People say Nintendo doesn't do anything competitively, but when you get down to it, the main series Pokemon games are really and truly almost completely tailored for competitve play. 'Course, Nintendo doesn't directly make Pokemon, but still, they publish it. As for the poll, I can't decide whether I want to choose the 'It's lowering respect for games' option, or the 'I don't care' option. I see video games as, well, first and foremost for entertainment, but also as unique literary mediums, right up there with books and film. And if all gaming is coming to be these days is online competitvely play, people (meaning the general public) will never see video games for their true literary potential, and video games will continue to be looked down upon. But as for the games that are already online play oriented, I don't really care, and I don't complain. I have no problems with them. I just think that Nintendo does a great job at making a game, essentialy, a game. Not a book or a movie, but pure game. And for some franchises like Zelda, Mother, even Mario in some cases, and some others, they do a great job at acheiving the unique literary potential of video games (example - Majora's Mask and Wind Waker). So I don't want Nintendo to become consumed in online play too much. Though if maybe just some franchises and games (Mario Kart, Smash Bros, etc.) had improved online play, I'd be all for that. As fun and great as Mario Kart and Smash Bros and such are, I don't really think Nintendo would would need much else to get them by, (except the improved online service). In fact I'd love it if Mario Kart and Smash Bros and such had improved online. I just don't want Nintendo to start directing their focus to online play, like I explained above. I wholeheartedly agree. I'm into just playing online or maybe having a competition with my friends, but its all for fun. When we get into "Competitive play", we have people who have spent months of their lives training and practicing to win. This is where I got the Lowering Respect for Video Games part from; people are taking it WAY too seriously. Although if you're good and you just want to show it, then Competitive Play is fine with me. So i'm a split 50-50 |

I dislike online play. It distaracts from the real experience of a game, since I'm more of a solo player. Now if the game is solely made for multiplayer (IE Smash Bros, Mario Kart) then there should definitely be online. However, if it's a game that a sinbgle player can enjoy (Pokemon) then they should focus on the single player aspect moreso than online, although online is a very nice addition to Pokemon. Also: Fix the Wii's online. The games that seem to have been tailor made for online lag ass. |

I enjoy competitive play in SOME aspects. I'm more of an allies than enemies guy when it comes to playing with friends, though. I still think competitive play can be a good thing, though, as long as no one's a big jerk about losing/winning. |

Let them do it. I don't see the big deal about it. I was in a 2 vs 2 SSBB tourney (amateur one, mind you) about a year ago with my friend, and we did alright. There were kids that just stayed in that room playing SSBB and Guitar Hero though, and this was at a youth retreat. It's the lifestyle of some of these "competitive gamers" that worries me, not the actual competitions. |

Well said. That's exactly what I was thinking, people who stay in their room, with hours upon hours, deprived of sleep, hopelessly playing a game till it's left bare. I wouldn't be surprised if they had begun to hate the light ... |

Well that's past the borderlands of obsession. I'm just talking about some friendly competition. Like Brawl =] ... well ... even Brawl can be corrupted. But still. |

Casual Bowser... oh, the horror!

I think of competitve gaming as an extra in a game, except in a few games (Super Smash Bros. series). Multiplayer can really be fun with friends, and if not, you don't even have to play it. Now, public video game competitions I have never been to, but it sounds cool. It's fine if you really want to win the game, but if the only reason you play is to win, then it becomes a problem. The player will probably not have a enjoyable time with the game, as all he or she will care about is doing well. I put my vote as "I don't care", as I am undecided in some criteria. |

Pokemon is pretty twisting if you get into serious meta game play, especially when applying forced tiers. I'm a fan of that kind of competitive play. Call of Duty? Halo? Not so much. |

Pokemon screws with your brain once you start to get into seriously competitive play. I remember when I first tried it. I brought in my little team consisting of mildly to OK Pokemon, and I was completely overrun. It was a slaughter, honestly. I remember only taking out two or three of theirs. |

I agree with the Pokemon thing. I admit I was one of those basement dwellers who was training my pokemon for hours upon hours and made an excellent team. Once I was done, I realized what I had been doing. I never used my team in online play

There's still time. Pokemon competitive play will be going on for the next twenty or so years. Heck, maybe more ... |
