This is probably totally out there but I would have to say that every Mother/Earthbound that has come out to date has had an amazing soundtrack. Like the Eight Melodies was arranged into this beautiful chorale piece on the original soundtrack and it's so amazing.

Like Zelda in a way, Mother/Earthbound always makes music and sound a big part of the game. Even Mother/Earthbound 0 had an amazing soundtrack and it was released on the NES.

DKC indeed has amazing music ;D

But I'm going to have to say Zelda, NOT just because I'm a fanboy.  You see, music is more important to the Zelda series than other games.  It has significance to it and thus is used in various ways to express that significance.  Like when you hear a remix in a Zelda game, it's usually not just a remix for the sake of remixing - it usually points something out, like it connects places from different games (whether physically or metaphorically) or something.

A great example is this.  WIND WAKER SPOILERS AHEAD, don't read this post if you haven't played it ;o At the end of Wind Waker, when the king makes his wish for Hyrule to be destroyed, a song plays.  The Serenade of Water.  Now why would the Serenade of Water play then?  Well, if we go back and look at what Shiek says when she teaches it to you on OoT, we understand -

Time passes, people move. Like a river's flow, it never ends. A childish mind will turn to noble ambition. Young love will become deep affection. The clear water's surface reflects growth. Now listen to the Serenade of water to reflect upon yourself."

The whole message of Wind Waker was to let go of the past, what is comfortable and known, to grow into an adult mind and truly live life.  The sunken kingdom and the ocean above in Wind Waker reflects this.  Ganondorf strived for the past (Hyrule), he longed for what he knew, and this turned into his wrath when he realized at the end that he could not have it.  In this way, he had the immature mindset of the wrathful child.  The king, however, had learned and grown.  He lived life in the same way as Ganondorf, longing for the kingdom that was no more.  But he realized later that in order to truly grow, to truly live, one had to let go of what was known and comfortable that was gone.  He learned too late, however, and had nothing but regret for living in such a way.  He knew it was over for him, but he didn't want Link and Tetra to fall into the same life.  Thus, he wishes to drown Hyrule forever, setting Link and Tetra free from a life bound to a long-forgotten kingdom.

The awesome thing is that the Serenade of Water reflects all this, and it plays when the king makes his wish...

That's what I mean.  The music in Zelda is used in amazing ways that give it such significance, which is why I think Zelda has the best soundtrack.

Another fun example is Saria's Song and the Song of Healing.  In case you didn't know, the Song of Healing is Saria's Song played backwards.  What significance does this have?  In a nut shell, Termina is a parallel, alternate world to Hyrule, as we know.  The connections to Hyrule and Termina are the Lost Woods and the Clock Tower.  Saria's Song plays in Lost Woods, Song of Healing plays in the Clock Tower.  The flipped songs that play at each world's connection to the other signifies their existence as parallel worlds.

    Isn't Zelda music wonderful? 8D
You are indeed a Legend of Zeldarian. However, although yes, Zelda has some of the best soundtracks in the history of video games, I still think there are some games that surpass it. I know this is the Nintendo forums, but personally, I think the game Shadow of the Colosuss had way more adventerous and epic music than any LOZ game.

I have to say, the music when fighting the Colossi in that game, it just blows LOZ's boss music right out of the water. You can't compare something like this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHbcyPQ4Z3c <---------------------------(It's awesome!)

    to something like:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUuo_PfcxN4 <---------------------------------(Sheer epicness)

Sorry, but for Skyward Sword, Shigeru and the other Nintendo game producers should consider Kō Ōtani rather than Koji Kondo, just this one time.

(Temporarily closed. ...Gwaargh!) *doo wee doo wee doo*

Well of course you can't compare something on N64 to Shadow of Colossus :<

But I do agree that that SoC song blows that OoT song out of the water (however, OoT's final boss music I think blows both out of the water, 'course that's just me saying ;D).

Also, Koji doesn't compose too much for the Zelda series himself anymore, it's mostly his underlings that do. For instance, he only composed one (maybe two) songs for Spirit Tracks. He just approves/disapproves the music and oversees it and all. I kinda wish he would do more composing himself, but oh well. He knows exactly what music is needed for different games and situations and all, which is good. Like Miyamoto, he has a very good understanding of the world of a video game and how music should adapt to it.

But Koji probably won't be composing much of Skyward Sword's music anyway :< Still, they're using an orchestra, so I'm sure he'll be directing, like he did with Super Mario Galaxy. And he does a great job of that - he knows that with Mario and Zelda music, it can't just be static. It has to adapt to what's happening on screen, and when directing SMG's orchestra, he would have them do crazy things like go at weird tempos and all so they could match it with what happens on the game. And for Zelda, this is about 10 times more important than in Mario, so I know he'll handle it well ;D

Anyhow, the main reason I said LoZ has the best music is exactly because of the things I explained - the amazing ways in which it's used significantly. In terms of actual music though, Professor Layton and Mother have some astounding compositions.

As much as I like the game, I didn't like Earthbounds music at all. A lot of the songs were rather boring, and aside from Eight Melodies and Porky Means business, none the songs were very memorable.

Mother 3 improved drastically on this, though. Specifically any of the songs related to the Pig Mask Army or Porky.

I can see where you're coming from, but I'm not sure if you are talking about the Earthbound/Mother series as a whole or just one game. Are you talking about Earthbound 0 by chance, the game that wasn't released in the U.S. but was years later as a rom? It was released on the NES, but only in Japan. That's the soundtrack I was talking about.

But, Earthbound, the one that was released in the U.S. on the SNES, the music didn't do much for me, honestly.

Mother 3 has got to be my favorite soundtrack. Porky's Theme is my favorite and so is the Love Theme and certain battle themes featured throughout the game.

I was specifically referring to Earthbound for the SNES.
I haven't played Mother 1, nor have I bothered to look up anything about it online, so I have no idea if the music in that game is decent or not.

Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy. Why? Because they are fully orchestrated, they sound great, and they fit the mood of the situation you are in.
