Also, although half the population who know it don't know it's a video game character, Pikachu. Pokemon itself is just as memorable as Mario. If not Pikachu, then (as much as I hate to say it), Charizard.

Along with Cloud Strife, the posterboy for modern RPGs. To the general public, Mario, Pikachu, and maybe Sonic. And I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Link. He's more of a Mario type to older gamers. I forgot about Pacman, but i'd have to agree, adults know him, kids know him. Actually, every adult that I've talked to about video game always mentions Space Invaders pr Missile Command. So, maybe Playable Tank is just as iconic as Mario?
