Which Nintendo series often has the best soundtracks

A sentence for you to read underneath my avatar.
For me, I think one of the greatest soundtracks ever composed for Nintendo has got to be David Wise's compositions for Donkey Kong Country. I honestly think that not only is that game's soundtrack one of the best for the SNES, but one of the best soundtracks in video gaming history.

I'd also like to mention Killer Instinct and Starfox on this list. Mario, obviously. Koji Kondo some of the most memorable music for all time with those soundtracks.

Kirby soundtracks too. But, to me, Kirby's best soundtracks were most likely in his SNES days. Kirby Super Star had his best music, both for nostalgia reasons, and the fact that they're catchy.

    Well, state your opinions.

The Legend of Zelda series and Metriod Prime series have had some great soundtracks. I will agree with you about Donkey Kong Country, that was a great soundtrack as well.

(Temporarily closed. ...Gwaargh!) *doo wee doo wee doo*

DKC indeed has amazing music ;D

But I'm going to have to say Zelda, NOT just because I'm a fanboy.  You see, music is more important to the Zelda series than other games.  It has significance to it and thus is used in various ways to express that significance.  Like when you hear a remix in a Zelda game, it's usually not just a remix for the sake of remixing - it usually points something out, like it connects places from different games (whether physically or metaphorically) or something.

A great example is this.  WIND WAKER SPOILERS AHEAD, don't read this post if you haven't played it ;o At the end of Wind Waker, when the king makes his wish for Hyrule to be destroyed, a song plays.  The Serenade of Water.  Now why would the Serenade of Water play then?  Well, if we go back and look at what Shiek says when she teaches it to you on OoT, we understand -

Time passes, people move. Like a river's flow, it never ends. A childish mind will turn to noble ambition. Young love will become deep affection. The clear water's surface reflects growth. Now listen to the Serenade of water to reflect upon yourself."

The whole message of Wind Waker was to let go of the past, what is comfortable and known, to grow into an adult mind and truly live life.  The sunken kingdom and the ocean above in Wind Waker reflects this.  Ganondorf strived for the past (Hyrule), he longed for what he knew, and this turned into his wrath when he realized at the end that he could not have it.  In this way, he had the immature mindset of the wrathful child.  The king, however, had learned and grown.  He lived life in the same way as Ganondorf, longing for the kingdom that was no more.  But he realized later that in order to truly grow, to truly live, one had to let go of what was known and comfortable that was gone.  He learned too late, however, and had nothing but regret for living in such a way.  He knew it was over for him, but he didn't want Link and Tetra to fall into the same life.  Thus, he wishes to drown Hyrule forever, setting Link and Tetra free from a life bound to a long-forgotten kingdom.

The awesome thing is that the Serenade of Water reflects all this, and it plays when the king makes his wish...

That's what I mean.  The music in Zelda is used in amazing ways that give it such significance, which is why I think Zelda has the best soundtrack.

Another fun example is Saria's Song and the Song of Healing.  In case you didn't know, the Song of Healing is Saria's Song played backwards.  What significance does this have?  In a nut shell, Termina is a parallel, alternate world to Hyrule, as we know.  The connections to Hyrule and Termina are the Lost Woods and the Clock Tower.  Saria's Song plays in Lost Woods, Song of Healing plays in the Clock Tower.  The flipped songs that play at each world's connection to the other signifies their existence as parallel worlds.

    Isn't Zelda music wonderful? 8D

I assume this is strictly regarding first and second party titles?
Donkey Kong Country and Metroid. Pretty much any piece composed David Wise and Kenji Yamamoto is astounding.
Honorable mentions to Professor Layton, Mother, the Mario galaxy Orchestra, Meteos and any of Yoko Shimomura's works.

    Don't you agree, Zach?

Zelda. I'm pretty sure our resident Zelda fanboy explained it all. I honestly don't know what to add.

Foremost is the chromatic substance accomplishment to Picklegod! Pickle contributes to all parts of the forum, stays astir, and mostly is awful to everyone he meets. A wonderful, intelligent somebody, Pickle testament now better us with every day NF decisions. Approval Picklgod!

I went to this website called Zelda Power (zeldapower.com) and they have the entire collection of super smash bros. brawl songs on their site. But for some reason, when I transferred the songs off of the cd i put them on and into itunes, for some reason they wouldn't download onto my ipod. Although I can still listen to them on the computer, they arent with me wherever i go.

But yeah I definitely love LoZ Ocarina of Time songs.

I must say i do enjoy the works of Grant Kirkhope (Donkey Kong 64 and the Banjo-Kazooie series). They are whimsical and catchy. I also love the fact that he arranges the overworld theme to match the style of the level one is about to enter (ex. The Banjo-Kazooie overworld theme takes a desert theme when the character gets closer to the desert level).

However, after reading Togeshroob's post, I agree whole-heartedly with that. When the doors opened to the Temple of Time in TP, the music i heard growing up playing OoT blew me away.
